To energize the underground lines
Por energizar la línea subterránea[+] Ver mas
They expect to be testing the underground electrical lines in June, before putting them into operation. This project was initiated in 2010, with the intention of removing all the overhead posts along the main street of Rueda Medina. Local CFE manager, Orlando Roque Flores, said they plan to energize one kilometer of underground lines from the monument to the fishermen (at the northern end of Rueda Medina) to the northern tip of the airstrip, and they will be working on this over the next month. (See yesterday's news translations for more details also contained in this article.)
Guaranteed supply
Local legislator Juan Carrillo Soberanis met with the superintendent of the CFE of the Northern Zone on Wednesday and was told that the supply of electricity to the ~15,000 users in Isla Mujeres is guaranteed, noting that the suspension of service for nearly an hour in April was an isolated case. You may recall that the Legislature, on April 29th, asked the CFE to explain the situation and to inspect the underwater cables that feed the island to ensure a constant supply. The CFE responded, "The infrastructure that provides electricity to Isla Mujeres is within its useful life, therefore the supply of this service will be assured," said Carrillo Soberanis. Within ten years these cables must be renewed, and the previous event was an isolated incident.

Isla Contoy licensees combat red mites
Permisionarios de Contoy combatirán el ácaro rojo [+] Ver mas
The permittees and boat crews who take tourists to Isla Contoy National park will receive training in combating red mites, to join the fight against this pest at the reserve. The Park Director notified the licensees and their staff via email to participate on Friday from 8a to 2p at the Museum on the isle, to learn the techniques, which will be used in the future. The procedures against the invasive insect are led by engineer Trinidad Sanchez and personnel of Amigos de Sian Ka'an, as well as hired laborers doing field work of applying chemicals to each plant.
They have also announced that there is another special circumstance on Isla Contoy, with the invasion of a flock of hundreds of grackles, and an effort to contain them is being prepared, before they affect the habitat of the area, and a request was made for the support of the licensees.

This celebration dates back to colonial times. Construction workers decorate crosses with flowers and mount them on buildings under construction, and have picnics at the site.
May 5. Tuesday: Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). No school. This date is commemorated more enthusiastically in the US, as general celebration of Mexican culture (and opportunity for abundant consumption of salsa, chips, and Mexican beer.).
Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65. {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
