Use caution around park bushes at Town Square

Some housewives are saying the worms on the bushes at the park downtown look similar to those known as "chamaquin", whose stings can cause fevers and affect blood pressure. Therefore, they want immediate intervention by City employees to eradicate them. This has not been confirmed and other people say these worms are harmless, and that the type which pose a danger are of the color black and are thicker.

Panoramic tower to be totally dismantled in the upcoming days

 The Garrafon park panoramic tower, which has been inoperative for several years, is expected to be dismantled entirely this week or, at the latest, the following week. During the short time it remained in operation, it offered a special view of the Bay of Isla Mujeres, as well as the entire island and its surroundings.
  Those who disliked it say it was not in keeping with the landscape of a Caribbean destination, but rather seemed like something found in a park like Disneyland. Also, while it was inoperative, there were comments that it could be dangerous if it was damaged in a hurricane.
      The fact of the matter is that the tower is being demolished and removed and will disappear in the upcoming days.

Commemorating the anniversary of the death of Luis Donaldo Colosio

In colonia Amplification la Gloria, at the Las Hormiguitas park (the worker ants), a bust of Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta was unveiled in a ceremony commemorating the 21st anniversary of his death.
       Fidel Villanueva Madrid, (municipal trustee and town historian) spoke as a representative of the City, saying, "In Isla Mujeres we have reason to remember Luis Donaldo Colosio, regardless of his importance at the national level. Here he left his mark in the form of  innovative and transformative public works and services that until today have been enjoyed by all, while most did not know that it was he who made the political efforts to solve the old demands of the islanders. "  
     In the island municipality, his material legacy is transcendent and important. It was he who gave the infrastructure and equipment for trash collection and for its transfer to the mainland landfill. In this manner, the island was able to eliminate its open landfill. 
   Another major public work he left behind for the future generations of the islnd was the Program of Lagoon Sanitation, which ended the contamination of Salina Grande, as well as in this same vein, by dredging, land was gained from these bodies of water, which is currently benefiting the community in the form of sports fields, civic areas, green spaces, and parks. 
   Over time, with his intervention, resources were assigned for the project of the Cross in the Bay,  the urban image of the downtown Historic Center, and for the rescue of the ruins of the Mayas at Punta Sur/South Point, among other works. 
       In Isla Mujeres, Luis Donaldo Colosio will always be remembered, not a someone who produced rhetoric, but rather as someone whose results are tangible and obvious to everyone. Therefore, with this simple but meaningful event on Monday morning, the community and the municipal government left this sign of their gratitude to the ill-fated Sonoran politician who had long range vision.

     (He was a PRI presidential candidate, who was assassinated at a campaign rally in Tijuana four months before the 1994 election. Since a presidential candidate cannot hold office during the six months before the election, many politicians were ineligible to replace him. Ernesto Zedillo was elected president, becoming the last PRI president from the longest lasting one-party rule in modern times in Mexico.)
With the invaluable assistance of the staff of the State Ministry of Health, and volunteers, the formal opening ceremony was conducted for the National Campaign for Anti Rabies Vaccinations at Rancho Viejo on the mainland area of Isla Mujeres. The slogan is "Remember to vaccinate your dogs & cats. Protect your family". Notices were distributed to the population during the three days prior to the start of the vaccination campaign, which helped with its success.The event began punctually at the designated time and hundreds of people brought their cats and dogs to be vaccinated against the viral disease of rabies.

Seeking "Magic Town" designation

.Legislator Juan Carrillo Soberanis was on the island participating in the event commemorating the 21st anniversary of the death of Luis Donaldo Colosio. He said the Tourism Ministry officials left with a good impression, after they were on the island on March 19th and 20th  evaluating whether Isla Mujeres qualifies for designation as a Pueblo Magico.
     He said, "I know they were given a very good impression because Isla Mujeres has everything required to become a Pueblo Magico...history, music, culture, architecture, and everything in general that has to do with tourism." He said there are other destinations in Quintana Roo who are also seeking this distinction, and in this regard, he is sure that SECTUR with take them all into account, but still, he will push for Isla Mujeres to be selected and he will encourage members from other districts to support him in this regard.  
   He noted that in December he worked on an initiative to promote employment for the disabled, presenting a joint initiative with Susana Hurtado, which is of real benefit to disabled people. He said, "Statistics show that in Quintana Roo, three to four percent of the population has a disability. They are entitled to have a decent job." He explained that the initiative requires that large companies such as supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses who have more than 50 employees must include at least two person with disabilities in their workforce.

A young couple were enjoying their honeymoon with a visit to Isla Mujeres, when the bride lost her footing in the water and was rescued by lifeguard Luis Antonio González Martín. The newlyweds from Guadalajara, Jalisco, came for a day trip from Cancun, and settled into loungers on Playa Norte.
      Laura Vanessa Meléndez, 25, who cannot swim, decided to cool off in the waist-deep water. She continued to walk out until the water was chest deep, when she was thinking of returning to shore.. A small current caused her to lose her footing. She panicked and began struggling when she realized she was no longer standing on solid ground. She was sinking and surfacing, which caused her husband,  José Manuel Silva, 26, to alert the lifeguard in the area.
      The lifeguard did not hesitate and immediately ran into the water to rescue the young woman. He quickly arrived at the place where the tourist was struggling to stay afloat. He calmed her and reassured her that everything was going to be okay, and helped her back to shore, where her anguished husband was waiting.
    The lifeguard gave her first aid and she responded favorably. At that point she rejected his suggestion to call the Red Cross. She preferred to rest on her lounger, and asked for a glass of water, taking slow sips, recovering from the scare.
       She asked the lifeguards, who stayed with the couple, "Can I eat something, or will it make me sick?" She said she felt dizzy and confused, and her stomach was upset, which was presumably caused by the amount of salt water she swallowed, and fortunately had thrown up.
       Her new husband, who was recovering from the scare, commented that they will never forget their visit to Isla Mueres.

LBSN play Weds/Saturday from 10:30 till 12, Fridays and Saturdays we also play next door, at Adelitas, just salsa music, from 12:39 till 2:00  (I'm not sure if this is still current)
