Alberto Cervantes “Cañitas”, 18, plays in the third division of Mexican soccer, with the team Ejidatarios de Bonfil, representing Isla Mujeres. He hopes Isla Mujeres will soon have its own team in this division. He was born into a humble family, and gave a brief interview at their home in colonia Caridad del Cobre, where he was getting ready to cross over to Cancun to play in the classic game with the Pioneros de Cancun, held after hours at the stadium Cancun 86.
He said Isla Mujeres deserves to have its own team in the Third Division, and there are enough talented players on the island to create a team. He spoke about his start playing soccer off the island when he was 11 years old with the youth league "Guillermo Canedo" of Cancun, with professor Nabor Basulto. His performance on the field helped him gain the attention of coaches and their confidence.
He has the support of his parents and has paid a high price to devote time to soccer. He started high school, but only attended for the first semester because his schedule was complicated. He had to prepare at 1pm daily to cross on the ferry and participate in training with the Bonifil team. He has started taking classes in an open system, because he knows you have to be prepared in life, and soccer is a temporary practice. He listens to advice from his parents, coaches, and friends about how to correctly to develop himself.
The government pays for his ferry tickets to get to practice, but if the island had its own Third Division team, this would not be necessary. It would give opportunities for many children without them having to go thru the hardships and sacrifices that he has done.
His father works in the cooperative Patria y Progreso and his mother sells food at the primary school "Julio Sauri". Soon he will be helping with the moral and financial support he receives from his parents, sister, friends, and authorities.
Bonifil is in the middle of its tournament, with only 7 jornadas left. If they win nearly all of them they will qualify for the playoffs, and if that is not possible, they will look forward to next season's competition.
