Businesses concerned about erosion on North Beach
Preocupación de empresarios
Por erosión de playas en la zona Norte
Leer más...
Some entrepreneurs at North Beach are very concerned the tremendous erosion of sand from the beaches recently, fearing they could lose their buildings in the affected area. Dozens of meters of sand have been lost from the beach area known as "Caribean" or "Chichis", to the extent that a beach palapa is practically in the sea and is about to fall, as well as the umbrellas and lounge chairs in the vicinity..
Employers and workers in this area suggest that this phenomenon of erosion is occurring because the "whales" that were placed for the recovery of beaches for several years, are now broken and no longer provide the system that prevents sand and beaches from disappearing.
They said they suspect that these "whales" were vandalized and were broken on purpose with the intention of affecting entrepreneurs in this area, who had been befitting from many tourists visiting their area of beach in recent months due to the extension of sand there, which allowed the placement of chairs and umbrellas for the enjoyment of tourists.
However, they also explained that with the absence of this system for the recovery of sand and beach, strong winds from the north are a determining factor for the loss of sand, which was a problem previously, some years ago.
They mentioned that despite this adverse situation, they have faith that in the coming months, with the arrival of winds south-southeast, these sands return to their area and to other beach areas which lack sand, as occurred earlier in the season.
Finally, they said they are analyzing the applicability of new system, using the same method of "whales" for recovering the sand, but this would require substantial funding.

The Director of Fiscalizacion, Jeorge Mejia, said the problem is not new, and the peddlers are constantly "invited" to leave the beach area. On a walk by the Posada del Mar beach, about two or three mobile vendors were seen. It is recalled that the City administration decided to remove them from the beaches and relocate them elsewhere, to avoid problems and prevent them from bothering tourists. The Director explained that there are ways to obtain the permit required to legalize their vending, but many avoid this responsibility. But those with permits are not allowed to sell in the beach areas.

Inefficient trash management
Ineficiente manejo de la basura[+] Ver mas
A full container of trash was parked in the vehicle ferry parking lot all day Thursday with a strong odor, and some leakage, with health regulations preventing its going onto the ferry. The trash trucks must cross on the first cruise, in the early hours, when there aren't tourists. The personnel who are responsible for transferring the trash to the mainland landfill are aware of this requirement. The Trash Transfer station is currently full of trash, which is unofficially blamed on the City for not renewing the trash truck fleet. In the past in similar circumstances there has been assistance in transferring the trash from the government of Benito Juarez (Cancun's municipality) and the state government.

Members of the Navy, including the canine unit, were at the Maritime Terminal, at around 11am on Tuesday, to prevent drugs or weapons from passing through. Locals and tourists observed with curiosity, and the soldiers were accompanied by a German Shepard dog that is trained to detect drugs or weapons.
This is the first operation of this type since the new Naval Commander took command, which was el almirante Juan Guillermo Fierro Rocha replacing el almirante Juan Ramón Alcalá Pignol. They reviewed backpacks, packages, and cargo without detecting any weapons or drugs. Tourists and tourism service providers agreed that this type of action improves the image of the island and inspires confidence that we care and the Navy prevents drugs from entering.

Water leak lasted two days
Restauranteurs, merchants, and tourists were concerned about the wasted water from a leak on Hidalgo that lasted for two days, despite notification being given to Aguakan. The leak occurred a few steps from Matamoros and the tap water traveled about 100 meters to the storm drains by Abasolo.
The problem was first noted on Saturday night, and the repair was made before 8am on Monday morning. Aguakan manager Jose Pinzon said they offered to address the problem on Sunday evening, but there were many tourists in the area, and it was determined that it would be better to correct the problem when there were fewer tourism activities. There was water still remaining on Monday at 11am, and they were attending to it with other building materials, without placing the adocretos. The leak affected the sales of nearby merchants since people preferred to go where there was no water, and those who did enter stores, left behind their muddy footprints.
Hours later a team of workers were at the intersection of Hidalgo and Lopez Mateos, in anticipation of another leakage problem.

Maritime ambulance: Only "an adornment"
Although the island has had a sea ambulance for over a year, no staff have been trained to operate this 24 hour service. On social media, a Red Cross paramedic said that "It takes a crew of four who are trained and experienced in pre hospital medical care and transportation, as well as a captain. You do not want to risk it with a makeshift crew." Relatives have had to charter boats to take their sick family members from the island to Puerto Juarez. In the case of the young man who died Sunday, his body was transported over from the pier at Social Justicia cooperativa. A few months ago the sea ambulance was moved from the City concrete pier to a private marina.

The time change (an hour ahead) is scheduled to take place in a coupla weeks at 2am on Feb 1st. This is a 'permanent' change voted in by the Legislature last year, that has been discussed, and promoted by the tourism industry, for years. It will sync us up with a coupla dozen airports in the US & Canada, "add an hour of daylight" & supposedly save money on energy.
The internet indicates we will no longer participate in the changing back & forth with Daylight Savings Time. Currently we are in sync with Central time, and will continue to be when that zone is on DST, but the rest of the year, we will be in sync with Eastern Standard Time.
DST is March 8-Nov. 1 in the US, and April 5-Oct 25 in Mexico, when Isla will be in sync with CT. During the fall/winter Isla will be in sync with EST.
