IM begins month of March on the right foot
IM comienza el mes de marzo con buen pie .. [+] Ver mas
With overall hotel occupancy at 85 percent, Isla Mujeres began the month of March on the right foot, with a good demand for products and services, which is expected to increase to 100 percent in a couple of weeks. The IMH (Isla Mujeres Hotel) group reported occupancy of 74%, while the Pequeños Fascinantes Hoteles group reported 88 percent. In addition there are guests staying in "pirate" houses and apartments who are not paying the 3% lodging tax, which are usually marketed via the internet to tourists in the United States and Canada.
Hoteliers attribute the good occupancy to the promotional work that has been done in recent years, which has paid off, although they emphasized that the best promotion is word of mouth, which is why it is important to offer quality and satisfaction, to encourage visitors to return and to recommend this place. They expect Easter occupancy rates to reach 100 percent, and it is nearly impossible to find a room at that time, except for last minute cancellations of reservations.
Sunny skies and warm temperatures caused many people to visit the beach and go into the waters, while others sought shade under umbrellas or palms. Golf cart rental agencies reported that demand was at 80%, therefore tourists who wanted units at 1pm found them easily.
Increased cost of fish
Encarecerá el kilogramo de pescado.. [+] Ver mas
Due to the shortage of seafood, there has been an average increase of 10 pesos per kilogram of fish, and a supply is not guaranteed during Lent, therefore hotels and restaurants are stocking up.(This is the equivalent of ~25c usd/lb) In the storage areas of the fishing cooperatives, there are kilos of lobster which were caught before the ban began, and a little frozen grouper which was captured before the first of February, when the ban began on that species. Meanwhile, fresh fish is scarce.
At the end of the lobster season, the fishermen of Isla Mujeres saw a slight increase in production, while bringing their last traps. In contrast, the fishing has been slow and there are barely enough fish to be marketed to local residents, while many restaurants are forced to obtain supplies elsewhere.
On of the fishermen said, "Usually there is enough to sell to the community, including the restaurants and to market the rest to the buyers from Progreso, but currently there is a scarcity, and what is caught is sold to the first people who come to the cooperatives, who know to meet the boats early when they arrive, or otherwise they'll miss out." He said most of the cooperatives do not have enough fish in their storage areas and the fishermen don't know whether they will be able to meet the demand during Lent, due to unfavorable weather conditions and because there is not an abundant amount of fish in the sea.
He said, "There is not a lack, but there is a shortage, partially because we are in the midst of the closed season for grouper and abadejo, which are two species who are usually in high demand among consumers, but we must refrain from going out and harpooning them, although they are usually our strong sellers. He said there are a few fishermen who capture fish with hooks on lines or long lines and with nets, which are labor intensive with small results at the end of the day.
He said, "Due to the increased demand, the price of fish is rising at least 10 pesos per kilo, while the supply is affected by the bans and the catches are small."

Tortugranja needs attention
Tortugranja en total descuidoa .. [+] Ver mas
Some visitors say it is sad to see the turtles, lobsters, starfish, octopus, seahorses, and other animals in small tanks and aquariums, and they think the facility should be improved. There are areas of glass in need of cleaning and some algae is growing which needs attention and makes a bad impression on the tourists. There are also complaints about a lack of guides to explain the exhibits, and that some people are ignoring the signs and touching the animals.
The entry fee is 30 pesos or three dollars. It is unknown how many turtle hatchlings were released this year during the season of protection, when nearly all the releases were carried out in a private manner. Turtle food is sold in small bags to tourists at the entrance to the facility, who feed the animals, and it is not known if they are overfed. It is noted that the Director of the Tortugranja, Raciel Rivero Coba, is also involved with the Board of Directors of the Patria & Progreso fishing cooperative.
