The event "Isla Mujeres Summer Fest 2015" took place Saturday in an environment of healthy competition and youthful enthusiasm. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the purchase of wheelchairs adapted for athletic use. The DIF social service agency coordinated and promoted the event, and the President, Marthy Vergas Leon de Magana opened the event.
This sport of longboarding, a type of skateboarding, combines discipline, physical exercise, skill, concentration, and a high dose of adrenaline. There were two categories of skaters: 15 and under and 16 and over, who skated a Cross course with obstacles and they also skated el Slide Jam. (That was probably the racing part where two skaters at a time made the route of the course, up and down Paseo de los Peces).
Participants included local islanders, as well as skaters from Cozumel and Playa Carmen. There were some professionals attending who gave an exciting exhibition: Oscar Gutiérrez, of Guadalajara, Jalisco, and Fabián Gutiérrez, of the Distrito Federal (Mexico City). The event was attended by a good number of young people and families who enjoyed the event. Some of the participating skaters have won awards worldwide in longboarding.
The President of the DIF said, "One sport helping another sport is a demonstration that with solidarity we can achieve dreams. This is one of the many activities that will take place as we begin our efforts to find resources to buy wheelchairs adapted for sports use, and we have great faith in this."

Many nearby residents are looking forward to the completion of the work, because it has generated a large amount of dust over the past month.
Aguakan added 560 meters of sewer line, with 10 manholes and 30 hookups. The Director of Public Works, Miguel Caballero Garcia, said the paving work is expected to be completed in 30 days, maximum, and includes the application of hydraulic material to compact the foundation, upon which the pavement layer goes. A meeting will be held at the Isla Mujeres General Hospital on August 14, offering information about free, no-scalpel vasectomies available for men. This is a minimally invasive procedure which causes male infertility, without affecting sexual function, and is a definitive, safe, and effective method of birth control for men who are sure they no longer want children.
The free procedure lasts 20 minutes, and the patients come to the reproductive health area of the hospital between 8am and noon, bathed and with their genital area shaved, and accompanied by a family member. They can call 877 17 90 or 99 81 80 56 52 to make an appointment, said Leily Osorio Mares, who is in charge of the Reproductive Health unit of the Hospital.

With the large influx of visitors in this holiday season bringing an increased number of vehicles throughout the island, there is a shortage of parking spaces in the downtown area. This causes people to park on the sidewalks, which annoys visitors and local people, especially the merchants who say this blocks access to their stores.
The reporter took a tour of Guerrero and Juarez, near the Town Square, and found this problem existing there at several sections. These vehicles are not using the parking lot at Casa de Cultura. The drivers say they are just parking it for a few minutes, but often these few minutes become hours.
There is also annoyance about parking spaces that have been 'claimed' by businesses or individuals, and some even set up tables in them to sell a product or service to visitors. Children and women are having difficulty, and there is a risk of accidents. Therefore it is recommended that the Traffic Police give this a priority and take action to prevent potential accidents.

Seven Cubans in a balsero boat rescued by Navy
(That photo looks like the one with the previous article when 13 Cubans were rescued)
The Naval Search and Rescue Unit (ENSAR) of Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, in a boat Patrulla Interceptora, rescued five men and two women, of Cuban nationality aboard a balsero boat, near the beach "Las Cruces", two kilometers from the National Park of Isla Contoy. They were given food, water, and medical attention, and once it was determined they were in good health, they were turned over to agents of the National Institute of Immigration (INM), who will communicate with their representatives at the Cuban Consulate. With complete respect for their human rights, they were taken to the Naval Station at Puerto Juarez, to be processed by the authorities according to the Laws that apply.

From por esto Link to their Isla Mujeres articles
Paolo Palazzo, former spouse of Laura Ferri, who is allegedly responsible for the deaths of half a dozen Boxer dogs, confirmed that they are now about to return to Italy, following the controversy generated by this case of alleged starvation of the animals. He went to the newspaper offices of Por Esto to clarify the situation and to disclaim any responsibility because his relationship with her ended over two years ago.
He said although they have been separated, he tried unsuccessfully to give proper food to the animals, but his ex-wife was giving them only vegetables, and this was also the case with their six year old daughter. However, now she and the child have returned to a normal diet, and on Monday they are returning to Italy, at the request of her family.
He said, "This decision makes me happy. I spoke to her father, who has a high economic status, about returning to our country after spending 15 years in Mexico, from Chiapas to Quintana Roo," and he described the problems that fell upon his ex-wife, until she was no longer welcome in the island community, because of her behavior. Tears welled up in his eyes as he recalled the serious difficulties he had when he tried to intercede for his daughter, when she lost weight. On more than one occasion he went to the staff of the DIF, social service agency for assistance, as well as to the police.
He said his former spouse has money, as does her family, but it was her choice to live in a precarious manner and in desperate conditions due to her emotional problems which caused her to live in unfortunate circumstances. Regarding the dogs, when they were still living, over a year ago, he bought them food, but she threw it in the trash. Instead she gave them potatoes and other natural foods that do not work well for dogs. But since they were already separated, he did not have full knowledge of the fate of each of the animals, whom he recognized in the published photos.
The seven dogs were born in Italy and brought to Mexico when they were young, and one more was acquired in Chiapas for a total of eight boxers. They will return to Italy with the remaining dog, after seven died, of whom six died in Isla Mujeres, in less than a year, presumably from malnutrition.
Paolo Palazzo, 55, confirmed that they were married in a civil ceremony ten years ago in his native country, and now he hopes to go back in a few days to formalize his legal separation, putting an end to it, and keeping communication only for his daughter.
He said he hoped to consolidate his little pasta business in La Gloria, because he had chosen to live in Isla Mujeres, but at various attempts to open his own business, the problems described here were a distraction.
Saturday an article was published about the controversy sparked by the death of these animals and the lack of implementation of the law in this case, despite several recommendations by NGO's, like CCDA, about ending mistreatment of pets.

Ten days after the rescue of thirteen Cubans who were 50 miles from Cabo Catoche, the Naval Search and Rescue unit (ENSAR) was sent to rescue people aboard a small boat seen two kilometers from the coastline of Isla Contoy's beach "Las Cruces", based on a phone call from a Park Ranger.
Seven people, five men and two women, were rescued from a rubber boat, which had been sinking over the past three days and their lives were in danger. They were given food and medical care, and once it was determined they were in good health, they were turned over to the INM Immigration authorities, to establish communication with their Cuban Consular authorities to assist in their return.
Their human rights were respected at all times, while they were transferred to the Naval station in Puerto Juarez and handed over to the authorities for the appropriate legal procedures. It is noted that the previous 13 Cubans who were rescued on July 15th, fifty miles northeast of Cabo Catoche, after they were spotted in their metal boat by a plane.
