Agapito recibe Caravana de la Amistad

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 16 de julio.-
Thursday morning, the Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magaña Sánchez, warmly welcomed representatives of the Caravana de la Amistad de Ciudades Hermanas (Sister Cities Caravan of Friendship) in the Yucatan Peninusla. They met and had a pleasant conversation about the benefits of establishing relationships with other cities to become twin cities. Alberto Bache Ceballos who has been a member of the National Committee of Sister Cities for 30 years and is now a promoter of twinning cities in Mexico with towns in the United States, and a promoter of Mexico in North America, offered his full support to achieve twinning agreements and create new opportunities.
A member of the Sister Cities Committee of Santa Barbara (California)-Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco), Art Najera, expressed his satisfaction at being the first in Isla Mujeres, which he described as a place of unparalleled beauty. On behalf of the island people and the government, Mayor Agapito shared presents and promotional information about the island, and received gifts from Santa Barbara, California.
Since the beginning of his administration, the Mayor has expressed an openness and willingness to establish new relationships with other cities and countries in order to maintain a positive image of the island around the world and to establish cultural, social, and economic exchanges outside of the municipality.  Both visitors told the Mayor they are willing to be direct links between the Committee and the municipality of Isla Mujeres to strengthen ties of friendship and brotherhood with cities in the United States.
The Mayor said, "Among the Islanders, there is a culture of friendliness that is very important and part of our success as a tourist destination. To have more friends in other parts of the world makes us stronger." The member of the City administration who will take responsibility for coordination and being the liaison with the Sister Cities Caravan of Friendship is the Assistant Secretary of Government, José Jesús Castillo Magaña.

 Operating two ferries
To ensure adequate service during the vacation season

Para garantizar abasto de productos en el periodo de vacaciones

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 16 de julio.-
Beginning on Thursday, and continuing until August 23rd, the cargo ferry company, Marítima de Transbordadores Isla Mujeres, will be using two ferries,  “Isla Blanca” and “Sergio Gracia Aguilar”, to ensure good service to vacationers and residents during this holiday period when demand is increased. The company has maintained its prices, despite rising fuel costs, which are cheaper for passengers than the rates of the Ultramar and Magana ferries.
Company administrator, Dennis Cano Rivera, said they are currently maintaining the schedule five daily crossings on Monday thru Saturday, beginning at 6am from Isla Mujeres until the final departure at 8:15pm from Punta Sam. On Sunday the first departure is from Isla Mujeres at 8am and the last departure is from Punta Sam at 8:15. He said beginning this weekend, they expect demand to rise and will expand their schedule of crossings as needed to provide good service for their passengers.
He said there are some final adjustments to be made to the ferry "Sergio Gracia Aguilar".

Dismantling of cooperative office
Desmantelada oficina de cooperativa

The former president of the cooperative "Patria and Progreso", has not handed over the financial documents nor the inventory of equipment. Now businessman Alvaro Burgos Rios is being blamed for having dismantled the office of the cooperative. On Thursday morning the office was found with the door open and the file cabinets were empty, and the required certificates and financial documents were not present. The state of the office was shown to the reporter by Jaime Osorio Sanchez, the new president, who said they are seeking to recover the documents and the computer which  are missing from the office. In the office, which is about six square meters, the only document they found was a utility bill which showed a balance owed of 13,334 pesos.
Sr Osorio showed the registered certification of his appointment as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fishing Cooperative of Patria and Progreso, after he was elected at a Special Assembly of the General Assembly on June 29, 2015. He also showed the renewal of registration document he obtained for the cooperative from the Public Registry of Property and Commerce of Quintana Roo, on July 9, which is signed and stamped by Maria de Jesus Tzuc Peña, head of the office.
The cooperative is considering selling their property, with various values, in millions of pesos, being cited. On June 19th, a group of the founders of the cooperative, together with new members, requested the sale to receive "something", complaining that they had not received any significant returns, neither social security or pension, nor a financial accounting for the many decades of the existence of the organization, whose receipts indicate good volumes of seafood are sold annually. Sr. Burgos has managed the business, and billed directly, and has expressed an interest in acquiring the business for the past four years.

Don Buenaventura Delgado Diaz, aka"Colega" celebrated his 98th birthday at his home on Juarez Avenue, with friends and family, where his gifts included a dance by the women around his chair and one sat in his lap. This was shared on social networks, with a video about this fisherman and president of the first fishermen's Cooperative in Quintana Roo, Caribe. He also developed the marketing of seafood products of Isla Mujeres to customers in the interior of Mexico in 1957, when the cooperative Caribe was founded.
At the party he shared cake with the attendees who included most of his four children, 22 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. "Colega" is famous for being a cheerful man of the sea, with many stories based on his own experiences, which are enjoyed at family gatherings, although now he is hard of hearing and needs a device to help him communicate with his family and the friends who visit him at his home. He posed for many souvenir photos with family and friends who expressed good wishes for him in upcoming years.

Consumer Protection Agency establishes module on the island
Profeco establece módulo en la isla.. [+] Ver mas
As summer holiday season is about to begin, the Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) has returned to Isla Mujees, after an absence of some time, to establish a small booth in the Maritime Terminal to serve the public who have consumer complaints. The booth is in a temporary space, as a subsidiary of the Tourist Office, and is expected to be moved to an office in the facility after the start of the vacation season, according to the Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco.
The booth is staffed by Francisco Javier Pech Poot, who is trained to accept and direct complaints. He has already received the first complaint from a Telcel user alleging noncompliance with his contract, and was resolving the problem in an online chat session with the company, until the client was comfortable. Sr. Pech is asking that people come to him if they have a problem with abuse by bad merchants, because they want to put a stop to these practices by some jewelry stores who defraud tourists with false products, such as artificial diamonds, for example, as has happened last year in Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel.
The PROFECO office with have regular office hours in the Terminal, and will focus on meeting the needs of consumers during the holiday period.
