Some hotels in Isla Mujeres will receive awards tomorrow at 10am, from representatives of Expedia and Hotels.com. They will receive "Global Award" recognition, which is given to hotels who are given superior evaluations from their guests, which is considered a testament to the dedication of the employees, and to the high standards of service, of each hotel.

The start of the lobster fishing season of 2015-2016 took place without a hitch and without major results, and it was just a normal working day for the fishermen of Isla Mujeres.
Leader of the Isla Mujeres fishermen, Baltasar Gomez Catzin, said that production of lobster on this first day of the season was not exceptional, but better days are expected. He said that in effect it was just a regular workday without any abundant catches reported by any of the fishing coops of the island.
He said that in July and August production is usually low and that the volume increases a little in September and October, and increases a great deal in November and December, when there are winds from the north, which cause the lobsters to go on the move.

Mauricio Gongora Escalante took a tour of public works in the municipality of Isla Mujeres, as a representative of Quintana Roo for the National Federation of Municipalities of Mexico, (FENAMM), and he met with the directors and leaders in the current administration to ensure better services to the community.
The President of the municipality of Solidarity exchanged opinions, experiences, and knowledge with the island officials who are part of the program "Municipio en tu Colonia".

Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez, confirmed that the hoisting of the "Blue Flag" banner will be held on the downtown beach today. As was previously reported, last week the island received this distinctive award at the Eleventh National Clean Beaches Meeting in Cancun, but the ceremony was delayed until today when the act of raising will take place, with expected attendance by VIPs and officials. The mayor confirmed that after having fulfilled all the criteria required, the island finally received this award, which they intend to continue to maintain in upcoming years. He acknowledged that the task of achieving certification of this beach has not been easy, which included meeting 33 criteria. He said they expect today's event to be attended by the Director of the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), the Vice Admiral of the Fifth Naval Region, the state director of Zofemat, (Federal Zone) and the delegate of SEDESOL, Fabian Vallado, among others

Installation of devices to study the behavior of whale sharks
The Whale Shark Biosphere is working on a project to learn more....about the behavior of whale sharks, and in this way to understand if their conduct is affected by proximity of other species, including humans.
Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas, director of the National Park of Isla Contoy and who is responsible for the Whale Shark Biosphere, said they have been working for several days on installing devices that will analyze behavior.
These devices are intended to analyze the animal's behavior in relation to other animals, in relation to the presence of boats, and in response to large numbers of swimmers in the area. The director of the Whale Shark Biosphere explained that the devices are being carefully installed around the first dorsal fin of chosen sharks and they have the ability to contribute to knowledge about the biodiversity and ecology of pelagic organisms inhabiting the Mexican Atlantic.
She explained that this project, which is called "Monitoreo Ecologico de Pelagicos Marinos en el Atlantico Mexicano," is not just focused on studying the whale sharks, but also on other species including black dolphins, spotted dolphins, dolphins "girador or tomillo", false killer whales, and manta rays. The project involves placing five data collecting devices on different whale sharks and possibly on some cetaceans (marine mammals, like dolphins). These devices allow them to know the trajectory, depth, and position of the animal.
She said the investigations are not limited to the area supervised by the director of the Wildlife Department, but is also taking place in the "Blue/Azul" zone. (The Aguas Azules area and the Aguas Verdes area, aka Whale Shark Biosphere, are administered by two different agencies.). She said there is there is a large gap in knowledge and information about the marine ecosystem of the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula, which is an area of great richness and abundance of species, including those of commercial importance, as well as those that are important as a tourist attraction. She said it is their intention to contribute to the gathering of relevant information to achieve the preservation of this area in order to obtain a sustainable development for the adjacent communities, while at the same time conserving the biodiversity of the area.
This collection of data has the goal of obtaining relevant ecological information to establish a baseline for ongoing monitoring of the region.

The implementation of the 16 percent VAT (Value Added Tax) on foods prepared in convenience stores and supermarkets has caused complaints from workers and other residents, including labor representatives Gervasio Cajún and Ernesto Gómez Tur.
On Wednesday, the Tax Administration Service (SAT) enacted the charging of 16% VAT on 28 foods prepared in stores, including sándwiches, emparedados, tortas or lonches, gorditas, quesadillas, tacos or flautas, burritos, rollos, croissants & cuernitos, empanadas, pizza, guisos, hot dogs, banderillas, hot cakes, alitas (wings), molletes, hamburguesas, bocadillos, sushi, tamales, sopas instantáneas (instant soups), and nachos.

After two decades of use by island families, the walkway around Salina Grande lake has suffered a fracture near colonia Caridad del Cobre, a hole near Amplification la Gloria, and deterioration at various points. It is noted the walkway has a new lighting system, and that it could benefit from more policing.
