ISLA MUJERES, 2 de julio.-
In upcoming days, it is expected that Isla Mujeres will have representation by the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO), which was confirmed by the state representative of that federal agency, Sara
Latife Ruiz Chavez. According to the information provided, the PROFECO office will be provisionally installed within the Maritime Terminal, which is supervised by the Port Authority of Quintana Roo
(APIQRoo).
The office will provide information and give attention to complaints about abuses involving services to consumers. The PROFECO delegate said Isla Mujeres will have an ongoing monitoring process during the summer holidays. She said that although the office will be temporary, there will be discussions with mayor Agapito Sanchez Magana about establishing a permanent office on the island.
It is recalled that on the last inspection by PROFECO last year, of eleven businesses, ten were sanctioned, and later, the seals that had been placed by the inspectors were removed.

Award for quality of public space at Playa Centro

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de julio.-
On Thursday afternoon, the municipal president, Agapito Magaña Sanchez, led the event for the raising of the distinctive Blue Flag, at the beach that is now known as Playa Centro, marking the start of beach season of 2015. This award was granted during the recent Eleventh National Clean Beaches Committee meeting, when the Mayor was given the certificate of guaranteed quality of this public space.
In addition to the environmental benefits that were immediately noticeable, obtaining the certificate will positively impact the influx of visitors and the positioning of Isla Mujeres as one of the best beach destinations in Mexico and the world.
An area of 320 linear meters of beach was certified, which had to meet 33 criteria, grouped into four main areas: management & environmental management; water quality; security & services; and finally, information & environmental education.
From the beginning, the goal was to distinguish Playa Centro as a space that meets these criteria related to good management and environmental management of the beach, with its facilities and safety, including environmental education activities and offering optimum levels of water quality.
Work towards obtaining the Blue Flag certification for Playa Centro began in October 2014 with the taking of samples of sea water to assess quality and to assure fulfilling the technical requirements. Finally on May 19, 2015, the international jury determined the criteria had been met and decided to grant the Blue Flag certification to Playa Centro.
The preservation of the environment is an important priority for the administration of Agapito Magaña Sanchez, therefore they seek to ensure the preservation of beaches, of visitor safety and to raise environmental awareness among the population. For this reason, it was decided to work toward obtaining the Blue Flag certification for the second most popular beach on the island.
The directors of various city department worked on issues such as beach equipment, management, security, cleaning, and customer service for tourists. These agencies included Ecology, Tourism, ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone), Public Service, Police, and Enforcement (Fiscalizacion). Efforts were made by concession holders who joined in the cleanup and renovation of facilities.
The Mayor said, "This afternoon we have planted a seed to have a future that includes ecological conservation and respect for the environment, a future with more beautiful beaches and better care; a seed so that our island remains proud of its past, aware of its present and committed to its future."
Blue Flag is an international certification program for beaches, marinas and ships, which mainly aims to reward those coastal destinations which have achieved excellence in management and environmental management and in the quality of facilities and safety, as well in the implementation of environmental education activities, and who have reached optimal levels in water quality.

At risk of disappearing

The first fishing cooperative of Quintana Roo, Patria & Progreso, which was founded in 1956, is at risk of disappearing, since its founding members have agreed to sell the assets, allegedly not having had a transparent administration for over 59 years, according to data collected.
On Monday the members, old and new, met and agreed to a renovation of the board and to the election of a new president, Jaime Osorio, who reported that the sale of the land and improvements will have to wait, because they have not yet received the documents and financial statements from the previous administration.

Now that the 16% IVA (Value Added Tax) must be charged on prepared foods from grocery stores and convenience stores, vendors of tacos and snacks, who are often of humble means, are concerned that the tax could be imposed upon them next.
Merchants at mercados are also concerned and mentioned paying 2800 for electricity (I think that is bimonthly), 1800 for garbage fees (I think that is annually), paying 700 pesos the required fire extinguishers, and exchanging them annually, and fees for their operating license, to Civil Protection, and others. They complained that the mercado lacks improvements in return for paying all these fees, and that there is outside competition with a vendor from coming from Cancun to sell nearby, daily. At the downtown mercado, business has been worse in recent weeks while the parking lot construction has prevented entry by locals and tourists.

The preparations for summer by the company Marítima Isla Mujeres, which included a meeting, and appointment of two men in the area of maintenance and operations, (as noted in the article translated above). The company, Marítima Isla Mujeres, has increased the round trips between Isla Mujeres and Punta Sam from five to eight per day. Although their focus is on cargo service, they have increased their passenger service, having made a considerable investment in the ship "Sergio Aguilar Grace, which has a passenger area with a capacity for 180 people, in addition to its cargo area.
The company has been affected by the difficult economic circumstances of the country with the increase in the dollar, affecting the cost of mechanical parts. Both boats are used steadily, with a growing number of visitors from the mainland who come to the island for the day, walking toward the Posada beach and Playa Norte.
