Restaurateurs report low activity
Juan Carrillo Figueroa, claims the hotel occupancy figures from the Tourism Office aren't accurate and he thinks occupancy hasn't reached 30 percent, in many cases. He notes that it remained below 30% until the end of June. He said there are thousands of visitors who are not using the restaurants because they arrive with food, or buy it at the convenience stores.
The restaurants near the beach are doing better than those located farther away, and some have cut their schedules while occupancy is low, and not opening in the mornings. He says the restaurateurs and other entrepreneurs want more promotion about Isla Mujeres being free of sargasso, and they want the state government to use the 3% lodging tax to promote this.
