"Ultracarga" ferry begins operations between Isla Mujeres & Punta Sam

On Wednesday, the vehicle ferry "Isla Blanca" suffered an mechanical failure causing delays in service between the island and Punta Sam, which motivated the entry on Thursday of the Ultramar company to provide competition on this route, which had been scheduled to occur within two weeks, according to sources with the offices of the Harbor Master and APIQRoo (state Port Authority). The Maritima boat was delayed about 10 hours due to engine failure, with its first departure from the island occurring just before 4p, after several attempts.
Then the Ultracarga III began offering service, providing two trips from the island at 6:30p and 9p, and departed from Punta Sam at 5p, 7:30p, and 10p, according to reports.
The Ultracarga III ferry was given authorization to begin operations, although the company had not yet set up ticket booths eat either terminal. Ultramar is offering the public discounted prices of up to 50 percent less for the transfer of compact cars, compared to Maritima.  The rates are also considerably lower for cargo trucks also, since the price on Ultramar for a 15 meter truck is 1208, while on Maritima it is 1342. For a motorcyclist, Ultramar charges 90 pesos for the driver and vehicle, while the price on Maritima is 99 pesos plus 40 for the driver.
Both companies offer six crossing, alternating with each other. The Ultramar ferry begins at Punta Sam with a departure at 6am, then every three hours at 9a, 12p, 3p, 6p, and 9p. Departures from Isla Mujeres are scheduled for 7:30a, 10:30a, 1:30, 14:30, 17:30 and 10:30, which should apply Monday thru Saturday.
The new boat has twice the capacity of the Maritima boat. For example, it can fit 60 small pick up trucks and 22 compact cars at the lower level. It has five lanes for large trucks, with three in the bow and the others are aft, for a total of 80 linear meters.
Personnel with the Harbor Master's office confirmed that all the Ultramar documents were in order, they were just waiting for APIQRoo to finish the work at the arrival area, for the ferry's ramp. The ferry had approval from the Navy (Marina Mercante) to provide service on this route, once APIQRoo resolved the ramp issue, but due the emergency caused by the mechanical failure of the Maritima ferry, the entry of the Ultramar ferry was formalized on Thursday. They will establish ticket booths at both terminals in the upcoming days, since their entry into the market was scheduled to occur within two weeks, according to Ultramar executives.
Maritima provided its normal services on Thursday, with the competition. Their other boat, "Sergio Gracia" is receiving maintenance in Ciudad del Carment and is expected to return in September.

The accident occurred near the former Cablevision offices on prolongacion Aeropuerto, which is part of the Caribbean coastal road. The motorcycle was traveling from south to north at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and hit a electrical post. The bike broke apart, and the body was on the pavement, meters away. The deceased was wearing shorts, but apparently was not wearing a helmet since none was found in the vicinity. The autopsy will take place in Cancun on Friday, which will determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol.
The municipal police remind the general public to wear their helmets and not to travel at high speeds, which has become customary for some young people.
