Rubble on the sidewalks

 En el antiguo hangar

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 7 de mayo.- .
There is rubble on the sidewalk near land which was occupied by a Naval hanger many years ago, near the Isla Mujeres airstrip. When there is construction or demolition and rubble is left on the sidewalk and gets into the street, it causes inconvenience and potential danger to pedestrians and vehicles. There is a stretch of about 30 meters along Juarez Avenue near the primary school "Andres Quintana Roo" with rubble in the sidewalk, presumably from a nearby hotel's maintenance work.

Concerns over Salina Grande lake turning yellow

ISLA MUJERES, 6 de mayo.-
This information has already been translated about concerns that hundreds of fish are about to die in the Salina Grande lake, which occurred the past two years, with bad odors, and was attended to by staff from PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection) and the state Ecology Department.

Fumigation cycle concludes in the colonias

ISLA MUJERES, 6 de mayo.-
The Department of Vectors has been conducting an ongoing fogging campaign around the island, including the southern part and the colonias, with the intention of keeping the isle free of dengue. The head of the Department, Jorge de la Cruz Velazquez said, "We continue with the ongoing fight against the mosquitoes who transmit this disease and are currently touring the southern part of the island, completing another cycle of fogging." In recent days they have been working near Playa Lancheros, and now they are in colonia La Gloria.
So far this year, mosquitoes which transmit dengue have not been detected on the island, and therefore the disease has practically been eradicated from the island. Workers at the Community Hospital confirmed this by saying there has been virtually no reported cases of dengue at the hospital in recent months.

Whale shark tour season begins May 17th in "Aguas Azules"
Abrirán temporada de avistamiento.. [+] Ver masPhoto & full article at this link

After a recent meeting with the whale shark permit holders, personnel with the Department of Wildlife authorized them to begin offering tours in the area known as "Aguas Azules" on May 17. This is an area adjacent to the west side of the Biosphere Reserve, which represents a total area of 379,285 hectares (3793 square kilometers). At a meeting this weekend, officials with SEMARNAT (Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources), which oversees the Department of Wildlife, agreed that the boats can offer tours from May 17 to September 17th. They removed the restriction of only going out every other day, which generated considerable controversy.
The rules and restrictions regarding viewing and swimming with the whale sharks are similar to those within the Biosphere. This includes prohibition of the following:  use of non-biodegradable sun block or tanning lotions;  touching, riding, harassing, or damaging the whale sharks in any manner; obstructing their course, using propulsion engines or small rowboats such as kayaks, dinghies, or lifeboats; use of artificial flash in the water; use of tape recorders, megaphones, or any device that produces sounds or noise that could disturb the animals or tourists; discarding any waste or trash; collecting capturing, transporting or fishing any species of wildlife or parts thereof; introducing or releasing any species; bringing pets in the boat; or any feeding of marine animals.
Whale shark permit holders promote their services online, including young Alexader Martin Diaz Coral, who is on the social networks at  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=546834602&fref=ts. He said they follow the safety standards required by the authorities, and that their tour to swim with the whale sharks includes ground transportation for people who are in places other than Isla Mujeres. He has a 31 foot twin engine boat with an awning for protection from the sun, and guides who speak English and Spanish. (Guides who speak other languages are available upon request). They provide a continental breakfast before departure, water and soft drinks, and fruit and sandwiches after swimming with the fish. During the return, snorkeling is offered at the El Yunque reef at the northern end of Isla Mujeres, with a visit to Playa Norte/North Beach, and a lunch of ceviche (seafood). The departure times are 8:30 from the Punta Sam dock or 9am from the Isla Mujeres gas station pier. The cost per person is $120 for foreigners or Mexicans, with all the permit holders offering discounts to residents of Quintana Roo.
