Start of whale shark tour season could be delayed

En inicio de temporada del tiburón ballena

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 5 de mayo.-
The whale shark viewing season is scheduled  for May 15 to September 17 in the "Aguas Azules" (Blue Water), and June 1 to September 17 in the "Aguas Verdes" (Green Water). However, the authorization of renewal of the permits could delay the start of the season, and this possible delay is attributed to the lack of a single/unique 'window' dedicated to processing these documents. At the end of last season, there had been a commitment made to establish this.
There are a total of 304 boats licensed for whale shark tours, of which 150 are from Isla Mujeres, 40 are from Cancun, and the rest are from Holbox and Chiquila. The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, said that at least 80 percent of the licensees have renewed their certificates of Maritime Safety, which is a document required by the Wildlife Department for permit renewal

The Department of Public Safety & Traffic (the police) painted a zebra style triangle to divide the lanes of the street in front of the Fire Station, calle Circuito Colonias, and placed traffic cones in the area. A police officer was assigned to the site to direct drivers & assure traffic was flowing correctly to avoid any accidents. This area functions like a glorieta (a traffic circle), and therefor drivers are advised to be cautious when driving thru this area.

We are continuing the work of improving the public parking lot beside the Town Hall and ask your patience and understanding regarding any inconvenience this causes & apologize to the neighbors & users.

May 6    Jorge Martínez Peña, the newly appointed director of the high school, Colegio de Bachilleres de Isla Mujeres, said it is his goal to prepare students to work in the new hotels that are being built in Isla Blanca and Punta Sam.
He said it is important to pay attention to the academic indicators and to have communication between the school and the parents. He said the level of student achievement is not bad, according to the statistics, but can be improved. They are working with administrators and teaching staff toward reducing the dropout level, which is currently at 20 percent.
Work is planned to repopulate the native plant population on the campus, for example with clumps of "chit", to help protect the iguanas, and more vegetation. There is no new information regarding the controversial former director, Javier Solís Martínez and the accusations against him of financial mismanagement.
