The Tropical Storm "Karen" was an excellent practice of coordination and prompt response by the Committee of Civil Protection of the municipality and the state. Now for improvement, a Municipal Subcommittee is being formed, with participation by the teachers and campus directors, because the schools serve as options for shelter during severe weather. The Commandante of the Navy base suggested that households create an "emergency kit" containing personal documents, nonperishable food, water, and a first aid kit to name a few items. He said it is important that each household be prepared in case of a weather impact, for at least 48 hours. He noted that children are a most effective tool to change the way adults think, and this is demonstrated in their caring about the environment.

Aseguran que hacen falta más policías

0 04 de octubre de 2013   City Council member Abirán Fuentes Cruz, president of the Comisión de Seguridad Pública of Isla Mujeres, said there is an urgent need to streamline the police department and seek management of resources to expand the number of officers, because currently there are only ninety-two. Of these 92, there are 25 in administration, and of the rest, some are assigned to Traffic Division, and the others are distributed across the island, the continental zone, and Francisco May. He said the lack of officers is due to the lack of resources and because the city does not qualify for a grant from SUBSEMUN (Grant for Municipal Security). Therefore, the City Council depends of resources from the state government, which was one of the documents approved of last week. For now the safety of the citizens is guaranteed, but there is a need to hire more officers. He will discuss the issue with the Mayor and the Department of Human Resources, since it will involve the City payroll.

    Maestros siguen faltando

    0 04 de octubre de 2013

    Por Carlos Gasca .-

The schools are lacking five teachers, and the supervisor of the district 039 in Isla Mujeres, Guadalupe Briceño León, said she hopes the Secretaría  of Educación and Cultura solves the situation promptly because it is affecting ~150 children. At the elementary school "Andres Quintana Roo", a teacher took early retirement, which is also the case at "Cesar Mendoza Santana" and "Julio Saury Espinoza.  Regarding the other teacher lacking at "Cesar Mendoza Santana" the class has had three teachers assigned to them, and each has left for various reasons. The other school affected is on the mainland where a teacher left due to pregnancy. The supervisor said the parents complaints about this problem are legitimate, but the vacancies should be filled shortly.

Por Esto says the mobile vendors must be selling without permits because the City is busy with the governmental changeover. PE says this affects the sales of established businesses who pay for their operating licenses and taxes, and that they should be controlled by the Office of Enforcement (Fiscalizacion).
