Isla Mujeres won first place as a romantic travel destination to visit as a couple in the category of "Party Lovers" at the tourism conference for Pueblos Magicos, with Holbox and Cancun in second and third places. The municipality has about 60 hotels with nearly 5000 hotel rooms.Weather reduces tourism
Turistas ahuyentados por las lluvias
Rainy and cloudy weather on Sunday morning decreased tourism, despite the weather improving in the afternoon.Port was closed for small boats
El puerto fue cerrado a embarcaciones menores
At 6:15 on Sunday morning, the port was closed for boats under 40 feet due to weather associated with Cold Front #8, affecting about 600 small boats who are usually engaged in the fishing and tourism industries. There were weather forecasts of north-northwest winds of 30 to 40 km/hr with stronger gusts, as well as waves of 0.90 to 1.83 meters, poor visibility for navigation and light to heavy rains.
Lobster production increases
La producción de langosta incrementó
Production of lobster and fish improved during the last half of October, and it is hoped that lobster catches will improve further after the passage of Cold Front #8, because 'nortes' stimulate the crustaceans to move across the seabed, facilitating their capture. In the entire state, cooperatives have captured about 170 tonnes of whole lobster, of which about ten tonnes were caught by the five cooperatives of Isla Mujeres.Production has increased in this northern part of the state, which includes Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox, while it has decreased a little in the southern zone, for both lobster and fish. There are about 10 or 15 boats dedicated almost exclusively to catching fish, and in recent days each one has caught between 100 and 120 kilos of fish, mainly sierra, and some have achieved catches of up to 200 kilograms, according to the head of the Regional Federation of Cooperative Societies of the Fishing Industry in Quintana Roo, Baltazar Gómez Catzín.
In response to a question, he explained that most of the lobster is sold in Cancun to intermediaries who export it, mostly to China and Japan, and who make the majority of the profits, despite the fishermen being the ones who risk their lives. He noted that about six years ago about eight cooperatives in the state attempted to organize to market the lobster themselves without success.
