The number of lobster fishermen treated for decompression continues to increase LINK
With more than three months remaining before the end of lobster catching season, the number of patients treated for decompression illness continues to rise. The doctor in charge of the Hyperbaric Chamber, Dr. Heli García Molina, said this is due to the lack of responsibility of the fishermen-divers, who don't respect the diving protocols.
He said an unprecedented 144 patients have been treated since the season began on July 1st, which is unheard of in the history of the Board. During last year's lobster season, between July 1st and February 28th, there were 43 fishermen treated.
Policarpio Pastrana, Director of Fishing, said classes have been taught by Dr. Garcia Molina explaining the risks and the measures they should take, but unfortunately there is little or no interest in attending. He said that of a total of just over 300 fishermen, between 30 and 40 fishermen attended, while more than 140 have been affected this season alone.
The doctor has been warning the fishermen about abusing the rules about depth and dive time, but they are descending to more than twice the recommended depths. He said the norms that they are equipped and qualified for are about 70-90 feet, but now they are going down to 190 feet, which is a serious risk for their health.  They do this because lobsters are scarce, but they not only go deeper, they also increase the amount of time they are under and the number of dives they make.
Dr. Garcia Molina said the most serious thing is that many of the fishermen continue to use alcohol or prohibited substances, which increase the risk of a decompression-related injury. He said that drugs give them a false sense of security, when in reality they are pushing their health to the limits.  They are given a false sense of confidence and they forget about being dehydrated because of being hungover, and they are able to dive without pain, but the truth is the effects of these substances are a deception and when those effects pass the consequences occur, and many times it is too late.
The doctor said that unfortunately, the work of the lobster fishermen is increasingly complicated, risky and continues to put their lives at risk.

New rules & increased security after fire at Isla Contoy fishing camp  LINK
The director of Isla Contoy National Park, Maricarmen García Rivas said that following the fire in the ecological reserve last week, security and surveillance will be increased.  Interviewed by telephone, she explained that the rules have changed as a result of these events, and if this occurs again, then they will need to close temporarily until the fishermen can organize.
She said fuel storage will no longer be allowed inside the huts, which could complicate the work of the fishermen. She said it is unknown if the fire was caused by an oversight by the fishermen, but the accumulation of fuel inside the camp will not be allowed. When asked about the possibility of filing a complaint, she said it is up to the person affected to file a report with the prosecutor's office.

Robberies at two hotels by hooded thieves within two hours   LINK~SIPSE
The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) sent agents from Cancun to assist in the investigation and operations to detain those responsible for robberies at two hotels on Isla Mujeres within two hours. Employees of the Izla hotel in Sac Bajo, Erick N, 28, and Benito N, 23, told police that around 4am six to eight hooded persons with firearms entered, made threats, and asked for the location of the safe. The employees replied, and gave them the key, but a second key was needed, so they went and got the guard with the key. The employees were tied with plastic straps (zip ties?) and their eyes were covered with duct tape. The thieves took their belongings and Erick's 1400 pesos and 35,000 pesos of the company's money, but they were unable to open the safe.
The second robbery took place around 5am at Casa de los Sueños hotel, located on the road to Garrafón Park. The guard, Nemesio N., said about eight people carrying firearms and wearing balaclavas entered and threatened and beat him. He was tied with plastic straps and his eyes were covered with duct tape, until he managed to get loose after some minutes and asked a guest for help to call the police. The thieves took nine iPads, 600 pesos, and all the money from three safes, but that amount was not disclosed. The Red Cross paramedics transported the guard to the hospital. (Source-SIPSE Nov. 18)

An accident occurred downtown when a golf cart rented from the Bahia agency ran into the back of a golf cart rented from Gomar's which hit the back of a Honda car that was parked. An injured male person was taken to the hospital by Red Cross paramedics, and the tourists and rental vehicles were taken to the police station to determine responsibilities. (photos)

Sea grass added to list of species at risk

Pasto marino, en la lista de especies en riesgo

There are 42 species in the At Risk category, which underwent four changes, as well as taxonomy updates for 133 species. Isla Mujeres historian, Fidel Villanueva Madrid, who is an advisor to the Isla Contoy Reserve, said there is an urgent need for studies of marine flora and fauna. He said, "I have frequented our coastline since I was a child, and today I see how huge grasslands have disappeared due to the overpopulation of turtles. While in 1984, it was urgent to put them under ban, today it is necessary to know the size of their population, because they are bleaching the seabed and thereby affecting other animal species, particularly in the waters around Contoy."
