4th Meeting of the National Network of Security and Justice Boards (RNMSJ)
Mayor reaffirms his commitment to work for the peace of Mexico LINK
With the objective of working together with the three levels of government to achieve the pacification of the country, the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, attended and received recognition for his outstanding participation in the 4th Meeting of the National Network of Security Tables and Justice (RNMSJ) which was inaugurated by the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González.
The mayor said these types of meetings are important because they reaffirm the commitment to continue teaming up with citizens and governments to guarantee the peace and security of everyone. He said that in Isla Mujeres it is a priority to establish a close relationship with the population, therefore, one of the most active departments is the Crime Prevention Department. He said home theft has decreased in just one year by almost 40 percent.
Official promises new Hyperbaric Chamber in 2020
State legislator said that during his visit to Mexico City, he had a meeting with Juan Antonio Ferrer Aguilar, director of the Federal Institute of Health and Welfare, which included the need for a new hyperbaric chamber for Isla Mujeres. The new Chamber will be obtained in 2020 and will have a capacity to treat two patients at once, and will be attended by trained personnel. This will benefit the local fishermen and can also be used for the treatment of 'diabetic foot'. The current chamber has completed its lifetime, and the federal official responded postiviely to this request. A Cancer Hospital is planned in Chetumal also. LINK
Residents living near the airport buildings are working on a legal strategy to make the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) relocate the large power plant that was installed in front of their homes, because they dislike the loud noise it makes when operating, and they are concerned about the thousands of cubic meters of diesel fuel stored nearby. The plant arrived in March, and has been used sporadically. Some of the nearby homes are private residences and others are used as vacation rentals. The neighbors claim the plant is correcting the demand that now exists in Punta Sur, and should be placed their, where it wouldn't "affect third parties as is currently the case". LINK

Confían en repunte de invierno
Although hoteliers have space for more reservations, they anticipate good occupancy rates in the winter. The Tourism Department said occupancy on the island is nearly 45%, while it is 66% in the Continental Zone. Tourism service providers note there are many tourists who visit the island for a few hours, although the ones who arrive on all-inclusive tours don't leave very much money on the isle. During the Christmas season, occupancy is expected to reach 90 percent. It is noted that there are many visitors from the US and Canada who return year after year, and recommend it to their friends and family.More lobster fishermen-divers treated for decompression illness
Aumentan pescadores descompresionados
Since lobster season began on July 1st, there have been 136 fishermen-divers treated in the Hyperbaric Chamber for decompression illness, which is an alarming number, especially considering there were a total of 63 treated during the entire 2017-2018 season, and 48 in the 2016-2017 season. The season concludes on February 29th. Fishermen say they have no choice but to dive deeper, due to the shortage of product, and at time they go down more than 100 feet, sometimes two or three times, which increases their chances of suffering decompression, according to Rosemberg Dzul Ochoa, who is in charge of the Hyperbaric Chamber.Hundreds of diabetics benefited
Decenas de isleños diabéticos beneficiados
About 300 islanders benefited from the free Diabetes Clinic, held for the eleventh consecutive year to provide glucometers and supplies, as well as education and reading glasses. The clinic was held at the Senior Citizens Center, where testing was also provided for family members who accompanied the diabetics.Diabetics were given glucometers and supplies so they can monitor their blood sugar levels, and they were taught how to use them. They were taught about nutrition and offered free reading glasses. Islanders who'd received machines in previous years brought them back for battery replacement and to obtain more strips, which indicates there is an increasing culture of prevention in regard to measuring blood sugar levels.
The President of the nonprofit organization, Club Pro Paciente Diabetico said they will be holding another clinic on November 13th in the Continental Zone at the Community Center from 9am to noon, where they expect to see about 100 people. Organizer Karen Rosenberg said, “The general recommendation for everyone, not only for diabetic patients, is good nutrition and exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, which are the key to diabetes prevention and control. Once you have diabetes, it is important, rather, it is essential to follow medical treatment.” She said it is important to visit the doctor periodically for routine check ups, which allow diabetes to be detected in a timely manner.
All human rights complaints have been resolved, except two are in process
Es requisito probar que no tienen queja alguna por violación a los derechos
Martha Patricia Puc Laines, who is in charge of the Human Rights Commission of Isla Mujeres, explained that applicants for state jobs with SAT, Public Security, and the Attorney General's office won't be hired if they have a history of violating human rights. She said this year there were a total of 20 complaints made, with first place being against the police department, on the mainland and the island, and second was the middle school. She said all the complaints were resolved and agreements were reached, which were mostly managed by the new middle school principal, while the complaints against Public Security were mostly resolved during processing, and only two remain open, because they are still being processed. She explained that the complainants filed for violation of the right to petition, after they requested information and were refused, but technically they are both resolved already, for the simple reason that at the time they entered the complaint, the other party must give an answer, which must necessarily include the required information.Damage continues to Makax Lagoon
Continúan dañando a la laguna Makax
In Sac Bajo and along the Cañotal road, irresponsible people continue to throw litter and rubble along the banks of the mangroves, which accelerate their deterioration. The lagoon is a refuge for the reproduction of marine species such as lobster and conch, which are becoming harder to find in recent times. There are increasing numbers of boats using many docks, which belong to hotels, marinas, restaurants, private residences, and tourism-related businesses. There are about 30 legal and 'irregular' docks , and Por Esto says there is a lack of monitoring by the authorities, including PROFEPA, ZOFEMAT, and the municipal Ecology Department. It is noted that PROFEPA closed a construction site on April 9, where mangroves were being cut, presumably for the construction of another pier. A few weeks later the closure banner was gone, after the situation was 'regularized', and now the pier is finished, despite the fact that the required cutting more mangroves and affected the nearby marine life. Many business procedures require traveling to offices in Cancun
Los trámites sólo se resuelven en Cancún
Businessman Gerardo Magaña Barragán complained that many procedures require traveling to the mainland, because the main offices are located in Cancun for the ISSSTE, IMSS, Telmex, cell phone companies, and other businesses. The exceptions include CFE and Aguakan, who have offices on the island, and he noted that the roads spoiled by Aguakan and the delays have negatively affected this vacation destination.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
