~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Daily maintenance by City keeps beaches clean and free of sargasso
Every morning from 5am to 10am, a crew of workers cleans the beaches to comply with international standards that attract tourism and, in turn, benefit the economies of families. They remove the trash and sargasso, and rake and sift the sand.
The director of ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) in Isla Mujeres, Kerem Pinto Aguilar, said, "It is a priority of the City administration to preserve the good image of the tourist attractions of Isla Mujeres, since tourism is the main source of income that directly benefits the islanders. It is important that the citizenry and government work together to take care of our island's environment."
It is noted that the beaches of Isla Mujeres, North Beach, Playa Centro,and Playa Albatross have received international recognition for their high quality and services, with the distinctive Blue Flag certification from July 2019 to 2020, thanks to the work done by the current municipal administration, led by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
Your pet, your responsibility. Why do you have to pick up the your pet's feces? Because they produce bad odors, because they are a source of infections, they make the streets of the island look bad, because it is your responsibility.
Alistan las playas para las vacaciones
With two more weeks until the start of summer vacation, the buoys bordering the two main swimming beaches of Isla Mujeres have been reinforced. It is noted that the size of the swimming area of Playa Centro hasn't been decreased this year, with the southern winds, as occurred last year, to the point where the buoys came to be on the sand. The sand is accumulating at North Beach, where the Cardenas family placed a 'geotube' last fall to help preserve the beach and reduce erosion.Raising awareness about sea turtles
Incubation pen Tortugranja (not 2019) |
Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.
