The two high schools (Colegio Bachilleres) schools in the Isla Mujeres municipality have been awarded the "Green Flag" certification, from the "Eco School" program, promoted by the FEE, Foundation for Environmental Education. One is located on the island and the other on the mainland in Ciudad Mujeres. This international program aims to promote environmental improvement in schools and changes that lead to a more sustainable and responsible school environment, and effects that begin in the classrooms, expand throughout the schools, and affect the community.
On Wednesday, Bureaucrats Day was celebrated in a pleasant fun atmosphere of fellowship, with recognition to City employees, and the Mayor noting the importance of professionalism, teamwork, and commitment. Individuals were also recognized and food was shared.

Property dispute of ten years continues concerning land by "La Curva"

Five taxistas have been given permits to act a comisionistas, which angered the comisionistas working at the Maritime Terminal. Personnel with the municipal Department of Tourism said the taxistas were certified and accredited to work the area between 7-11 and Sr. Frogs, but only to obtain clients for taxi rides, and not to sell other activities or services. The members of the tourist cooperatives say the number was previously limited to 30, and they object to the fact that now five more have suddenly been certified. The tourist police intervened when comisionistas with the "Isla Bonita" cooperative encountered the taxistas acting as comisionistas near the Maritime Terminal, to prevent a confrontation. (photos)

Property dispute could cause eviction

A press conference was held concerning a property dispute affecting owners of 36 lots in the area known as "La Curva", who say they will not leave the land they have occupied for ten years. There were threats of eviction last week, and the press conference was held at the home of señora María de los Angeles Novelo Torres, legataria in the property dispute concerning 18,421 square meters.She presented legal documents that have been 'invalidated' by the decision of a federal judge, but a counter complaint is being filed concerning alteration of documents. She said they are going to show that this is an intention to twist the law, using a judge, and a lawyer has already been hired.
Ms Novelo Torres encouraged the residents to be united in the face of the eviction attempt by the Adame Torres family, led by former mayor Paulino Adame Torres. She presented documents showing that the aforementioned property was bequeathed to her by her aunt Rosa María Torres Suárez, former local legislator, in 2006, before a notary public of Mérida, Yucatán, Gustavo Monforte Luján. In point 7 of this document notarized in Merida, it says legataria María de los Angeles Novelo Torres and Claudi Aguilar Torres have equal parts of La Curva.
She said this inheritance process was 'knocked down' in December, and now five women are appearing as new owners, who are her relatives, Fidelia, Lucila, Julia, Emilia and Aurelia Torres Suárez.

Operators of the Hyperbaric Chamber say in the three and a half months since lobster catching season ended on February 28th, there have been twenty cases of decompression, in divers who are using compressed air to catch fish. During the eight month lobster season, there were more than 70 patients treated for decompression. The staff anticipate another high incidence in the upcoming season which begins on July 1st.The Tiburoneros de Isla Mujeres plan to have a soccer team in the Third Division next season, now that the soccer field has been renovated.

On the mainland in Punta Sam, the Paradisus hotel is filling in beach area in the Federal Zone, which is generating concern that the water and power lines to the island could be put at risk, affecting the 30,000 inhabitants of the isle, and tourism. There is concern that the construction of a 'protector' by the hotel could have a boomerang effect and change the currents to cause erosion in the area where the utilities are located, about 100 meters away. Those who are concerned want governmental authorities and specialists with Aguakan and the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) to investigate.Tourism cooperatives opposed to increasing the number of comisionistas

Representatives of the tourism services organization "Isla Bonita" said that there has been agreement for some time with municipal authorities not to increase the number of 'comisionista' promoters, which included the other tourism services cooperatives; “Adolfo López Mateos”, “Isla Mujeres”, “Un Día Perfecto” and “Punta Sam”.After an altercation took place on the outskirts of the Maritime Terminal with new comisionistas, representatives of five nautical service cooperatives are requesting that the municipal authorities not increase the number of comisionistas due to the excessive number of promoters on public streets already.
Five former taxi drivers have been given credentials to operate on Morelos street, but at noon on Wednesday they moved to the Maritime Terminal, and a verbal confrontation occurred with members of the Isla Bonita cooperative. A representative of the Tourism Department, Maria Delgado, intervened to calm the situation, who had full knowledge of the facts, having been a member and president of the Adolfo Lopez Mateos cooperative.
The taxi union, "Gustavo Diaz Ordaz" didn't endorse the comisionistas, saying they were ignoring the issue, since those members were acting separately. Miguel Aldana, who is a member of the "“Promotores Turísticos/ Promoters of Tourism" coop with 42 members, who work along part of Rueda Medina, confirmed that areas are assigned to each group; and he was in support of the cooperative members.
(Another article noted that the five new comisionistas were only authorized to sell taxi-related services and to work in the area by 7-11 and Senor Frogs.)

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

The baseball games at the El Pescador stadium in front of Chedraui are usually held on Sundays, starting around 1p, when there's a 'home' game. .

Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.

Whale shark tour season continues throughout June, ending in mid-September.
Saturday June 1 & Sunday June 2: "Dry Law" is in effect for 48 hours, from the first minute on Saturday (00:00, just after Friday midnight) until midnight on Sunday (24:00) when "To Go" (package) sales of alcohol is prohibited. Foreigners in tourism areas, such as Isla Mujeres, may purchase alcoholic beverages, with food, at bars & restaurants. Citizens can't buy alcohol & businesses such as convenience stores cannot sell it.

Saturday, June 1st Dia de la Marina. Events begin with a 5 kilometer race in men's and women's divisions, and another for teens and children, starting in front of Playa Centro at 7am and 8am, with more than 17,000 pesos in cash prizes. Limited to 150 runners in the 5k, and 150 in the youth and children's event.
The official ceremony for National Dia de la Marina will take place at 11am, with a procession of boats in the Bay and placing of a wreath.
On Playa Centro, a beach soccer tournament will start at 11am, with teams of eight people and prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos. It will be followed by a beach volleyball tournament at 1pm with teams of two men & two women competing for prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos.The festivities will come to a close at 2p, with a Palo Encebado contest.
