Commemoration of "World Oceans Day" with clean-up of coastal areas
For World Oceans Day, June 8, volunteers helped clean the mangroves, with support from agencies including Tortugranja, the municipal Department of Ecology & the Environment, Accion Isla, Asociación Parley, and Manta México Caribe, as well as the general public and members of various tourist cooperatives who transported volunteers to the islet "El Islote". Seventy volunteers in five boats cleaned the mangroves and seabed near the islet and the entrance of the Makax lagoon.
World Environment Day Clean-Up at Mundaca Hacienda
Approximately 250 kilos of trash were removed from the Mundaca Hacienda by about 50 volunteers as part of the "World Environment Day" activities. Supporting organizations and businesses included Dolphin Discovery, Accion Isla, Club Albatros, Isla Contoy, El Garrafón, and CONANP (National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, as well as employees of municipal departments. This green area is considered as the "lungs" of the island, especially since green areas have been reduced by urban development and increasing construction.

Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) continues to review taxis LINK - The Isla Mujeres delegate for the Mobility Institute, Bibian Castillo Dzul, said that the operations will continue to be focused on taxi service, this because only 36 units have made their "Payment of Rights" out of the 150 units that are registered with the agency. The is a new fee/tax required by the state government.
Government reviewing "Letters of Assignment" issue LINK
It is estimated that about 90% of the holders of the "Letters of Assignment" will be ineligible for the lots held by SEDUVI, Secretariat of Urban Development and Housin, because they already have property in their name. It has been 14 years since more than 2300 "Letters of Assignment" for lots in a housing development in the Continental Zone were distributed (for payments) by the mayor at that time, Paulino Adame Torres (2002-2005) in the final days of his administration.
Last week, SEDUVI began meeting with the holders of the documents, but those who own property would be ineligible for this benefit, and could only access the housing program by making a direct contract with the Sadasi group. In the past 14 years, many of the document holders have purchased property or gotten married with joint ownership of property. A meeting is planned on Fridayby SEDUVI for those with "Letters of Assignement" and the Sadasi group.

The Ministry of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (SEDUVI) offered to resume an old claim regarding the distribution of housing lots in the Continental Zone regarding 200 hectares of municipal land donated by the municipal government of Isla Mujeres in 2008.In 2005, during the final days of the administration of former mayor Paulino Adame Torres, more than 2000 "Letters of Assignment" were distributed for residential and business lots in the Continental Zone. The recipients each made a payment for the documents, but the lots were never delivered.
Last week, SEDUVI began to cite the beneficiaries by groups, giving priority to residents of Isla Mujeres with the "Letters of Assignment", to provide them with lots with services.
It has been said, unofficially, that only those who comply with all the guidelines required by the Housing Law will benefit, and for this specific case, that none of the beneficiaries have property in their name. Those who own property would not qualify for this benefit and could only access the housing program by making the direct contract with the SADASI group.
According to some of those who already attended their appointment with SEDUVI, it is the situation that in the past 14 years, some have purchased property or gotten married, which can be an issue since they now have joint property.

Due to strong winds from the south, the Harbor Master restricted boats under 40 feet to port on Saturday, including the whale shark tour boats and tour boats to Isla Contoy. On Saturday, June 8, volunteers with Accion Isla commemorated "World Oceans Day" by cleaning the area of"El Islote", which is located by El Farito. The effort was organized by Kai Creamer of "Accion Isla" and departed from the wooden "Magana" dock, now known as "Muelle Azul". In this area are the deteriorated remains of three shrimp boats that ran aground during Hurricane Gilberto in 1988, as well as remains of the first vehicle ferry "Isla Mujeres" (and the former 'bottle islands').Accion Isla provided gloves, bags, and drinking water, encouraging volunteers to bring a reusable water bottle and wear long sleeves, a hat, and eco-friendly insect repellent. They also asked volunteers who had them to bring boat hooks and scissors to remove trash caught in the roots and branches of the mangrove plants.
The City, in coordination with Accion Isla, organized nearly 100 volunteers to clean the entrance area of Makax lagoon and around El Islote islet. They removed dozens of bags of trash.
Eighty percent of the pollution in the oceans originates on land and includes about 8 million tons of plastic waste yearly. Plastic waste clogs the waterways, harms the communities that depend on fishing and tourism, kill turtles, birds, whales and dolphins, and reaches the most remote areas of the planet and all the links in the food chain which we all ultimately depend upon."
Students want class on the island

According to data obtained, around 80 percent of students in the third semester, which are a total of16 and 20 students, require "regularization" classes, which is a total of 16 to 20 students. These classes aren't offered on the island, and they must cross to Cancun. The Director of Colegio Bachilleres had said they would be available on the island, but there are no provisions to offer this. With the number of students who have failed and must take these classes, parents want them provided here to avoid the expense and time involved with commuting to Cancun, and they also worry about the safety of their children.Isla Mujeres news briefs

The "El Pescador " baseball field is ready for the game between the undefeated Isla Mujeres "Cockteleros" and the Los Tomateros. (It doesn't mention where they are from, nor when the game occurs, but it's probably today, Sunday, at 1pm). This is the fifth round of games in the Puerto Morelos League Championship Tournament III.Selections for the Isla Mujeres soccer club "Tiburoneros" will take place on June 10, 11 and 12 at the Salina Chica soccer field from 4p to 6p for players born from 1999 to 2004.

On Friday, the whale sharks weren't observed, which disappointed many tourists, and some tour operators attributed their failure to feed on the surface to the southern winds which increased at midday. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. In June, fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Octopus, Shrimp, Conch & Shark Lobsters kept in captivity continue to be available, along with frozen tails. LINK
The baseball games at the El Pescador stadium in front of Chedraui are usually held on Sundays, starting around 1p, when there's a 'home' game. .

Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.

Whale shark tour season continues throughout June, ending in mid-September.
Saturday June 1 & Sunday June 2: "Dry Law" is in effect for 48 hours, from the first minute on Saturday (00:00, just after Friday midnight) until midnight on Sunday (24:00) when "To Go" (package) sales of alcohol is prohibited. Foreigners in tourism areas, such as Isla Mujeres, may purchase alcoholic beverages, with food, at bars & restaurants. Citizens can't buy alcohol & businesses such as convenience stores cannot sell it.
Saturday, June 1 Clean Up with Accion Isla 8a-10a Meet up north of the gas station
Saturday, June 1st Dia de la Marina. Events begin with a 5 kilometer race in men's and women's divisions, and another for teens and children, starting in front of Playa Centro at 7am and 8am, with more than 17,000 pesos in cash prizes. Limited to 150 runners in the 5k, and 150 in the youth and children's event.
The official ceremony for National Dia de la Marina will take place at 11am, with a procession of boats in the Bay and placing of a wreath.
On Playa Centro, a beach soccer tournament will start at 11am, with teams of eight people and prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos. It will be followed by a beach volleyball tournament at 1pm with teams of two men & two women competing for prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos.The festivities will come to a close at 2p, with a Palo Encebado contest.
