Hyperbaric chamber is ready for lobster season

The Hyperbaric Chamber, which has been used for the treatment of decompression for twenty years, is ready for this lobster season which begins in a week on July 1st. Last season there were 74 cases treated, which is an increase over the previous season's total of 63. North Beach has earned the Blue Flag designation and the banner may be hoisted soon. This is one of two new Blue Flags for the Isla Mujeres beaches, and Playa Centro was recertified.. It is noted that both Playa Centro and North beach remain clean and free of sargasso.The head of ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) in Isla Mujeres said that a crew of 15 people clean these two beaches, of more than a kilometer, every morning 5a-10a, removing the small amount of sargasso that washes up, and raking and straining the sand.

News summary (published yesterday)
A campaign to cleanup and beautify downtown began on Thursday, with hundreds of City employees and volunteers participating on Friday. They painted curbs and crosswalks, swept & washed streets and sidewalks, and removed litter & debris. Yesterday, the cleanup moved to the colonias and the Mayor announced there will be an ongoing "Sabados de Isla Verde" campaign, with crews of City workers cleaning and beautifying the island every Saturday. Residents are strongly encouraged to participate in their neighborhoods. The cleanups will also include the mangroves, coasts and beaches.
Tomorrow, the President of Mexico will conduct his usual Monday morning press conference in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres at the Ciudad Militar (military base) there. He plans to talk about the Tren Maya (Mayan Train) project, sargasso, and social development programs. Today he's visiting Tulum & Playa del Carmen.
Last Sunday a sixty-year old French tourist fell more than ten meters (>33 ft) from a cliff at Punta Sur, due to a lack of caution while taking a selfie photograph. Luckily he landed on a patch of sand, without life-threatening injuries. He didn't lose consciousness and it took nearly an hour for firefighters & others with Civil Protection, the Red Cross, municipal Police to transport him up the cliff to the ambulance. He was taken to the Community Hospital where he was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder and multiple abrasions. His family expressed their appreciation for the rescue. Personnel with CP have participated in training session on those cliffs, in preparation for accidents such as this.
On Monday afternoon, local fisherman Jose Casto Valladeres spotted a small Naval boat being capsized by a wave near the area known as "La Bandera". He rescued the crew of four sailors who were having difficulty staying afloat despite their life jackets, due to the weight of their boots and clothing. Then he jumped in the water to save the sinking vessel by tying it to his boat. They were able to pull the boat afloat, and a P114 Naval patrol ship arrived to assist, whose crew gave Mr Casto a round of applause. The fisherman said he doesn't usually take that route home & doesn't know why he chose to go that way on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Chief of Police clarified about an erroneous report of a robbery at two downtown convenience stores on Rueda Medina, explaining that there was a altercation at one of the convenience stores by a tourist who was dissatisfied with a cup of coffee and threw it on the cashier, took his money and left. On Thursday, there was a false announcement circulated on social media & to downtown merchants that Aguakan was suspending water service to the island for three days this weekend. Aguakan reported that was false and reminded residents to check their official Facebook page for reliable information.
Whale shark tour operators are reporting that business has been decreased so far this season, but they expect it to pick up now that the summer vacation period has begun. They are asking for more surveillance by officials and complaining about noncompliance including the following: the maximum of 120 boats isn't being respected, visitors aren't complying with the requirement to stay at least 5 meters away from the whale sharks, and the boats aren't maintaining the required distance of 12 meters away.
On Tuesday afternoon, veterinarian Dr. Delfino Guevara suffered a fractured ankle when his scooter skidded as he avoided a golf cart that veered left toward him while he was passing it on on the Caribbean coastal road. The Red Cross ambulance took him to the Community Hospital, but X rays were unavailable at the facility, so his girlfriend took him to the veterinary hospital to perform the X rays himself, and then to be evaluated by an orthopedic doctor. Police took his scooter, the golf cart, and the tourist driver to the police station to determine responsibilities for the damages and expenses. The vet clinic remains open and he expects to return to work this next week.
The swimming beaches of Isla Mujeres remain free of sargasso, which is also not affecting the eastside beaches where turtles are nesting. There are nightly patrols by staff & volunteers with the Tortugranja to protect the turtles and collect the eggs to incubate at the facility. Every morning from 5a to 10a, there are crews of workers cleaning the swimming beaches & the general public is reminded to put their trash and cigarette butts in the appropriate receptacles. Much of the Mayan Rivera continues to be plagued by large amounts of sargasso washing up.
Tourism has increased by 14 percent since last year, which City officials attribute to promotion, being a Pueblo Magico, offering a safe, clean destination with good cuisine & many water activities, and always taking care of the environment. The beaches are in optimal condition and free of sargasso, as well as being listed as the ninth best beach in the world by TripAdvisor. Soon both Playa Norte and Playa Centro will have the Blue Flag award, indicating excellence in cleanliness and services.
When lobster season reopens on July 1st, the prices will be remain the same as last season at 550 pesos per kilo of tails and 290 per kilo of whole lobster which is about $14/lb and $7.25/lb. This is their breeding season, and catching them has been banned since March 1st. In June, fishermen in this region are banned from catching Lobster, Octopus, Shrimp, Conch & Shark.
Last week a family in La Gloria lost all their possessions, and their pet, when their humble home of plywood and tin was consumed by fire. A bazaar sale was held for their benefit, and donations are being collected by Shaunny Figueroa and by Ruben's Restaurant isla mujeres.
Residents are reminded to compact their trash and to separate organic & inorganic garbage. (Also separate aluminum cans, which workers or passersby can exchange for cash.) More trucks are now available to transport the accumulated trash from the Transfer Facility to the mainland, removing 100-110 tons daily.
Officers with the municipal police force arrested the two men who are suspected of robbing the SIX convenience store in colonia La Gloria and the gas station along the Caribbean road. One was recognized while attempting to return the rented motorcycle they had used, and his accomplice came to the agency when there was a delay. They were identified as having tattoos and clothing similar to those in security videos distributed on social media, and the scooter was returned without its decals. Another arrest is expected of the woman who rented the scooter and left identification. It was reported that 15,000 pesos were stolen from the SIX and 860 pesos from the gas station.
Controversy continues over the 1800 "Letters of Allocation" for lots in Continental Zone issued in 2005 during the last days that ex-mayor Paulino Adame was in office. Islanders paid 2400 and 4000 pesos for residential & business lots, for a total of over 5 million pesos. The next Mayor lacked resources to subdivide and develop the property (which still lacks access), so she donated the 200 hectare property to the governmental agency INFOVIR, (Institute for the Promotion of Housing and Property Regulation), who were expected to meet the housing needs of the islanders. In 2010, INFOVIR violated this contract and sold the property to a realty company. Islanders filed a lawsuit and the state is currently trying to resolve the situation. However, the state is refusing to give subsidies to any Letter holders who own property or whose spouses own property, which eliminates many of the islanders, who have married or acquired property in the past 14 years since they paid for these lots. They are considering further legal action and peaceful protests.
The Women's Fishing Tournament "La Dorada" will be held next Saturday, June 29. The Captains dinner will be Friday evening, which is the deadline for registration.
Yesterday, Acción Isla continued with their mangrove cleanup efforts, which have been focused on Islote Carbonera lately, with assistance from the Navy and many groups & volunteers. They estimate about 20 tons have been removed so far, with about 20 more tons to go.
The Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) conducted another operation on the island and impounded an alleged "pirate" taxi, owned by former taxi union director "Wato" Eduardo Peniche. He explained that the taxi had been decommissioned recently, but officials impounded it because it was circulating with taxi plates and decals. The driver was also detained for his behavior with officials while they were impounding the taxi. In the past two months, the agency has impounded 13 golf carts, and one other taxi.
On Saturdays at 8a-10a, you're invited to join the volunteer "ploggers" cleaning up the isle, with meetup locations announced at Acción Isla. Bring your refillable bottle & they'll supply gloves, water, & bags. On Wednesday nights at 8:45p, Isla en Bici invite people to join them for healthy recreation, meeting at Juarez & Abasolo. Lights required, helmet recommended.
In regional news, a new road is planned to facilitate traffic from Cancun to the mainland by Holbox island, routing it thru Francisco May in mainland Isla Mujeres, reducing the distance since the current route goes thru Valladolid. Also, two "Jaguar Crossing" signs have been placed along the road between Cancun & Chetumal, and 57 more are planned in the region, including along the Ruta de Cenotes. A research project identified where the largest number of animals are being hit, including deer, coatis, jaguars, & pumas and sponsors are being sought for the signs.
The City is conducting ongoing Crime Prevention workshops, with twenty-five participants at the most recent one, whose topic was juvenile rebellion. The City also hosted hurricane preparedness workshops for those in the tourism industry, especially hoteliers, which provided information about the digital services for tourists in the event of a hurricane: "Guest Locator" and "Guest Assist". The City will be offering beginning and intermediate classes in Sign Language and Braille at the CRIM facility and registration is currently open. Last week there were talks at local schools promoting the sport of boxing, for discipline, fitness, and self defense. Friday, there was a job fair at the Bicentennial dome with more than 20 companies participating.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Turtle nesting season continues throughout June. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills, and very rarely, a Leatherback will attempt to nest, but the sand usually isn't deep enough. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.

Saturday June 1 & Sunday June 2: "Dry Law" is in effect for 48 hours, from the first minute on Saturday (00:00, just after Friday midnight) until midnight on Sunday (24:00) when "To Go" (package) sales of alcohol is prohibited. Foreigners in tourism areas, such as Isla Mujeres, may purchase alcoholic beverages, with food, at bars & restaurants. Citizens can't buy alcohol & businesses such as convenience stores cannot sell it.

Saturday, June 1st Dia de la Marina. Events begin with a 5 kilometer race in men's and women's divisions, and another for teens and children, starting in front of Playa Centro at 7am and 8am, with more than 17,000 pesos in cash prizes. Limited to 150 runners in the 5k, and 150 in the youth and children's event.
The official ceremony for National Dia de la Marina will take place at 11am, with a procession of boats in the Bay and placing of a wreath.
On Playa Centro, a beach soccer tournament will start at 11am, with teams of eight people and prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos. It will be followed by a beach volleyball tournament at 1pm with teams of two men & two women competing for prizes of 3000, 2000, and 1000 pesos.The festivities will come to a close at 2p, with a Palo Encebado contest.
