Naveganto: Ready to begin operations
Naveganto, lista para operar [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Most of this information has already been translated. PE notes that if the docking tests go well, they tentatively plan to begin operations on February 15 or 16, to become the third company offering service to Puerto Juarez, in addition to Ultramar and Marinsa.
Each of the two ferries is 300 tons, 46 meters long and 8.5 meters wide with space for 200 passengers; They have an air conditioned room for 82 people with an ocean view, and an area on deck for 120 more passengers.
They arrived in Quintana Roo from Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, with federal passenger transport permits to cover the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route, and they obtained their authorizations from the Naval Merchant Marine Coordinator on September 12, 2017. They may conduct their docking tests in Puerto Juarez on Thursday and in Isla Mujeres on Friday.
Nautical tourism providers are pleased
Operadores náuticos, de plácemes [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Nautical tourism providers are pleased that the weather has been good, and the forecast is favorable thru Feb. 15, and no port restrictions are anticipated this week.
Overall hotel occupancy in the municipality is at 67%, with occupancy in the Continental Zone at 65.67% and on the island it is 69.11%.
The fishermen are busy during these final days before the four month lobster fishing ban begins March 1st. Their situation is especially difficult in March, because both lobster and grouper are banned then. (The two month ban on Grouper fishing began Feb. 1st). Good catches of lobster and fish are being reported.
The island continues to be without public transport
La isla continúa sin transporte público Ver masFull article at this link
The problem of a lack of public transportation on the island cannot be resolved until the previous concession is officially revoked. The contract with the company Isla Turicun expired in April 2015, and there has been alack of bus service for nearly three years. Alderman Roberto Martinez Aragon has requested that the revocation procedure be initiated at the upcoming City Council session, since the company did not comply with the terms of the contract.
In an interview the Councilman for the (minority) party MORENA spoke about the urgent need for the islanders to have another form of public transport, besides taxis, who do not always provide good service, because they clearly prefer tourists, especially foreign tourists, and many cabbies won't stop for schoolchildren. (Residents pay a discounted rate, and for students it is only 7 pesos).
He said, "I have an amparo (official document) ready to file with the Federal Judiciary against the City Council, asking them to respond with the reasons why the Council is not assuming its responsibility to provide the citizens of Isla Mujeres with a social service as elementary as urban transportation, allowing the taxi drivers union to continue with a acquired monopoly, which gives them carte blanche to do or not do whatever they want, to the detriment of the users."
He said, "Depending on the response I am given, I will act accordingly and if it is resolved in my favor, then I will proceed against the entire City Council, of which I am a member, for ignoring this citizen petition." He said he presented the Council and the Mayor with a petition to activate urban transport on January 30, 2016, which he has repeatedly tried to address at the Council meetings, but the other members have not responded.
Mr. Martínez Aragón said that he believes he has done everything and somehow must apply pressure for the Council to assume their responsibility and to ask the Mayor to implement urban transport. He said it is now the responsibility of the municipality to enable public transportation, if it is going to request feasibility studies and what is required. He said he has already made the request that revocation procedures for the concession be initiated in the upcoming Council session, since the company did not comply.
Massive die-off of fish in Salina Grande lake
Muerte masiva de peces en la Salina Grande.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Most of this information was translated yesterday, and it is noted that there are concerns that this incident could be caused by pollution, because it is not normal in February. It is also noted that the lake's area is 15 hectares, and that the previous die-offs took place in May 2014 and May 2015. At that time, specialists said the cause was not contamination, but that it was due to the increase in water temperatures at that time of year, which caused a chain reaction due to the shallowness of the lake.
The lake no longer connects with the sea, so there is no possibility of fresh water. The stagnation of the water could cause a lack of oxygen, and there are concerns about possible pollution by leaky septic tanks, as well as all types of trash.
