In order to maintain the welfare and safety of citizens, today we delivered equipment and tools to the personnel of the municipal Civil Protection Department LINK VIDEO
The Director of Civil Protection,Helman Ulises Berman Graniel reported that the municipal government delivered 27 complete uniforms to the personnel of Civil Protection and Fire Coordination:- short-sleeved shirt, long-sleeved shirt, pants, gloves and boots. For the lifeguards, they provided snorkeling equipment and complete uniforms. wet shirts and shorts.
After many years, thanks to efforts and the work of the municipal government, the personnel of Civil Protection are provided with new equipment and better technology, which will help to safeguard the life and integrity of the islanders.
The City of Isla Mujeres reaffirms its commitment to continue guaranteeing the protection of islanders and visitors through actions that allow the Departments of Security and Civil Protection to perform a better job for the benefit of society.
The delivery ceremony was held at the facilities of Civil Protection and Fire Department. Mr Berman Graniel said that from the first day of this municipal administration, the government has been committed to not only improving, but also modernizing the agencies in charge of the security of the islander.

There is a VIDEO showing a man being loaded into the ambulance and reporter & the Director of Civil Protection explain: A construction worker received a strong shock while working on a roof in Salina Grande, from a high tension line, apparently due to human error. He was conscious and responding appropriately, and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"We are committed to Isla Mujeres, to providing good services, and reaching the hearts of the islanders," said Guillermo Rosas, one of the representatives of the Naveganto ferry company that will start operations on the Puerto Juarez-Isla Mujeres route in upcoming days. He did not give details about fares and said this information will be available after approvals are completed with the federal authorities.
Docking tests are expected to be completed in the upcoming days. It is noted that the new company will be in competition with Ultramar, as well as with Marinsa, who began operations in mid December, who are having a good number of passengers. Marinsa recently announced that they will replace their current boats with catamarans, to compete with Ultramar.
There is another company from the US, that is seeking to enter the market during this year, and it is not clear if Barcos Caribe will arrive in a partnership with Marinsa, or if they will continue with their plan to operate two modern ferries, which has been put on hold for the time being.
Currently there are more than three million tourists a year that are transported by the ferry companies (For 2017, APIQRoo reported 'movements' of just over 5 million passengers, which would mean about 2.5 million arrivals, in comparison to 2.2 in 2016.) Ultramar transported a majority of these passengers.
It is noted that the Hotel Zone in the area of Isla Blanca and Punta Sam is growing at a high annual rate, and will have nearly 7000 rooms by the end of 2018, doubling the number in 2017, according to the Department of Tourism. The Cargo-Tourism route to Punta Sam will soon have competition, because Ultramar plans to enter that market in upcoming weeks with a modern ship with capacity for more than 50 compact and cargo vehicles, as well as 300 seats for passengers. It with compete with Maritima Isla Mujeres, which has recently become associated with Marinsa.

There was a brief drizzle of rain at 10am due to the effects of the arrival of weakened cold front #27, which didn't change the orientation of the easterly winds, with strong gusts at times, according to sources with Civil Protection and the Harbor Master's office. The clouds cleared away two hours later and activities in the Bay weren't interrupted, and tour boats from Puerto Juarez continued to arrive. The entire recreational and passenger fleets were active to meet the demands for their services.
The winds in the Yucatan Channel weren't favorable for the lobster fishermen, with gusts up to 40km/hr and waves up to two meters high, according to the Navy report. Similar weather is expected at sea on Saturday, and caution is advised.
The brief rain lasted several minutes and caused people already at the beach to seek shelter, and then they immediately returned to the beach and the water. The rays of the sun returned, allowing visitors to enjoy the various points of interest of the island.
Dive shop managers said they didn't have cancellations due to the cloudy weather at dawn, and they hope that the report of the National Weather Service is correct and there won't be any greater effect from this fron, that they should be able to accommodate their customers without interruption.
Visitors were enjoying nautical tours to the National Marine Park, and 200 tourists departed to enjoy the National Park of Isla Contoy. Fishermen went out to work, with caution.
Tortilla prices expected to rise

Due to increasing rates for the cost of freight for corn flour, as well as for the costs of raw materials and supplies, it has become impossible to maintain the current prices for tortillas, and an increase is expected at the end of the month. Details of these costs and of the expected increases are given.
The price of masa is expected to remain the same, while the cost of a kilo of tortillas will rise form 18 to 19 pesos without wrapping and from 19 to 20 pesos with a wrapper. Since June 2017, there has been increases of at least 20 percent in the cost of freight, propane, electricity, and fuel.

There are construction workers on the site, which is located in front of the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in colonia La Gloria. There are plans for the University to assist families who have limited resources, beginning in 2019, so that their children will have the opportunity to study for careers without crossing over to Cancun or going to distant cities. The classes are expected to specialize in careers associated with tourism, including hotels, languages, gastronomy, maintenance of air conditioners, and maintenance of boats and yachts.
This project has been in the works for three years, and the main manager has been parish priest Raul Sanchez Alonso. There was a formal ground breaking ceremony on January 15 by Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, Bishop of the Prelature Cancún-Chetumal, and Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, municipal president was a special guest. During this event it was announced that the time frame for putting the university into operation would be accelerated for the benefit of the dozens of young people who leave the Colegio de Bachilleres each year, without being able to continue with their academic preparation.
Father Sanchez Alonso said, "Many who leave Colegio de Bachilleres (high school) do not continue their higher education, then when they are employed in the tourism industry, they do not have the credentials to occupy executive positions in the growing hotel industry in the Continental Zone of Punta Sam and Isla Blanca." He said, "The objective of this project of the University of Isla Mujeres is to ensure that all students entering the College of Bachilleres can continue their higher education; to reduce the dropout rate, to give everyone the opportunity to study something here on the island, so that they can work right here, where the growth of the hotel industry is a reality."

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
