Today we commemorate the 20 th anniversary of the death Ramón Bravo Prieto, famous oceanographer, communicator, researcher, ecologist, scientist, cameraman and Mexican writer who lived in Isla Mujeres. (posted yesterday)
In the company of his widow, Maria de los Angeles Vallejo de Bravo, those present deposited a wreath on his bronze statue while remembering his great career as an underwater researcher, contributing to documenting of the cave of sleeping sharks, which was discovered by local divers.
Among his works are the documentaries "Diving Among Sharks", "Diving at the North Pole" and he was the author of the books "A Treasure Under the Sea", "The Cenote de la Carnada", among others. (In Spanish...I translated the titles).
Antonio Coronado Rojas, general secretary of the City Council, said that for the municipal government it is of great importance to pay homage to people who, over the years, have contributed their knowledge to improving Isla Mujeres. Names of officials in attendance are given.
It was on February 21, 1910 when the Cruz Roja Mexicana/Mexican Red Cross was founded, a humanitarian movement whose passion to serve others.

There's a video of the Harbor Master saying the port remains closed for small boats due to the weather, forecasts of easterly winds gusting up to 47 km/hr and waves of 2.5 meters in the Caribbean and 1.5 meters in the Bay. Boats are suspended from going to Isla Contoy. This is likely to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours. LINK
Lent has begun, and there is not enough fish LINK
The president of the Fishing Cooperative "For Social Justice"/ “Por la Justicia Social”,,Baltazar Gómez Catzín, explained that there are several factors affecting the fishermen, so that they cannot meet the demand for seafood during these 40 days of the Lenten period.
The most recurrent problem is poor weather, which prevents them for going out to work. Another problem is the current ban on grouper, which began on February 1st continues thru March 31st. (The grouper ban also means they aren't supposed to use nets or long lines).
In addition to being in the midst of the grouper ban, the lobster ban is about to begin on March 1st, which will last four months, until the season opens on July 1st.

Annual collection effort in Isla Mujeres for the Red Cross LINK
The collection will begin today with a donation to be delivered by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, and the goal this year is 300,000 pesos. For those who wish to donate directly, this can be done at HSBC bank to account #4057272262 of the Isla Mujeres Red Cross. A donation is also expected to be delivered from the Navy. At the conclusion of the event, there will be two recognition awards for benefactors of the Red Cross.
APIQRoo (State Port Authority) says preliminary reports indicate a mechanical failure was the cause of the explosion on the ferry in Playa del Carmen LINK
The General Director of APIQRoo (Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo), Alicia Ricalde Magana, said that in regard to the explosion on one of the Barcos Caribe ferries that operate on the route between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, the preliminary report indicates the cause was a mechanical failure.
The official said that the Harbor Master's Office, the Department of the Navy (SEMAR) and the National Defense (SEDENA), as well as the Attorney General's Office (PGR) and the Federal Police cordoned off the area to begin the appropriate investigations immediately.
According to the Ministry of Health's report, 18 people were transferred to a private hospital in Playa del Carmen, of whom several were discharged, the others are reported as not serious, and one person is under observation. All received immediate attention from the state and municipal public security authorities who worked in a coordinated manner.
Ms. Ricalde Magana reported that the municipal, state and federal authorities are conducting the corresponding investigations to determine the causes of the explosion that occurred at the maritime terminal of Playa del Carmen.
She said, "Fortunately, there were no deaths to regret in the explosion that occurred this afternoon in one of the boats of Barcos Caribe, who operate between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel."

Former Magaña boats could return to the Isla Mujeres - Puerto Juarez route
Two of the boats that were part of the fleet of the ferry company "Transportes Marítimos Magaña" some 10 years ago could return and compete on the route from Isla Mujeres to Puerto Juarez, after a complete rehabilitation and adaptation of their structures. It has been confirmed that after the boats "Mis Valentina" and "Caribean Miss" were sold, they were adapted and improved, with the intention that they return and compete on the route between Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juarez, a route where for some time they were the only ferries.
Ten years later, now they could come to compete not only with Ultramar, but also against the ferry companies "Naveganto" and "Marinsa", who are both entrepreneurs from Ciudad del Carmen in Campeche. The former Magana ferries are now yellow are called "Jetway I" and "Jetway II" and are located in Progreso Yucatán.
It has been learned that the two boats were sold by the Magaña family (Arminda Magaña) and the new owner decided to change engines, make changes in the structure and leave seats on the deck, something they did not have before. (Photo at LINK)

Remembering Ramon Bravo

The 20th anniversary of the death of journalist, sportsman, writer, documentary maker and environmentalist Ramón Bravo Prieto, was commemorated by his students who taught them to preserve the environment, through of talks on the beach about the need to conserve the resources that today are scarce like fish. He died at his home in Isla Mujeres from a heart attack caused by an accidental electric shock.
He formed the first ecological group in Mexico, named the "Circle of protection of marine flora and fauna" with Miguel Povedano, Rafael Burgos, Manuel Cárdenas (RIP), Humberto Moguel, and Agapito Magaña, among others.
By receiving basic conservation instruction from Bravo, and combining with the knowledge that these youngsters acquired in schools outside the island, they became multipliers of information to the children, and they gave talks in schools here and in other places, as did Ramón Bravo. One of his students, Humberto Moguel, remembered these times and spoke about them.
He said, "Ramón Bravo had a strong position of conservation of the Isla Contoy National Park in 1993 when it became a place of prostitution, cantina, and excesses by some fishermen. He denounced it in national media, which generated the temporary closure of the site by then President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
This angered the local fishermen because it prevented their entry, their leaders made death threats against Bravo, and he took precautions. During a talk with this reporter, he said that no one enters his house and those who did would be greeted with his gun. Nothing happened, moving on to greater things.
He was a brave defender of nature, and as with Isla Contoy, he defended marine species and their study. He made several underwater documentaries, including one that highlights the migration of lobster from north to south along the coast of Quintana Roo.
He also filmed the behavior of sharks, turtles, and corals. He facilitated the arrival of specialists from National Geographic to discover the cause of the stillness of the sharks in the now famous Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, located three miles north of Isla Mujeres.
He also contributed to the arrival of the great French commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau who arrived with the ship "Calypso" to conduct investigations into this phenomena.
He was born on October 21, 1925 in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, and settled in Isla Mujeres in the 1970s, although he had visited years before. He also filmed many underwater scenes of Mexican and foreign films that took place on the island and elsewhere. He was in love with the place.
National award
He was given the national journalism award in 1979. His house has still not been rescued because he was in legal conflict during all this time, therefore, everything inside deteriorated. There is no access. There, much of his work has been ruined, according to his friends and students.
Mr. Bravo Prieto was also an outstanding athlete, he participated in the XIV Olympic Games in London, in 1948, and in the XV Olympic Games in Helsinki, in 1952, as well as in the Pan American Games and the Central American Games.
In 1960 he began to devote himself to diving and underwater photography. His works made him famous in the United States and Europe. He won the gold stars Maurizio Sarra in 1964 and 1966. In 1969 the Italian director Bruno Vailati invited him to collaborate with him as a cameraman, and for seven years he filmed scenes for the series The Encyclopedia of the Sea, The Seven Seas and The Men of the Sea .
He won numerous prizes of different types, not only in the water, but also as a journalist. In1979 the construction of his house, "Villa Sirenia", began on Isla Mujeres, which was where he completed much of his research and writing.
He died on February 21, 1998 accidentally, due to a myocardial infarction caused by an electric shock at his home. His ashes rest in the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks with a plaque which says: "Ramón Bravo Prieto, protector of the sea and the ocean, sleeps forever by his sharks in this cave. Isla Mujeres 28-02-98 ".
The official event was held in the morning, along the road to Garrafon, which is 300 meters north of his house.

See article in TVIM about the former Magana boats that were sold and renovated and are now at a Progreso shipyard. This article notes that the company Luminese Cosmetic, a US company, requested information from APIQROO, the port authority, concerning their desire to enter into competition on the Isla Mujeres-Puerto Juarez route. Barcos Caribe had expressed interest in this route in 2016, but it is unknown if they are still interested.
Ultramar, Marinsa, and Naveganto expect to move 5 million passengers on that route this year, (Note: a passenger taking a round trip is counted as 2 'movements', so that would mean 2.5 million passengers arriving to Isla Mujeres), after 2017 closed with 4.5 million movements (or 2.25 arrivals).
In addition, the Punta Sam-Isla Blanca area is growing by leaps and bounds with the construction of luxury hotels, where Isla Mujeres is expected to have more than 25,000 hotel rooms within twenty years, with development on the mainland part of the municipality. Ultramar will soon be competing on this route.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel.
