From the Municipal Facebook site.....  (  FB page link)

With 108 participants, we celebrated World Wetlands day by cleaning the mangroves of Macax lagoon.  Let's take care of our natural resources together! LINK
In commemoration of World Wetlands Day, the municipal government cleaned the mangroves of the "Macax" lagoon in coordination with island students, public officials, and local businesses. There were 108 participants and more than 850 kilograms of garbage were collected. (That's nearly a ton of trash: 1870 pounds).
Carlos Barranco García, Director of Environment and Ecology, explained that the current administration is committed to the conservation and care of the environment, especially this important ecosystem, which functions as a purifier and generator of fresh water, generating sources of work in fishing and tourism, and it provides a protective barrier against hurricanes.
He said,  "This year we are carrying out this activity under the slogan 'Wetlands for sustainable urban development', and we want to raise awareness among entrepreneurs that development is not in conflict with the environment, but by integrating our resources into the plans, we can have more benefits and protect our flora."

Managers with the Ultramar company, confirmed that two new ferries will be arriving next week, after the final details are completed on their interiors. LINK
Germán Orozco Sarro, General Director of Ultramar, said  "I call them the Ferrari's of the sea, because they combine not only speed but also elegance." They should arrive in a few days and will complement the current flotilla to ensure quick service between Isla Mujeres and Gran Puerto.
The two new ferries have a capacity of 270 passengers each, or 20 more than those currently in use. They were built in New Orleans, and will have seats on two decks taking advantage of that space, as well as more luxurious seating inside.
The Ultramar company currently moves 95 percent of the passengers and although Marinsa has entered as a competitor, it is still Ultramar that continues to be preferred.
Mr. Orozco Sarro said the company has always been concerned about providing the best boats, but acknowledged that the issue of customer service has been neglected, which is now being addressed. He said, "I think we have focused on providing the best boats in the world, but I think we have to work to offer more warmth and attention, which we are working on now."

"Clean Up" needed among Traffic police
Demandan “limpia” en Tránsito [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Feb. 2.  Today, representatives of the business community  requested that the municipal government put a stop  to the alleged cases of extortion that have been aired on the Internet, in recent days, by bad officers in the Traffic department;  to conduct a thorough investigation;  to "Clean up" the police force; and to implement a training program for officers to improve their performance in dealing with visitors.
The entrepreneurs who expressed their concerns include Juan Carlos Peña, vice president of the CANACO; Armando García and Baltazar Maldonado, representatives of the restaurateurs; and Gerardo Magaña, from the small hotels association. They said there are allegations of extortion on social networks about officers demanding money from visitors without issuing any documents, written by those who say they were directly affected. This generates a bad image, and could affect the repetitive visitors, who might stop coming if this bad practice continues. It damages the hoteliers, restaurateurs, and souvenir shops.
Mr. Maldonado said, "We ask that each reported case be investigated, and that a program be instituted to train all the officers to stop these irregularities, because tolerating it causes irreversible damage to the image of this destination."

Tourists take advantage of good weather
Turistas aprovecharon el buen clima.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Feb. 2 Tourists and providers of tourism services enjoyed the nice weather, on land and at sea. Although Cold Front #26 has entered the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to arrive on Sunday with diminished strength, and shouldn't interrupt tourism. Good weather for tourism is expected to continue at the beginning of next week.
Tours were able to go to Contoy Island for the second day, where the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of being a reserve of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) is being noted by permit holders, fishermen, and environmentalists.
Boat tours were being offered and going a good business, and the fishermen were able to go out for the second day in a row, returning with lobster and fish. The forecast by the National Meteorological Service for the Yucatan Channel indicates they should be able to work for the next several days.

Owners of small hotels concerned about occupancy rates
Preocupación entre hoteleros en pequeño  [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The owners of small hotels say they have an occupancy rate of  40 to 60 percent, when last year it was at 90 percent."The only good thing is that we had 100 percent occupancy on December 30 and 31, but from that moment on, it has descended, into early February, which generally has good levels, but it is still slow now, said Gerardo Magaña Barragán, vice president of the Association of Small Hotels Fascinantes of Isla Mujeres.
Mr. Magaña Barragán expressed his concern about the frequent reports from the municipal tourism office saying that Isla Mujeres is experiencing high rates of hotel occupancy, while that isn't happening in the small hotel sector,  and generating that information, he warned, could be counterproductive because the Federal Treasury could suspect alleged tax evasion. He said, "There is a low rate of hotel occupancy but the authorities insist that we are full."
