Recognition and prizes awarded to youths in honor of International Youth Day. There were six nominees who were recognized and the winners in two categories were the young engineer Armando Alcocer Torres with his business “Pet Isla", which seeks to raise awareness in the community about the importance of recycling and caring for the environment; and Ilse Alejandra Peña May who won the prize for her altruistic work.
An agreement has been reached with the ferry company for a special crossing at 4am, beginning today to transport trash and remove it from the Transfer Facility, which will continue as long as necessary, because this summer vacation season has generated many tons of trash.
Youth Week events around the state on August 15th include a conference at 10a at the City Council room in the Town Hall.

Boat will be awarded to the Treasury Department

On June 11, Navy personnel rescued the four crew members in the boat "4 Hermanos" when they sought assistance after a mechanical failure. The Navy towed the boat to Isla Mujeres, ensuring its safety and that of its crew, who were unable to present documentation of legal ownership. It was noted that the name was painted 'precariously' on the boat. The crew said they weren't carrying the documents for security reasons, to prevent their loss, and were advised to present the papers later, which hasn't occurred. Custody was transferred to the Harbor Master.The President of the cooperative Justicia Social, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, came forth in a timely fashion to explain that their coop has a boat registered to that name, but it was not this boat, which is believed to be cloned.

The municipal government supports the state government's decree in regard to the Police Emergency Law. The SCJN, Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has validated and approved this law in other states, including Nuevo Leon. It is a limited, temporary initiative to ensure public order, which confers powers to the governor to oversee the municipal police when necessary to ensure the safety of the citizens. It applies exclusively in cases of force majeure or emergencies, and when it is over, the command would be restored to the municipalities.Increasing medical services

As of Saturday, August 17, the Community Hospital will have two more specialists, an anesthesiologist and an obstetrician gynecologist who will provide their services on weekends. With these two new hires, the hospital has a total of eight specialists. Recently a group of eleven interns arrived, including four medical interns, a therapist, six nursing interns, and a psychology intern.The anesthesiologist will work on Saturdays & Sundays from 8a to 8p, and the gynecologist will be on weekends,and soon a gynecologist will be available seven days a week, according to the Hospital Director, Dr. Leily Osorio Mares.
She said there has been a significant increase in acute diarrheal diseases lately, associated with high temperatures or due to a lack of hygiene, noting people need to be in the habit of washing their hands frequently. The other main illness are respiratory, which she said were associated with sudden changes in temperature, from the heat into air conditioning. They also see many patients with obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.

Negotiations continue in Chetumal to determine the basic taxi rate for residents between the colonas and downtown, which was expected to increase by 20% from 15 to18 pesos. Currently the rate from downtown to the tourist attractions are: Playa Norte, 50 pesos; Punta Sur, 105; Garrafón, 100, Tortugranja, 75, Playa Indicio 80, Captain Dulché 75, which are on display, along with others.After several months of delays, the municipal government announced a request for bids to provide urban transport services, and the company who is awarded the contract will be known before the end of the month. It is expected they will provide services by the end of the year or early 2020.
The transportation situation facing salaried workers shouldn't require them to pay 30 percent of their income for public transportation, while roads are becoming saturated, according to residents.

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

The baseball games at the El Pescador stadium in front of Chedraui are usually held on Sundays, starting around 1p, when there's a 'home' game.
The new date for the Women's Fishing Tournament "El Dorado del Caribe" hasn't been announced yet.

Turtle nesting season continues throughout August. The turtles nest along the eastern beaches in the wee hours of the night and Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in a pen outside the facility. Three species nest annually in Isla Mujeres; Greens, Loggerheads, and Hawksbills. The sex of the turtles is determined by the temperature of the sand, which is common in reptiles.

Thursday-Sunday August 8-11: At the children's baseball field "Ariel Picho Magana" Players age 11 & 12 from the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and of course Quintana Roo, including some from Isla Mujeres will compete. About 100 players and their families are expected.
Monday, August 12: Perseids Meteor Shower peaks, but the nearly full moon will interfere.

The City will hold an Art Fair ("Primera Feria del Arte") on the Town Square at 7:30p on Friday, Saturday & Sunday featuring more than a thousand pieces. There will be 29 local artists and 20 from other parts of the state. An invitation is extended to visitors & locals to attend & to become familiar with, appreciate, and acquire artisan products that preserve techniques learned from previous generations, which strengthen the economic, social, cultural and environmental sustainability of the island.
Friday, Aug. 30 The 7th Lion Fish Culinary Contest at 5p on the Town Square. The City invites residents, restaurateurs, independent chefs & fishermen to participate. Registration deadline is Monday, Aug. 26. The dishes can be prepared with filets or a whole fish, and participants can compete in both categories. Recipes must by provided. BYOLF. Booths can promote your business or yourself & may feature menus, drink samples, and decorations. Winners are given recognition, a pass for two to Dolphin Discover, and 5000, 3000, and 2000 pesos for the top three.
The Circuito Maya race will probably be held in August in Isla Mujeres, and is one of a series of four races held annually in four Pueblos Magicos in Q.Roo and Yucatan, named after the four elements. The race in Isla Mujeres is the "Air" (Iik') and the others are Fire (K'aak'), Earth (Lu'um), and Water (Ha'), for the races held in Tulum, Bacalar, and Valladolid.
