Good hotel occupancy

Buena ocupación hotelera

Between April 29 and May 5, hotel occupancy on the island was 64% and on the mainland part of the municipality it was 77%, for an average of about 72%. Hoteliers note they have many reservations for the summer season, saying that many tourists want to avoid long trips from the Maya Riviera to go on whale shark tours. That season ends Sept. 17 (and was scheduled to begin yesterday, but the officials haven't released the permits yet).

Isla Mujeres news briefs

BREVES DE ISLA MUJERES

Teacher's Day in Mexico was commemorated by municipal officials at the Monument to Teachers on prolongacion Jesus Martinez Ross in Amplificacion la Gloria, which was attended by educational authorities. Recognition was given to those with 25 and 30 years of service.
Free tubal ligation will be provided at the Community Hospital on May 31 to women who preregister and who don't want to have more children.

Exceptional student competing in academic olympics

Destacado estudiante, por IM en olimpiada escolar

Roberto Angel Martinez Mendoza, who is in the sixth grade at "Jean Piaget" school, has qualified for the academic olympic competition to determine which ten students will represent the state in the national competition. There were 26,000 students in the first level, and next he will compete with 110 students at the competition in the state capital of Chetumal

Whale shark tour licensees awaiting release of permits

No hubo avistamientos del tiburón ballena

Although the season for whale shark tours was scheduled to begin yesterday, May 15th, the boats were unable to go out because officials haven't released their permits yet. The season is scheduled to end on Sept. 17th.
In accordance with the Management Plan:
There will be 120 boats, of 36 feet in length, allowed to go out daily, with a limit of ten passengers each.
All boats must take a day off providing tours on the 30th of each month, and August 30th is International Whale Shark Day.
The first group of boats leaves the pier at 7a,  the second group departs at 9a, and they must all be out of the observation areas by 2pm.
For each boat, only one guide and two tourists will be allowed in the water at a time. As long as the boat's capacity isn't exceeded, a translator or photographer may be included, who is not a guide, and who is identified by a badge, shirt, or vest.
The consumption of alcohol or drugs are prohibited.
A controversial issue is the requirement for tour operators to report daily before 8p to SEMAR (Navy)/Harbor Master/CONANP who have departures scheduled for the following day.
