EVENTS:

Today (Friday) more than three dozen actors will participate in the 27th annual Via Crusis reenactment of the Stations of the Cross, which begins at the Sacred Heart Church in La Gloria at 10:30a and goes to the Guadalupe Chapel in Salina Chica. It continues to the Immaculate Conception church on the Town Square, where the representations of the crucifixion will be staged at 3p. At 3:30 is the reflection on the seven words.
At 7pm, at both downtown and at Sacred Heart in La Gloria will be a celebration of the Word, adoration of the Sacred Cross, and a silent procession with rosary thinking of Mary.
Tomorrow at 7:30 downtown will the Eucharist and vigil, with a representation of the resurrection at 9p. At the Sacred Heart Church in La Gloria, the Eucharist and vigil start at 9:30p.
Masses are at their usual time on Easter Sunday.

The Ploggers cleanup is cancelled tomorrow, but you're invited to pick up litter on your own, and to join the Earth Day seabed & coastal clean up event on Sunday! The Ploggers will be back next Saturday!

Today, the full moon rises (~7:30p) in the east around sunset (~7p). As it wanes, it rises ~an hour later nightly; Sat at 8:36, Sun at 9:36, Mon at 10:33 and Tue at. 11:28. It follows this pattern every four weeks. It will appear to be full tonight & is always an impressive sight reflecting across the Caribbean.
The April moon is called the Pink Moon for an early spring phlox ground-flower called "moss pink". This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first astronauts walking on the moon (July, '69).
The Lyrid meteor shower, which occurs every April, is being drowned out by moonlight this year. It started a couple days ago & peaks before the first light of Tuesday's sunrise. Scientists recommend you lay on your back with your feet to the east, look straight up & give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness, but to only expect about 10-20 meteors/hour. However, the Lyrids frequently leave glowing dust trails behind them as they streak through the Earth's atmosphere, which can be seen for several seconds.
NASA says this is one of the oldest known meteor showers, having been observed for 2,700 years, with first recorded sighting by the Chinese in 687 BC.

The City will seek legal means to halt construction of the Mia Bungalows
The Director of Urban Development and Ecology, Nivardo Fernandez Martinez, said no permits have been issued by the City to allow bungalow construction on the beach of the Mia Hotel, and none will be issued. He said this municipal administration has opposed the construction of these bungalows since its previous term, and remains firm.
"We are going to seek legal recourse to prevent this construction from taking place," he said.
. He explained that his office knew when the lumber arrived and conducted an inspection, giving the hotel written notice to present documentation within 48 hours. He said the work is under suspension, and there will be sanctions if it continues.
It was exactly one year ago that the Mia Hotel made its previous attempt to carry out this construction, and Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis (then in his first term) rejected the controversial project. LINK

Isla Mujeres Al Dia

Five fishermen who had been reported as lost were found by a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico, who assisted them. They were all in good health and had been stranded by a broken engine. They were from the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres (on the mainland) and notice that they were lost went out around 1pm yesterday (Thursday).
Staff with Civil Protection interviewed their relatives to obtain information and coordinated this with the Harbor Master and Navy for a search and rescue effort. They took the relatives to the Harbor Master in Puerto Juarez who has jurisdiction in this case.
The Navy activated search and rescue protocols with a boat and a helicopter. (The notice that they had been found was posted by Isla Mujeres al Dia shortly after the notice that they were lost, both around 9p last night.)

Authorities, entrepreneurs, and community and business leaders of Isla Mujeres explain that Playa Norte and Playa Centro of Isla Mujeres are totally suitable for recreation, with analysis of ecoli results at 89 ore 100ml and 94 oer 100ml when tested between March 19 and 28 by COFEPRIS (Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Health Risks).  (The safety limit is 200).
They said that Playa NOrte is one of the top ten beaches in the world, according to Trip Advisor, and the Pueblo Magico of Isla Mujeres receives more than 20,000 visitors a day during high season, in addition to maintaining occupancy rates around 85 percent. Playa Norte and Playa Centro have White Flag and Blue Flag designations, receptively, which means they meet the criteria for these certifications.

Powerful Cold Front #52 expected Friday afternoon

Arribará potente frente frío 52 este viernes

April 18 Winds and gusts are expected to reach 44-50 km/hr around 4pm on Friday, and to begin to lose strength on Saturday around 5pm, so the climate should be good for nautical activities on Sunday.
On Thursday, the south-southeastern winds reached 55 km/hr, which affected the small lanchas in Puerto Juarez who offer tours, but the catamarans, trimarans, and yachts were able to visit and anchor off North Beach.
Many tourists arrived on the ferries on Thursday, and there were extra departures to meet the demand. There weren't as many tourists as expected, due to the strong winds. Some restaurateurs complained that their business is affected by the many visitors who arrive with full coolers. The agencies renting golf carts, scooters, and bicycles are renting nearly all their inventory during this holiday season.

Mayor: No bungalows

Bungalós no van: alcalde

In has been one year since the municipal government stopped the construction of 23 bungalows by the island of El Yunque by the hotel Mia, and the executives of that hotel are trying to begin the project again. Once again, Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis has announced that no construction permits will be granted.
On Wednesday, inspectors went to the bridge-dock to the Mia Hotel to inspect the activity, after it had been reported that a truck full of lumber had arrived, allegedly for construction of the bungalows, which had occurred in April 2017 (sic? They made an attempt in April, 2018.), when they had to remove the lumber they had unloaded onto the beach.
Mayor Carrillo visited the site and said that the hotel has tried to start construction of bungalows since 2016 in the shallow water near the hotel, and they claimed they had all the federal permits, which is a position they are maintaining again.
The Mayor showed the only authorization was a construction permit from the 2013-2016 administration of Agapito Magana issued on Sept. 20, 2016 during the last ten days of his administration. When Mayor Juan Carrillo took office in his first term, he revoked the permit on October 25, 2016.
"I want to tell all the islanders that we are going to start a legal battle so that these bungalows are not built in this recreational area for hundreds of tourists," he said.
Executives of the Mia hotel were given notice to present documents within 48 hours, according to the regulations, and to stop any work meanwhile.
On April 18, 2018, Mia tried to reactivate the plan, bringing materials to the beach, but the municipal authority acted immediately to prevent it, and there was controversy and opposition among the community and entrepreneurs. Now with this new attempt, there will be a fight in the courts by the municipal government to try and cancel the project permanently.

Pavement needs attention at South Point

Urge renovar pavimento de Punta Sur

There are several potholes along about 300 meters of pavement, and it is recommended that the City provide maintenance to prevent potential accidents. It is noted that many of the more than 800 rented golf carts visit the site, and taxi drivers also want the government to attend to the problem.

Rescue of two missing fishermen who were lost while diving

Rescatan a pescadores extraviados

See the previous edition. The two young fishermen had been in the missing and in the water for over 13 hours on Tuesday when they were found 62 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres. The alert went out on Tuesday afternoon and a military helicopter assisted the boats in the search and rescue effort, which ended successfully much to the relief of their families, friends, and coworkers. They had been diving from the 26 foot long boat "Alain" when they went missing, and the cooperative was quickly informed, shortly before noon.
They were found in good health by the boat "Omar" who spotted their flashlight in the vast sea, after they had been in the water for more than 13 hours. It took the captain of the "Omar", Juan Badillo, over three hours to bring them back to Isla Mujeres. Red Cross workers attended to them on the Social Justicia cooperative dock, and Anjel Torres Trujillo was taken to the hospital. Alvaro Trejo Velazquez left with his family.

Renovating the geotube breakwater 'whales' on North Beach

Refuerzan espigones en Playa Norte

Four four-meter-long geotubes that are more than one meter in diameter were used to replace a 16 meter wooden jetty. This was done by Federal Zone concessionaires who say the high strength plastic tubes filled with sand last longer than wood.
