Here is the history in English LINK In this interview with Enrique Lima Zuno, president of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club, he says that in 1964, officials with the Yacht Club traveled to Cuba to meet Fidel Castro and "Che" Guevara, and were able to get the full support of the Cuban government in case some sailboat in the regattas needed help in the territorial waters of Cuba. He said, "Upon hearing the news, the managers of the Federation of the Yacht Clubs of the Gulf of Mexico in the United States promoted our event in the following years."

May 12 Thousands of visitors enjoyed the beaches of Isla Mujeres on Saturday, with a sunny morning and a cloudy afternoon, and a 'saldo blanco' (no incidents) was reported at the end of the day. Many boats of all sizes arrived by 10am, bringing tourists from the Cancun Hotel Zone, Puerto Juarez, and Punta Sam. Some went directly to the beach, while many others opted to rent one of the 820 golf carts.About 80% were rented by the end of the day. Other visitors were enjoying snorkeling in the rich National Marine Park, on tours which often also included lunch.
The reporter observed that Playa Centro was full, with many umbrellas rented and national tourists were predominately enjoying this area, and North Beach had been full since noon, as well. Dozens of yachts, who brought tourists, were anchored at the edge of the swimming area, by the buoy line.
At Punta Sur, there were visitors since 11am, who from near or far had heard of the shrine to the goddess Ixchel and the sculpture park. They enjoyed the tourist overlooks with views from 15 meters above the Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Channel, and the Bay, with the Cancun Hotel Zone in the distance.
Tourists were visiting other points of interest such as Garrafón, Mundaca, Tortugranja, Malecón Caribe and the historical downtown area. A similar level of activity is expected on Sunday. Some businesses said they also noticed an effect from the 30th edition of the Al Sol Regatta, with many friends and family members of the sailboat crews visiting.

May 12 There could be rain on Sunday and into the early hours on Monday. (Note, it is 1:30p and the sun has been shining all day, so far. The sea is calm and it is there are a few clouds in the sky. It rained yesterday, starting in the late afternoon.)

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Turtles begin mating and nesting in May. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.

(Happy hour schedules will be posted each day by 11am at the Race Headquarters. This is the 50th edition, they come annually from St Petersburg, Florida.)
