Oct.5  Residents are advised to removed objects that could become projectiles in strong winds, especially from their roofs, and to avoid putting trash out in the streets where it could clog the storm drains. It is recommended to cover wells and secure and protect water tanks and gas tanks, and to have wood to secure the windows and doors. Construction materials and debris should be removed. Businesses are expected to close early on Friday, and to secure their goods, but there is no panic among them. The stores have adequate food supplies to meet the needs of the island. Water companies report they have adequate supplies to meet demands also, including Cristal, Aguavera, Puritronic, and others.

Oct. 5  The transportation of passengers to Puerto Juárez and Punta Sam will be suspended from 7:00pm  on Friday, depending on the evolution of tropical storm "Nate" on Caribbean waters, reported the Harbor Master.
Minor navigation throughout the day on the coast of Isla Mujeres will also be restricted to prevent accidents during this storm. Harbor Master Ismael Gonzalez Gil recommended boat owners take the necessary precautions.
About 300 boats under 40 feet in length will seek shelter on the island, mainly in the Makax Lagoon and protected sites. Small boats are also expected to protect themselves in marinas at the lagoon..
Those who are at the Contoy Island National Park fishing camp will be asked to return to the island to take refuge and not be exposed to an unnecessary danger.         The lagoons of the Salina Grande and Salina Chica have no risk of overflowing due to the good level they maintain. The two pumps are in good condition and can be started if necessary.              On the other hand, Civil Protection reported that the hurricane shelters are in ready for families that wish to move there, mainly of the irregular colonia of La Guadalupana. Also the installation of the Fifth Naval Region is available and several properties that meet the standard of safety for families, however, in the light of experience, there are no more than 100 families who take refuge in the island in case of hurricane , almost always family and friends accommodate the people at home.

Tuesday, Nov. 1 All Saint's Day   Dia de los Muertos

Wednesday, Nov. 2  All Soul's Day   Dia de los Muertos

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used. The schools usually have altar contests & displays, there's usually one in the Town Hall, and last year there was a display of altars representing different of Mexico at the Casa de la Cultura.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico.

There is usually a silent procession with residents dressed in white, black, and traditional clothing, and many wear Catrina makeup. In addition to keeping these traditions alive, Halloween is celebrated enthusiastically on Hidalgo. Bring lots of little items & be prepared to be mobbed by cute kids and to enjoy the various impressive, clever homemade costumes.
