The Naval command received a call from the Central Naval Command Center that the ship "Northern Explorer" had spotted a balsero type boat adrift with a considerable number of people aboard, and was attempting to assist them. The Cubans were taken aboard the boat "Tampico Star 9" and then onto a Naval patrol boat, based in Isla Mujeres.
There were 12 Cuban nationals, eight men and four women, who were taken aboard the Naval boat 142 nautical miles (263 km) north of Puerto Progreso. They were given medical exams and found to be in stable health, with mild dehydration. They were taken to the Port of Progreso, where they were turned over to the Immigration officials for processing according to the law. This information was provided in a statement by the Secretary of the Navy which notes that these actions are done as part of the Naval responsibility to safeguard lives at sea.

According to the manager of the Port Authority in Isla Mujeres, Jazmin Perez Gaytan, the largest number of tourists daily, so far in this summer vacation season, has been a little over 17,000, but it is expected that this number will be exceeded this weekend, and may reach up to 20,000 in a single day. Security has been increased to prevent any boating accidents, and it is noted that nearly all the golf carts are rented out before noon.
While this large influx of visitors brings benefits to the community, there are also problems such as the increased amount of trash and difficulties collecting it and transporting it to the mainland. Another service that is affected is the tap water supply, which is in high demand at the hotels.

Hundreds of whale sharks congregate
Cientos de tiburones ballena pululan.. [+] Ver masPhotos & full article at this link
July 23  An official has estimated that there are over 400 whale sharks in various parts of the 633,398 hectares of water north of Quintana Roo where they congregate, especially within the section known as Aguas Azules. They migrate here annually to feed in this transition zone between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. They appear regularly in July and August, and this year they were lacking in June.
Theoretically, 160 boats visit the area daily, according to the capacity that is authorized, but it is reported that there have been more than 300 permits issued by the DGVS, allowing six tourists per boat, according the the Management Plan adopted in 2016, who may depart daily, which isn't in compliance with that rule.
There is also the problem of unauthorized boats without permits. In 2004 the boat "Annet" was detained by PROFEPA for bringing tourists to the whale shark area without a permit. There are no known statistics  available from the local SEMARNAT office about the number or amount of sanctions.
It was said yesterday that on Saturday, PROFEPA personnel would be departing from Punta Sam for the whale shark area to inspect and sanction any unlicensed boats, many of which depart from Cancun. It has been said that the agency lacks sufficient budget to carry out their daily work.

More erosion

Due to erosion of the cliffs along the coastal area overlooking the Caribbean Sea, a few days ago a small section by the Caribbean malecon walkway fell. This is no erosion prevention plan in place, and there are concerns about possible effects of the next hurricane.
During the powerful hurricane Gilberto in 1988, a section of the perimeter road was changed, and later with Wilma in 2005 those cliffs were weakened, which rise as high as 12 meters above the sea. There is erosion occurring in two areas, along the 4 kilometers of the eastern side of the island; at the southern part and and the central part of the island. There are concerns that another strong hurricane could cause parts of Punta Sur and of that area to disappear.

Large numbers of visitors at maritime recreational areas

Large numbers of tourists are visiting the maritime recreational sites like MUSA, Manchones, and the Cross in the Bay, causing concerns that maximum capacity limits should be imposed to prevent accidents. Boats of all types, including catamarans, trimarans, and mono-hulls, arrive in the area between 10am and 4pm, full of tourists.
