This official twinning agreement will open the doors for more tourism and support mutual cooperation and assistance. The Mayor of Helena, James E. Smith, agreed with the mayor of Isla Mujeres that hand in hand the two towns can grow in various areas: cultural, economic development, tourism promotion, technical and environmental assistance, among others.
First National Health Week
The First National Health Week began on Monday in Isla Mujeres to promote disease prevention among the community, with the motto "Like your love, vaccinations protect them" (“mientras tú los quieres, las vacunas los protegen”). With representatives of the Health Care community and municipal authorities in attendance, the first vaccinations were given to students at the preschool-kindergarten "Enriqueta Camarillo and Roa".
The municipal Director of Health, Tharin Sadat Casique, said they plan to carry out more than 10,000 actions during this week in every corner of the municipality. They will be administering anti-polio Sabin vaccines, distributing envelopes of electrolyte powders to mothers and guardians of children under five years of age, and providing supplements of vitamins, minerals, and folic acid.
At the event, the Mayor was represented by the municipal Secretary General, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, and the other officials in attendance included: Dr. Pedro Zapata, director of the Isla Mujeres Community Hospital; Cesar Poot Pérez, director of Economic Development; Dr. Antonio Salas, director del IMSS (Mexican Institute of Social Security); and Rocío Rodríguez, Director of Education; among others.

Hoteliers still awaiting faster internet service
Hoteleros esperan mejor servicio de Internet.. [+] Ver mas
In separate interviews, leaders of the business organizations CANACO and CANIRAC, Juan Carrillo Figueroa and Baltazar Maldonado, respectively, said that Telmex has not improved internet service.
There was a meeting earlier in February with hoteliers when Telmex company representatives said internet speeds would double or triple downtown on February 15th, with the implementation of an additional antenna. They said these improvements would be implemented for the rest of the island in March. They said the fiber optic project is still pending and had no projected date.
The hoteliers and restaurateurs say that many customers ask if they have WIFI coverage, but there is difficulty connecting and low speeds, and the entrepreneurs are unhappy with the bad service with its interruptions. In less than a month, the Easter holiday period will begin, which is expected to overload the network, if is not improved before then.
Preparing for Easter holiday season
Se alista la temporada de Semana Santa] Ver mas
Although the winter high season has not yet ended, some facilities have begun making improvements and doing maintenance in preparation for the Easter holiday season which begins in less than a month. Facilities are being put in spruced up for March 19 thru Monday March 28, when visitors will arrive, and this island is expected to be full to the point of 'bursting'.
The maintenance work includes replacing palapa thatch, replacing boards and timbers, fixing roofs, landscaping, updating electrics, painting, waterproofing, and roofing. At Playa Centro (Posada Beach) repairs are being made to the wooden dock of the Magana family, where the sands nearly 'buried' the dock. The buoys that protect the swimmers are still in good shape, and have been in place for three years.
Miguel Arronte teaches baseball clinic

Cuban baseball player Miguel Arronte Rodriguez, who lives in New York, taught a baseball clinic for over two hours at the El Pescador field. The event started at 3:30 pm, with more than 20 people in attendance, who were predominately young people, with parents and fans spectating.
He said it is important to learn the technical elements in an orderly manner, and to use proper methods and mechanics, and to involve everyone in these teaching techniques for the children including parents, coaches, and the children, beginning at an early age. He said mastery is achieved over time, taking many years.
Tuesday, the baseball player will fly from Cancun to Tijuana to teach another baseball clinic, and then he will travel to Puerto Rico. He is scheduled to return to Cancun and Isla Mujeres, according to those who invited him to return because they are interested in improving the quality of local players.
