Complaints persist about construction in beach areas

 En zona de playas

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 31 de mayo.-
Islanders are complaining on social networks about construction on the Posada del Mar beach, and in particular about construction now being done with concrete. There have been ongoing complaints about the construction of palapas and proliferation of beach massage businesses in the Federal Zone. Islanders say they can no longer move freely down the beach without tripping over rows of lounge chairs and umbrellas, and that there are palapas of masseurs  blocking the views, with their businesses on the public beaches of Isla Mujeres. They say the director of the Federal Zone (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre), Carmen Náhuatl Lara, should intervene and they accuse her of being in cahoots with the builders. This area has been in the process of obtaining Blue Flag certification.

Damaging the work of tourism promotion

 Empleados de establecimientos

Lanrry PARRA
At 11:30 Friday night, a Cancun family was at La Terraza, and the woman asked a waiter to connect her phone to charge it. He replied, "Connect it here, I'll take care of it." But a few minutes later, when she returned for her phone to take pictures, to her great surprise it was gone. When she asked the waiter for the phone,  éste le dijo quién había tomado el equipo, dando santo y señas del ladrón, and no one assisted the tourists. There was a debit card in the phone case, and it was used for more than 20 small purchases in a shop on Rueda Medina, for a total of over 4000 pesos (~$275dlls).
The police came, but the tourists did not get their cell phone back, and were required to pay their bill. The business has cameras to identify thieves, so it is unknown why the manager or owner did not assist the tourists, and it is noted that this type of theft has a negative effect on this tourist destination.

"Weak points" in the event of a hurricane

On Monday, at 1pm at the Convention Center, Gov. Roberto Borge Angulo will preside over the opening of the First Ordinary Session of the State Council of Civil Protection and the Installation of the municipal Committee for Special Operations in Hurricanes. (Comité Operativo Especializado en Fenómenos Hidrometrológicos). They will be in charge of measures to be taken during the six month long Atlantic Hurricane season, which has begun with Tropical Storm Ana.(Link to Ana info)
According to organizations specializing in hurricanes, they are predicting a half dozen hurricanes in the Caribbean and the names will be, after Ana, Bill, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas and Odette.
Meanwhile Isla Mujeres has several weaknesses including the wall that protects downtown because the quality of the work is allegedly deficient. It is noted that on Sunday, a resident advised that the wall near colonia Salina Chica be extended, and protection provided for the homes built in recent years near Colegio Bachilleres, and that it is necessary to reinforce the section near the airport and the Aguakan pump.

NOAA's predictions for the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season LINK
 Excerpt:
NOAA is predicting that along the Atlantic, there will be a 70 percent likelihood of six to 11 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which between three and six could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher). At most, two of those are expected to become major hurricanes, defined as Category 3, 4 or 5, characterized by winds of 111 mph or higher.

Permits for only 160 boats
Permiso sólo a 160 embarcaciones. [+] Ver mas

The Wildlife Department (DGVS) did not authorize any special permits for private boats for tours in the Whale Shark Biosphere, because its capacity is reached with the 160 permits for the licensees, said Maria del Carmen Garcia Rival. This area is also called "Aguas Verdes" (Green Waters). She said, "We are prepared for tomorrow (Sunday) and the start of the season in the Reserve, and we have a list of 160 boats of registered service providers." She said the DGVS is issuing no permits for private boats, "Because they would have to take the same training as the captains and guides, and the capacity is full, therefore we cannot have activity by private boats."
Regarding monitoring and surveillance of the more than 130 hectares of the Biosphere, this will be coordinated between the following agencies: SCT (Department of Communication & Transport), SEMAR (Navy), PROFEPA (Federal Environmental Protection Agency), and APIQRoo (Port Authority of Quintana Roo). SEMAR gives assistance with their ships making regular tours throughout the months of June, July, and August, and until September 17th when the season ends, according to the current Management Plan.
Continuous satellite tracking devices will not be available, which had been proposed to track the location of each boat. This technology is used on the sailboats that compete in regattas between the US and Isla Mujeres, to ensure the safety of their crews.
Admission to the Whale Shark Biosphere, (Aguas Verdes), begins Monday, June 1st. Together with the Aguas Azules area, they represent a total of 379,000 hectares, which stretches from the southern part of Isla Mujeres to the north at Holbox. As was reported recently, the season at Aguas Azules began last week with a small number of whale sharks. (Their numbers have increased since then. Yesterday it was reported on Facebook that  ~100 whale sharks were seen.)

Rudeness by Aguakan empties restaurant
Indolencia de Aguakan vacía restaurante [+] Ver mas
An Aguakan truck was on Hidalgo, pumping out the sewage from the tank of Plaza Isla Mujeres on Sunday, causing a foul odor affecting a dozen foreigners dining a Roster restaurant, a short distance away. Diners left and relocated, since the business has an enclosed section.
The strong smell affected all of those who were downwind, including housewives, vendors of nautical services, and retailers, who expressed negative opinions and who said Aguakan should schedule this work in the wee hours (la madrugada), when there is little activity in the area. Visitor Juan Peralta said, "For the health and image of Isla Mujeres, they should consider this suggestion."
It is also noted that there are areas where Aguakan has not repaved the road properly after doing work on their lines; for example, the road to Garrafon from colonia Caridad del Cobre to Cañotal, and the resultant potholes and uneveness can cause bicycles and scooters to lose control.
