A civic event with the theme "Protecting Us All" was held this morning in honor of the National Day of Civil Protection and National Week of Civil Protection, recognizing the work of lifeguards, firefighters, police, paramedics, volunteers, and others. The goal is to raise awareness about working together and developing strategies between the government and the community to follow in case of emergencies. The Director of Civil Protection and Firefighting organized training for immediate response and preparedness that is aimed primarily at city departments and companies to offer to their staff. A simulation is planned at the Town Hall to train workers and to emphasize the importance of an attitude of prevention and preparedness. He stressed that it important to know the immediate actions, steps, and procedures that must be followed in a contingency. ('Contingency' means any emergency, and it is common in the local news to refer to big storms or hurricanes as weather contingencies, or just as contingencies.)

During Civil Protection Week, simulations will be held at various public and private buildings, to implement the actions taken by each of the Civil Protection brigades at each property and to comply with the Regulations of the Municipal System of Civil Protection in the face of such an eventuality.
Regarding history, on August 12, 1949 Civil Protection was begun. In 2001 the Federal Government established National Day of Civil Protection in memory of the tragic earthquake of 1985 in which hundreds of lives were lost. (in Mexico City).
During the civil ceremony, the Mexican flag flew at half mast for a period of national mourning. The event was led by the municipal Secretary General, Cesar Poot Perez, and attended by the Harbor Master, Miguel Gil, Mauro Humberto Rodríguez Velázquez, director of Civil Protectio; Joaquín Poot Acosta, Director of Public Security and Traffic (the police chief) and the members of the City Council: Miriam Trejo León and Bartolomé Pech Matú.

The DIF opened a collection center at the Town Hall to help the victims of hurricane Odile.
The City of Isla Mujeres opened a collection center by the Town Hall and the other collection center is at the offices of the DIF (in la Gloria). On Monday the items will be taken to the continental zone.

Two booths have been set up, one by the Palacio Municipal & the other at the DIF offices in La Gloria, open from 9a to 4p. Our brothers of Baja, California Sur, are in need. Let's help them.

Other notices say...They will be taking the items over to the mainland Monday & that this is a statewide effort that began on Friday morn.

0 20 de septiembre de 2014There are members of the business community who hope that the opening of the new ferry terminal will present a new image of Isla Mujeres and eliminate the problems with the commisionista hawkers, who they say present a bad image by harassing visitors. The unnamed entrepreneurs are quoted as saying they understand this will cause some discomfort, but they believe it will bring significant benefits to Isla Mujeres. They also say it is essential for the City to continue to eradicate the street vendors from the streets.

0 20 de septiembre de 2014The balsero boat that allegedly brought ~8 undocumented Cubans to Isla Mujeres two weeks ago has been moved from North Beach, but now the fishermen of the Posada del Mar beach are complaining about its relocation.They are concerned that the boat could remain in this location for months because the engine that was on board has been removed and now no junkyard is likely to be interested in the rest of the vessel. The fishermen want the boat removed from the Posada Beach because there are still traces of fuel inside that could pollute the sands.

Two more fishermen have suffered decompression and are number 40 & 41 to be treated at the hyperbaric chamber. The first was José Antonio Torres Uscanga, 52, of the cooperative Patria y Progreso who suffered paralysis in his right arm and minutes later in most of his body. The other was Manuel López Cauich, 53, of the cooperative Por Social Justicia, who was diving at a depth of 70 feet. After he finished working he began to feel badly, and realizing what was happening, he went to the hyperbaric chamber and received treatment.
The doctor in charge of the chamber said statistics have soared this lobster fishing season, with almost twice as many cases of decompression among the lobster fishermen. (The season began July 1st and is over March 1st.)
