School Supplies Donation Program
With the participation of the islanders in the program "We are all useful"/ "Todos somos útiles" children of families with limited income in the municipality will have school supplies when school resumes. Residents are annoyed about poor coordination of road repairs LINK VIDEO

There could be a delay in the completion of the road repair work that began about a month ago, because the material didn't arrive early Wednesday morning, as expected, after a crew had removed a section of asphalt from prolongacion Rueda Medina near the beer business (cervecera) on Tuesday night. This caused traffic chaos, especially among the golf carts, although traffic was able to proceed in both directions.
The work is being done by MD Constructions, whose workers didn't know why the materials hadn't arrived from Cancun as expected. These workers who apply the material were not the same ones who removed the old asphalt the night before, and they didn't know the whereabouts of the engineer in charge.
There have been some complaints from residents that this work is taking place during the summer high season. The new director of public works, Ángeles López, was unable to supply statistics regarding the amount of money invested, square footage of the repairs, or projected completion date. Street repair program is 90% complete
The work is being carried out in a timely manner and should be completed on the stipulated date(Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, July 18, 2018)
The Director of the Department of Public Works, Ángeles López Barrientos, reports that the Street and Pot Hole Repair Program in Isla Mujeres is 90 percent complete and it is expected to be finished on July 27 as scheduled.
The patching work is 90 percent complete, and began on June 6th. It has gone on continuously since then, and a request has been made to residents asking for their understanding about the inconvenience caused by the repairs.
Mr. Lopez explained that in this program consists of the identification of the potholes, cutting and removal of the road surface, compaction of the earthen base, and supply and placement of an asphalt mix of 3 to 5 centimeters thick, at a cost of 1.5 million pesos in federal funds from the Municipal Strengthening Fund (FORTAMUN).
In total, 3,000 square meters of streets are being repaired on the island, in Rancho Viejo and Punta Sam. On the island, patching work is taking place in the colonias of La Gloria, Ampliación La Gloria, and Caridad del Cobre, as well as along prolongacion Rueda Medina Avenue, Jesús Martínez Ross Avenue, and the Caribbean Coastal (perimetral) road.

The City is collecting school supplies for students of families with limited income for the campaign “Todos somos útiles”
The packages of school supplies will be delivered at the start of the school year to students in the Continental Zone, Francisco May and the Agricultural Zone (on the mainland part of the municipality). Donations are being accepted until August 10th, Monday thru Friday, 9a-4p at the offices of the Municipal DIF and from 11a-4p at the Town Hall.
Those who wish to contribute can donate notebooks, colored pencils, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, glue, scissors, and other items.

Ultramar has preferential contract with Port Authority

The General Director of APIQRoo, the state port authority, has declined to try to cancel the ten-year contract with Ultramar that was made in 2011, permitting them to pay a fee of 50 centavos per tourist in low season and 25 centavos in high season, rather than the usual fee of 5 pesos.
It is estimated that this agreement has caused a loss of about 100 million pesos to date, which could have been used for maintenance. In 2017, there were 5 million tourist mobilizations (each tourist is 'mobilized' twice, arriving and departing), with Ultramar providing 90 percent of this service. It is estimated that the other ferry companies may provide 20 percent of the passenger service in 2018.
There are some who say the Port Authority should provide better maintenance for the agency's pier and for their 200 meter-long seawall, which some say should be 50 centimeters taller to provide better protection in the event of a hurricane.

Regarding the problem of erosion of North Beach, in 2017, the municipal Department of Urban Development had said that the federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) was about to approve the request to provide federal resources to pay for the replacement of at least six giant geotubes known popularly as "whales", which had previously provided protection. However, now municipal sources have reported that this will be delayed until the next state administration.
The biggest erosion problem is at the west end of North Beach, where it meets Playa Centro. There have been suggestions that sand should be moved there from Playa Centro which has expanded in the past two years, causing the buoy line to be much closer to the beach, and sand has added to the navigation channel just beyond the buoys.

Over 100 turtle nests are being protected

"Nearly" (sic More than) 100 turtle nests have been collected and protected at the Tortugranja as part of the sea turtle conservation program during this season, which will be complete in October, when the number of nests could triple. They are the species hawksbill, loggerhead, and green.
The Tortugranja is popular with tourists who visit 365 days a year, and has achieved worldwide recognition for its conservation efforts.
NOTE: On July 13th it was reported that the Tortugranja was protecting 59 Loggerhead nests with 6819 eggs, 54 Green nests with 6612 eggs, and 7 Hawksbills nests with 975 eggs. Nesting season began in May and continues thru October.
Free Medical Care
There is a mobile medical unit providing free care to islanders, at various locations around the isle from July 16 to July 19th. Wednesday it was at the IEEA facility and Thursday it will be at the Casa de la Cultura, providing services that include glucose testing, general consultations, screening for glucoma, nutritional counseling, pulmonary function testing, and mammograms, from 9am to 5pm.
