Closure seals placed to stop fencing of beach by Privilege Aluxes hotel LINK
July 20 This morning the municipal Department of Urban Development, in coordination with the ZOFEMAT (Federal Zone agency) placed closure seals on a fence that was constructed by Privilege Aluxes hotel in the beach area. The closure was carried out very early, with the intention of avoiding privatization of the beach.
Kerem Pinto Aguilar, director of ZOFEMAT, said, "Once the installation of the fence was detected, we proceeded accordingly, since the Law says that concessioned areas can not be fenced in and thereby prohibit the free passage of people. The official explained that the closure seals were placed by the Department of Urban Development, since there are no permits for the fence. They have been sited to present construction permits, as well as for delimitation (fencing) of the Federal Zone.
According to neighbors, the work started very early and appeared to have the intention of extending the construction until the beach was closed, a situation that was prevented thanks to the placement of the closure seals.

The Director of the Community Hospital of Isla Mujeres Ángel García Albarrán said that 80 percent of emergency care received in the hospital is caused by accidents involving motorcyclists and people in golf carts. He said the other 20 percent are being treated for illnesses and general care. He said an average of 45 accident patients are treated monthly, mostly from skidding (derrapes) or golf cart collisions.
In June, they treated 46 cases of road accidents, which has been the usual number throughout this year, mostly motorcycle accidents and accidents in golf carts. He urged drivers to use accident prevention, since the vast majority are caused by imprudence. He said preventative measures are even more important in July, when the number of visitors increases.
Regarding motorcycle helmets, he said even if they aren't certified, they are functional, and their use has helped avoid cases of fatal accidents. He reiterated his emphasis on prevention, moderation of speed, to moderate the way of driving and to moderate the state in which carts and scooters are driven.
He said that for prevention, some signs should be installed about driving carefully, especially at golf cart agencies since those vehicles are very unstable.

"Isla Blanca" ferry resumes operations, but isn't "100%"

The "Isla Blanca" ferry has resumed vehicle and passenger service between the island and Punta Sam with a new schedule of six round trips daily, except Sunday when there are four. Yesterday, the ferry "Sergio Gracia Aguilar" entered maintenance, in compliance with the safety measures required by the maritime authorities. (And because it broke down on Thursday.)
The "Isla Blanca" is not yet "at 100 percent", and 80% of the list of the requirements from the authorities having been met.. The other requirements must be complied with in upcoming weeks, while the "Sergio Gracia" is receiving attention for the mechanical failure it experienced at noon on Thursday in Punta Sam, which resulted in authorization being given for the return to service of the "Isla Blanca" ferry, which was previously prohibited for safety reasons.
When the Department of the Navy conducted an inspection (during the Easter holidays) they found there were many issues that needed attention, such as the lack of an anchor, the bilge system, needing new life jackets, and the crew not knowing how to use the radio communication system, among others.
From Monday to Saturday, the departures from Isla Mujeres will be: 5a. 8a. 11a. 2p, 5:30p and 8:30p with the returns from Punta Sam at: 6:30a, 9:30a, 12:30p, 3:30p, 7p and 9:30p. On Sunday, the departures from Isla are at 8a, 11a, 2p and 7p and the returns are at 9:30a, 12:30p, 3:30p and 8:30p.

The thousands of tourists who arrive daily in this summer season are suffering from the high temperatures and some have been victims of heat stress in public spaces and on the beaches, according to Red Cross personnel and security forces.
The lifeguards have been attending to eight to 10 cases daily, in addition to the Naval first aid module that is installed on the beach. Most of those affected are children and the elderly, which included an 86 year old man who collapsed just before entering Playa Centro. His right clavicle was fractured when he fell to the pavement, and he was taken to a hospital in Cancun for immediate hospitalization.
Thousands of vacationers arrived on the boats of the three ferry companies, to visit the attractions of Isla Mujeres, and no incidents were reported among them. Visitors from Punta Sam began arriving, after service resumed yesterday (Thursday). The number of arrivals could reach 15,000 daily, according to Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, Director of the Municipal Tourism Department.
Mr. Rodriguez said that there has been no security problems in the beach area, with no reports of cases of theft or mistreatment of customers. Regarding the incidence of traffic accidents by golf carts, it is low; meanwhile, a case was resolved in which a vehicle of this type jammed its accelerator and hit two motorcycles parked on the Rueda Medina. The damages were minor and those involved agreed to take responsibility.

Personnel with company from Monterrey who are renovating the soccer field in colonia Salina Chica said the removal of the artificial turf should be completed on Tuesday. The previous turf lasted nearly a decade. Athletes are impatient for the work to be completed, since there is no other soccer field to use as an alternative.
The field is the venue for national tournaments of 4th and 5th divisions, as well as regional events. For the children's teams the property is divided in two.

Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
