The Mayor posted that the Isla Mujeres municipal Department of Civil Protection reports that no damage has been reported throughout the municipality due to the earthquake that originated off the coast of Honduras. It is recommended that residents only pay attention to official information.

The State Coordinator of Civil Protection reports that there has been no damage in Quintana Roo after the earthquake was registered moments before (off the coast of Honduras).  Residents are advised to stay informed through official sources.

The State Coordinator of Civil Protection (COEPROC), Adrián Martínez Ortega, made an announcement in regard to the Tsunami Warning issued by the Secretary of the Navy, derived from the 7.6-degree earthquake that occurred on Tuesday night off the coast of Honduras, that it is NOT of destructive nature, so it does NOT represent a danger for residents of Quintana Roo, since the waves that formed are from 1 to 3 feet high, (~40 centimeters).

Today we recognized the work and value of all the officers of the Department of Public Safety and Municipal Traffic, at a breakfast in honor of Police Day. Thank you for making Isla Mujeres a safe municipality for families. LINK  VIDEO
As part of the actions that are being implemented to improve the working conditions of the officers of the Department of Public Safety and Municipal Transit, the Municipality of Isla Mujeres announced 14.5% salary increase for the personnel of this department, during the commemoration of Police Day.
During this event, which was chaired by municipal authorities,  the most outstanding police officers were recognized for their work throughout the year, and an incentive was announced for all Municipal Police workers.
The General Director of Public Safety and Municipal Transit, Jaime Ongay Ortíz, presented an incentive and the "Police of the Year 2018" awards to the outstanding officers, in recognition of their work: Edgar Domínguez Ortíz, Maribel Campechano Javier and Diana Cajija Moreno, from Municipal Traffic; and Ana Patricia Pech Torres and Raúl Alfonso Sánchez López, from the Crime Prevention unit; and José de la Cruz Ramón Zampayo, Yessica Ek Álvarez, Gabino Pérez Martínez and Wilbert Méndez Arcos, of the Municipal Department of Public Safety.
Police chief Jaime Ongay Ortiz said that the City of Isla Mujeres works to provide police officers with the necessary tools such as vehicles, equipment and training programs so they can continue to perform their work safely.
He said, "The current government continues working so that we can continue providing security for the islanders. When we started with a staff of 84 officers and 3 vehicles; and today we have 236 officiers and 20 vehicles, including patrols vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles. Let's continue making Isla Mujeres a safe destination for all."
With these actions, the municipal government confirms its commitment to maintain a strong police force, to strengthen the bonds of trust with families, and to continue providing certainty and security to each of the visitors and to the islanders.

Old hospital in a state of abandonment
Antiguo hospital en el abandono.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The main building of the former hospital remains closed, although some islanders say that hospital provided better service than the current one. There is access at the back in the area of the Hyperbaric Chamber, and some residents complain that young people, both residents and foreigners, are using the area to smoke marijuana. Residents also complain that although there are bathrooms nearby, some men use the area to urinate.
No one knows what will happen to the facilities. There were rumors in March 2016 that the recently extradited former governor Roberto Borge wanted the state Congress to change its status from being publicly owned to the private domain in order to build a cruise ship dock, arguing that due to its deteriorated state, it would not be profitable to repair or maintain it.

Port open for all boats with caution advised

The Harbor Master said he expects the port to remain open for general navigation until Friday afternoon or evening when winds from the northwest are expected at 25 to 35 km/hour with gusts up to 45 km/hr, which would close the port for small boats, probably Friday night or Saturday morning.

Apparent heart attack after snorkeling
Su corazón no aguantó el snorkel  .. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
A foreign tourist died after enjoying a snorkeling tour at El Farito with his family, after apparently suffering a heart attack. Although the boat returned immediately to land and the Civil Protection lifeguards provided first aid to the victim until the arrival of the ambulance, neither they nor the paramedics could help him because he had no vital signs.
The unfortunate man, Arnold. A., 53, was originally from Israel, and had been on a snorkeling tour aboard the boat "Pez Volador" (Flying Fish), with his family. According to members of the crew and other tourists on the tour, after they had snorkeled at the reefs of El Farito, he left the water to rest and began to feel badly, complaining of discomfort and tingling in the area of his heart.
The captain of the boat immediately headed for Isla Mujeres, while requesting an ambulance, and he took the boat directly to one of the docks of the Lima family, where the crew and tourists unfortunately witnessed the death of  the tourist, who did not regain consciousness. The Civil Protection lifeguards from Playa Centro immediately gave him CPR, and the Red Cross ambulance arrived a half hour later, but the tourist lacked vital signs, and despite all the efforts to stabilize him, there were no positive results.
Officers with the municipal police arrived and confirmed the death of the tourist, cordoned off the area, and asked the curious bystanders to leave, allowing the family to stay with the body of their loved one.
Witnesses were concerned about the amount of time that it took for the ambulance to arrive, and questioned whether the tourist might have had a better chance of survival if it had been quicker. The paramedics explained that they were attending another call and had arrived as soon as they could.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day   This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.

Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.

Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi.  (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
