Civil Protection agency issues an ultimatum
Protección Civil da ultimátum .. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The Director of the Civil Protection agency, Ulises Berman, said a certificate of uninhabitability was issued to an old building on Monday, and the tenants have been given until Friday to vacate. If that deadline is exceeded, the Rios Fernandez family will be subject to sanctions. They are the owners of the two-story building, which is half a century old.
At 8:00pm on Friday evening, part of the ceiling detached in the apartment of Manuel Medina Ojeda, but fortunately he was not in the bed where the rubble fell. The Civil Protection agency inspected the building and spoke with the owners. Mr. Berman has offered his personal vehicle to help the tenants move their belongings, but said he did not know of another building that is available and safe for them to live in, but they have been given a week's notice to act.
The tenants say they have not found housing in the downtown area or the colonias, because the few rooms that are available are too expensive. Jordan Morales, who works at Rooster and lives in room number 7, confirmed that they had been given a week's notification to find new housing, and said that they hope to get lucky and find somewhere to live.

Gustavo Velázquez Garrido, 59, was one of the founders of what is now the
Colegio de Bachilleres of Isla Mujeres, and he will retire in two
weeks as Director of School Services, after 30 years of service. He said his job has meant a lot to him, that he was a good influence on the 1700 students who graduated during that time. He said he was happy to have contributed to the formation of many professionals who not participate in the development of companies and governmental activities. He named several active politicians and successful executives, both on the island and elsewhere.
His professional career and accomplishments are given, and anecdotes about his influence as an advisor and provider of vocational guidance. He saw a dozen directors come and go at the high school. He said he has already made arrangements to devote himself to personal matters during the first week of February. He plans to become involved in political activities, and could run for a position on the City Council in the upcoming election.
It is noted that he has three children, all professionals, and four grandchildren. They are descendants of founding families who moved to Isla Mujeres in 1950 (sic 1850) when the government of Yucatan decreed the town as the Pueblo of Dolores. Both the Velazquez and Garrido families were founders and their members have been tireless workers in the fishing industry, as well as the tourism industry for decades, who are known and respected in the community.

This information has already been translated about Forbes magazine, on Jan. 7th, announcing that many travelers prefer North Beach of Isla Mujeres after thousands of TripAdvisor users voted for it in the Travelers Choice Awards 2017. Por Esto reports that for over a decade, North Beach has remained on the lists of beaches that are preferred by travelers, but in the last five years it has been among the top 10 preferred by users, according to several sites that monitor the preferences of their customers. It has held the "White Flag" distinction for three years, which includes monitoring for cleanliness and water quality. It is noted that the staff of ZOFEMAT are out cleaning the beach every day, beginning at an early hour.
The General Director of Tourism, Jose Castillo Magana, said, "One of the main commitments of the municipal government is that all visitors are given an image of Isla Mujeres as a clean municipality, as this benefits the economy of island families who in one way or another have their main sustenance from tourism."
The White Flag is a hallmark that demonstrates compliance with Regulation 120, with the inclusion of measures to protect the environment on Mexican beaches, taking care of water quality, solid waste management, coastal infrastructure, biodiversity , safety and services, environmental education and noise pollution, guaranteeing tourists that visit a clean and well-maintained space. This beach, he added, has various services that visitors and islanders can access, such as the use of palapas, umbrellas and beds, lounges, emergency services, toilets, showers and parking, among others.
When talking about North Beach, he included Playa Centro, located opposite the lighthouse. This is also monitored to meet international quality standards, in order to maintain its Blue Flag designation.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.
Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.
Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
