To support the students of Isla Mujeres, the Student House was inaugurated in the city of Valladolid, Yucatan.

For the City of Isla Mujeres, one of the main commitments to the island's citizens is to support children and young people who want to continue their academic preparation, so on January 18th, the "Casa del Estudiante Isleño" was inaugurated, in Valladolid, Yucatán.
This action, carried out through the Municipal Youth Institute, benefits three students and more than 40 young people studying in this community, as it also functions as a meeting point and has a computer and internet center where they can carry out their school activities.
The general director of the municipal Youth Institute, Oswaldo González Barredo, said, "Those of us who work in the City of Isla Mujeres have the desire and, of course, the commitment to support all young people who emigrate to other places to continue their academic preparation, which is crystallized today through this project that provides them with an appropriate place to live while studying outside our beautiful island."
Mr. Gonzalez Barredo explained that in November there was an announcement made to those wishing to live in the "House of the Isleno Student", for which the essential requirements were to provide proof of residence, proof of income, proof of studies, to be a regular student and of legal age.
He said, "For all of us who are part of the municipal government. we are very proud that this administration supports the young islanders who have the desire to continue their studies, and they can be assured we will continue working to provide more benefits like this."
For the City of Isla Mujeres, the education of island children and youth is a priority, which is why we are committed to continue working so that no one is left without the opportunity to continue with their academic and professional development.
The house is located on 49th Street Num. 189-D by 34 and 36 of the neighborhood of San Juan, in Valladolid, Yucatán.

Committed to children and young athletes and that they should have specialized, trained professionals in the disciplines for their sports training, the City of Isla Mujeres, through the Sports Institute and Municipal Recreation, delivered certificates to baseball, soccer, handball and basketball coaches.
The general director of the Sports and Recreation Institute, Natanael Gallegos Salinas, explained that for this government it is essential that young athletes have trained coaches, for which certification was requested as an essential requirement.
Mr. Gallegos Salinas stressed that these certifications are endorsed by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) and the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sport (Conade).
With these actions, the municipal government confirms its commitment to support and strengthen sports in the municipality, providing certified coaches for the children and youths and providing the necessary equipment and tools for them to represent Isla Mujeres in the various sports disciplines.
Our roots and culture are now reflected in the streets of Isla Mujeres.

Personnel from the Naval base in Isla Mujeres (of the Fifth Naval Region) performed a medical evacuation near Holbox Island of a fishermen with an exposed fracture of his right tibia and fibula (lower leg). The fishing vessel "PESCAMEX 37" requested medical assistance for one of its crewmen. A Naval helicopter with personnel from the Maritime Search and Rescue unit (ENSAR) located the fishing vessel near Holbox Island, and carried out the evacuation and transportation to port. The patient received medical attention during his transfer and the helicopter arrived at the airport, where he was taken by the Red Cross ambulance, for admission to the the Cancun General Hospital for continuation of his medical care. With the actions, the Navy of Mexico, as the National Maritime Authority, reconfirms its commitment to the citizenry to safeguard human lives at sea.

The price of produce coming from the state of Yucatan remains stable, despite the high costs to transport it to the points of sale on the island, which include the two municipal markets and various open spaces. These foods are produced in the neighboring municipalities of Valladolid, Tizimín and Oxkutzcab, by the hands of women and men who transfer it in smaller quantities to be sold to the islanders.Everyday this produce goes into the traditional dishes for daily consumption, from when they arrive at the early hour of 6am.
They invest about 1500 pesos for the daily transfer of the cargo of each person, including passage in buses, taxis, and the ferry. They hope to sell their products for better prices, charging less than the supermarkets, and the local consumers and tourists prefer the natural products of this region, therefore sales are good this season.
"Maria" said she gets up at 3am in Valladolid (Yucatan time) to start her journey to Cancun, and from there to Puerto Juarez to cross by ferry at 5am. Around 6:30, everything is ready for the sale of her fruits and vegetables.
Another woman, who showed her prices, explained, "We try to maintain the same prices during recent months." She was selling a kilo of tomatoes for 40p, (that is 18.2 pesos/pound or about a dollar usd per pound.) but when they are abundant, the price goes down to 35. A squash or a white onion is 10p. Potatoes are 25p/kilo (that is 11.4 pesos/pound or ~63 cents usd/pound). The roatán bananas are three pieces for 10 pesos.They also bring tamales, masa, and a variety of spices, and take orders for the next day.
The cost of red meat from Yucatan has maintained its price from last year and increases aren't expected, except there are concerns it will rise when the cost increases for transferring cargo on the ferry from Punta Sam. It has been one year since the price of diesel rose 20 percent.
At the markets "Audomaro Magaña" and "Javier Rojo Gómez", the price of pork is 100 pesos per kilogram (that is 45.5 pesos/pound or about 2.53usd/lb) and beef is 160 kilograms per kilo. (that is 72.72 pesos/pound or about $4.04usd/lb.) When there is good production, this decreases about 20 pesos, while the other remains constant. (Note: the current Daily Minimum Wage is 80 pesos or about $4.44usd).

It has been two weeks since the new taxi union leader took office, Jose Magana Galue, and there are now concerns that he has not yet determined his team, after promising to include representatives from the groups of the opposition candidates. His main opponent in the election, Miguel Chan Mena, is complaining that no official efforts have been made to carry this out. Three spaces on the committee were promised to the people of Mr. Chan Mena, although specific positions haven't been determined.
The election took place on December 16 and the new director took office on January 5th.

Residents of the La Miraflores neighborhood have requested the intervention of municipal authorities to prevent the frequent discharge of sewage on the public highway and contamination of the nearby Salina Grande lake. They say there is a puddle with bad smells that extend several meters into the road, and the foul water is spread by the tires of passing vehicles, which is unhealthy for the children who play outside every afternoon.
The location is between the parallel streets of Carmorán (sic) and Fragata. It appears that there is an obstruction in the pipeline that caused some of the sewer water to overflow and it failed to reach the Aguakán sewage station located a short distance away. Residents said that the puddle was there for hours, causing complaints, because this area is causing an unhealthy situation near Salina Grande lake. This lake captures runoff from the streets of the neighborhoods of Miraflores, Cañotal, La Gloria, Caridad del Cobre and Salina Grande.
National Week of AA: "Sharing forces"

The organization of Alcoholics Anonymous in Isla Mujeres is participating in the National Week Of “Compartiendo Esfuerzo” / Sharing Forces, which is the 23rd edition and is dedicated to students and promoting awareness about the development of alcoholism among young people. In a recent survey, it was reported that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 17 already have problems with drinking. The AA members plan to work with primary, middle school, and high school students during this campaign taking place Jan. 15-21. The closing of the campaign is scheduled to be held at the CROC union headquarters.

Wear a Helmet!
With the aim of supporting those parents with children who do not have a helmet or whose helmets are broken.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.
Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.
Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi. (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
