Carlos García Castilla, 68, better known as "Válvula", passed away on Friday in Isla Mujeres. He was the discoverer of the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks of Isla Mujeres, which was made famous in the 1980's by diver Ramón Bravo Prieto, ending with the hypothesis that existed about sharks never sleeping or resting.
He was born May 2, 1949, and during his youth he was known for his exceptional lung capacity and ability to free dive to great depths. He went down in history as the discoverer of the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, which became famous thanks to Ramon Bravo, may he rest in peace.
For many years, the scientific community thought that sharks did not sleep, since they lack a swimming bladder; it was thought they they always needed to stay awake. But this hypothesis was challenged when Valvula found a cave where there were sharks inside who were immobile and resting, as though they were sleeping. At first he was astonished and then he realized he could approach them and touch them, without any reaction from them.
He shared his discovery with friends, and Ramon Bravo documented the sharks, which caught the attention of hundreds of scientists around the world, who did not believe it. Many experts thought it was a lie and they were only cat (Gata) sharks, but with Ramon Bravo's videos, the world came to know about this place, located a few nautical miles from Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo. Despite all the publicity, Mr. Garcia never received any royalties or assistance from his discovery, and he lived the last years of his life with the support of his family and friends, who made donations, which he always appreciated.
He had suffered from health problems on several occasions, including recovering from a heart attack and fighting diabetes. He passed away from complications from diabetes and hypertension. Rest in peace, our good friend, Válvula.

In the late 1960's, Islander Carlos García Castilla (known as “Válvula”for his exceptional lung capacity) was hunting for large groupers and lobsters in caves east of Isla Mujeres when he discovered "The Cave of the Sleeping Sharks". At that time, scientists believed that sharks required movement to live, and when Ramon Bravo sent his photographs and videos to the Smithsonian Institute, they were thought to be fakes. A female marine biologist who specialized in sharks, Dr. Eugenie Clark (aka The Shark Lady), came to Isla Mujeres and studied the phenomena. Her research was featured in National Geographic magazine and earned her a gold medal from the Society of Women Geographers. The Cave of the sleeping sharks was featured in National Geographic in 1975 and again in 1983. LINK to photo.

his family to Isla Mujeres, aboard the Calypso, and worked with Ramon
Bravo to create documentaries about the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks and the March of the Spiny Lobsters.

Carlos Garcia Castilla, “Válvula”, discoverer of the "Cave of the Sleeping Shark" died after a long illness, at the age of 68.
He worked with the famous documentary filmmaker and Mexican journalist Ramón Bravo Prieto in the 1970s and 80s on various audiovisual projects about underwater life, and obviously about the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, located three miles north of Isla Mujeres. He was part of the crew of divers for several films, as well as for the work done at the island by the French captain Jacques Yves Cousteau aboard the oceanographic vessel "Calypso".Mr Garcia was a lifelong friend of Bravo until his sudden death of on February 21,1998 at his house in Isla Mujeres; Many friends of “Válvula” will miss him, including the Celis and Magana families, and many others. He was born on May 2, 1949, and celebrated his 68th birthday at his mother's house in Cancun, where he was living during his last days. Isla Mujeres historian shared the sad news of his death with the community shortly after it occurred and wrote on his Facebook page, May this notable fishermen and navigator of Quintana Roo Rest in Peace."
Like his mentor Ramon Bravo, he received little recognition in his life. He lacked official assistance when he needed it most when his foot became infected after an injury.
In the 1960's, Mr Garcia discovered the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks while free diving, where he had gone looking for large groupers to sell. He nearly drowned in that area once when a large grouper pulled him down to the seabed, after the fish had escaped from the boat and the line was caught around the fisherman's foot, until he managed to get free. He talked about it during an interview published in Por Esto.
Specialists associated with National Geographic investigated the cave and discovered that the sharks could 'sleep and rest' effortlessly because of the rich oxygen content of the water, which came from a cenote under the Yucatan Peninsula. The boat "Calypso" arrived to do research work in the area.
Mr. Calos Garcia participated in several documentaries about the underwater life and helped capture scenes of nature under the sea for Mexican and foreign films. Today, the Cave of the Sleeping sharks is internationally known, and divers come to the place, on tours from Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Dozens of dive shops offer this recreational service online for lovers of underwater nature of the Mexican Caribbean.

The port remained closed for small boats as of noon on Saturday, but the effects of cold front #45 had reduced and the winds were expected to continue decreasing.The sunny weather on Saturday is expected to continue on Sunday. Tourism was good on Saturday, with many people arriving on the ferries from Punta Sam, Puerto Juarez, and the Hotel Zone. Nearly all of the fleet of ~700 golf carts were rented, as well as scooters and bicycles. Tourists were visiting El Pescador, Playa Lancheros, Sac-Bajo, Parque Garrafón and Punta Sur, as well as the beaches and nearby swimming areas. Offshore in the Bay, people were enjoying MUSA (the underwater museum) the Cross in the Bay, Los Manchones, and El Farito. More good weather and visiting tourists are expected on Sunday.
On Monday, the south-southeast winds are expected to return, pushing the already weak northern winds, according to the forecast of the SCT (Ministry of Communications and Transport)

Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower can be seen, but it peaks in the predawn hours of Friday and Saturday. It is caused by debris from Halley's Comet. The most meteors can be seen during the hours before 5a, when dawn starts (After moonset which is 1:33a on Wed, 2:18a on Thur., 3:00a on Fri, and 3:49 on Sat).
