Approximately 100 runners from different parts of Mexico participated in the 6 kilometer race which was part of the Navy Day activities, starting at the Fishermen's Monument and ending at the Naval base. In the Men's division first place went to Juan Mercado of Guadalajara, second to Vladimir Gonzalez, and third for Víctor Beltrán, who completed the race in 21, 23 and 24 minutes, respectively. In the Women's division, the winner was Rosa Cruz, and Maria Elena Espinoza took second and third went to Nayeli Chinap.
Also for Navy Day, a friendly soccer tournament was played between the "Veterans of Isla Mujeres", the Navy, and the Harbor Master. Names of officials in attendance are given.
Improvements are being done on the 'oriente' (eastern) bicycle path, which will include the construction of 1000 square meters of bicycle lane, benches and signs, for a total investment of 1.4 million pesos from federal and municipal funds. This is for the benefit of the health of islanders and the environment. The Mayor explained that it will encourage physical activity, reduce pollution, and improve the quality of life.
He said, "As a government, we have the firm intention to undertake policies and actions that contribute to the care of the environment. We are in a municipality with a natural environment that is rich in biodiversity which requires a firm commitment to its preservation, so that future generations of islanders also enjoy it as we do now. "
This is why the City of Isla Mujeres, through the work of various municipal agencies and with the support of other levels of government, is committed to continuing to manage resources that promote the rehabilitation and construction of urban infrastructure for alternative means of transportation which represent a concrete and feasible solution to the problems of vehicular congestion and environmental pollution.
The Noches Magicas performances on Sunday evening delighted island families who gathered on the Town Square to watch the theater group "La Bambalina" perform the play, 'Sharks, Likeable Creatures". The dance troupe JRC Ritmos Latinos, from Motul Yucatan delighted the audience with their beautiful choreography spotlighting their talent and the flavors of the Caribbean. Both groups were given recognition by the municipal government, led by the mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, who through this type of events reaffirms his commitment to promote arts and culture throughout the municipality.

No major incidents among fishermen

On Tuesday a boat was towed into port, after a mechanical failure. There have been no major boat incidents among the fishermen, except the rescue of three crew members of a small fishing boat after nearly 24 hours in March.
It is noted that the fishermen take risks daily, routinely traveling 15 or 20 miles, and some are using engines that are in need of renewal. However these engines cost over 10 thousand dollars or nearly 200,000 pesos. The government offers annual financial assistance, but it is often difficult for the fishermen to save their ~50,000 peso share of the payment, which some blame on over-exploitation and unfair competition.
The lobster season closed on June 30 and the more than 100 fishing boats are now engaged in catching fish.

There is a disagreement about a debt and a piece of property between Mateo Burgos Garrido and Alvaro Burgo Rios, in which the former admits he owes 250,000 pesos to the latter, but claims he did not sign over the ~200 square meters in the Federal Zone behind the Middle School, and that he has offered to repay the debt. He said the money was borrowed in 2014 for surgery to recover sight in both of his eyes, and now one eye is fine, and the other is blind.

May 28 The weather was good on Sunday, with partly cloudy skies, and the forecasts indicate the strong winds from the southeast could continue on Monday. A good amount of visitors arrived, but business owners complained of slow sales and the hotels were half empty.
The Taxi union held a basketball tournament at the Middle School, and prizes were awarded to the top three places. Taxi drivers are encouraged to participate in physical activities such as this to prevent problems that can affect them from spending a great deal of time behind the wheel.
It is noted that a few weeks ago the government installed exercise equipment along the Caribbean coast, and at an early hour several people can be observed using them, and tourists can be seen jogging in the areas where they stay.

Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower can be seen, but it peaks in the predawn hours of Friday and Saturday. It is caused by debris from Halley's Comet. The most meteors can be seen during the hours before 5a, when dawn starts (After moonset which is 1:33a on Wed, 2:18a on Thur., 3:00a on Fri, and 3:49 on Sat).
