ISLA MUJERES, 18 de mayo.-.
Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, said his administration supports events that generate economic improvement for the island's inhabitants, such as the International Fishing Tournament "Cosme Alberto Martinez Magaña", which will be held from May 19 to 21st. He said this important event is organized by the municipal government, and is one of the most "consolidated" (consolidados) with fans of this sport, both in Mexico and the US, therefore this 14th edition is expected to have a good turnout of participants and visitors.
He said, "The tournament is exciting and fun for fans of the sport, both islanders and those who come from other parts of Mexico and from abroad. We expect it to be very successful this year, and of course, to offer great benefits to those who make their living from tourism in Isla Mujeres."
The International Fishing Tournament "Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña" was the first to implement the "catch and release" modality, and today it is a magnet for tourists and foreign fishing enthusiasts, which contributes to maintaining optimal levels of hotel occupancy on the island.
The general coordinator for the tournament, Humberto Moguel, thanked the Mayor for the facilities and support. He said they expect more than 120 boats to register and are offering prizes which total to more than a million pesos in value.

Zeta gas truck causes damage to storm drain grates
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/camion-de-zgas-provoca-dan…/
Due to the fragility and poor condition of the storm drainage grates in colonia Salinas, by the old Oasis, the Zeta gas delivery truck fell into one of the storm drains, where the water flows. This caused alarm among the neighbors since it had at least a half dozen propane tanks as cargo.
The accident occurred on Thursday morning, when the gas truck was going from south to north along pronlongacion Martinez Ross Avenue, and a garbage truck was coming from the opposite direction. The gas truck yielded to the trash truck but the grate didn't hold the weight of the gas truck and it fell into the storm drain channel. This caused alarm because in addition to the noise, there was fear that a cyclinder had fallen from the truck and could cause an explosion.
There have been complaints on social networks about the poor state of the grates and the potential danger, including one FB user who said he has complained directly to the Mayor and other officials, including the Director of Civil Protection, but hasn't gotten a response. It is noted that this is the route the leads to "Cesar Mendoza Santana" elementary school, with concerns that an accident could involve a child or mother.
Boat ambulance receiving new motors
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/ambulancia-maritima-de-isl…/
The maritime ambulance that is under the responsibility and protection of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo) is undergoing maintenance, and meanwhile emergency transfers will be available with assistance from a private individual, according to Alicia Ricalde Magaña , Director of APIQRoo. The two "Mercury" outboard engines were having problems and are being replaced with two "Yamaha" motors.
She said the investment for this work was about 700,000 pesos and they are currently continuing to work on the adaptation of the two new motors, which is under the supervision of Wilbert Ancona. She explained that the motors were acquired during the last administration, but they were kept in the APIQRoo facilities in Cozumel.
She said the adaptation has been laborious, but the boat should be operating at 100 percent in another week. Meanwhile, with the help of a private individual, there is coordination with the hospital to continue offering this service. She said it is a priority that emergency transfer service continues to be available, and it is important that the boat is in optimum condition.

CROC union will offer financing for housing to members
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/croc-ofrecera-a-sus-agremi…/
CROC union leader in Isla Mujeres, Román Maldonado Euán, said at least 150 union workers are expected to benefit from the housing finance program. He said this is one of 16 social programs that the union offers on a national level, which includes the members on the island. This one way to give the worker options to have a decent home, which they all deserve, he said.
Representatives of the CADU realty company will visit all the workplaces between May 15 and June 15, and will assist employees with the loan process to help them obtain the necessary documents and meet all the requirements to obtain credit. About 20 percent of the 800 workers are expected to benefit, which is about 160 hotel and restaurant employees in Isla Mujeres. He said that among the workers are employees of the hotels and restaurants, such as accountants and administrators, who are not affiliated with the CROC union, who will also benefit.
Seeking a name for the rescued dolphin
http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/buscan-el-nombre-para-el-d…/
May 18 After more than two weeks since the stranded dolphin was rescued from on the the Caribbean beaches of Isla Mujeres, Dolphin Discovery has issued an invitation to choose the ideal name for the animal, which they expect to liberate in the near future.
Four names were proposed on a video, which was posted on Thursday and has received more than 2000 views at this time. (Update on Friday morning, it has 9500 views). By selecting one of the four Facebook reaction icons, people can choose a name for the dolphin, who continues to gain weight and could be released next week. The options are Paki, Isleño, Itzae and Paal Yaax
Last week, Roberto Sánchez Okrucry, head of veterinarians at Dolphin Discovery, explained that the dolphin was recovering well, but they want him to gain weight so they can release him. He said, "The dolphin was very underweight when he arrived, and now he is eating on his own, but we are concerned about his weight." Therefore they are feeding him so that he can gain at least 20 more kilograms (~45lbs). The veterinarian said he did not know how much longer he would remain under observation, but after he gains at least ~20 kilos, they will talk to the authorities about setting him free.
LINK to video on FB from DD which says....On May 3 a dolphin was beached on a beach in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo. With help from City officials, tourists, and specialists from Dolphin Discover, he was taken to a secure, safe area at the Tortugranja facility. After various studies and a great deal of work by our specialists and veterinarians, the dolphin has improved considerably. And we are working together to enable him to return to his habitat. But first, we would like you to help us find a name for him, one that is as special as he is and that will help us to always remember him. Vote!

A "Hat Breakfast" was held to raise funds for the Center for Attention to Domestic Violence (CAVI) to assist minors who are victims of domestic violence. Support was coordinated by volunteers with the Fifth Region Naval Base in Isla Mujeres and the DIF social service agency for this traditional event, which is one of the first scheduled activites to collect money for this social problem.
The president of the DIF, Mrs. Paola Orrico de Carrillo, led the event, which was held in the Multiple Purpose Room of the Navy. She thanked the guests and spoke about being committed to continuing to work at eradicating domestic violence. She said the funds raised will be allocated to the rehabilitation of CAVI, which will provide better and more timely care to those who come daily for help.
She said, "This action is extremely important, because the island's citizens arrive with a need to improve their quality of life and by providing them with adequate and optimal facilities we begin a process of rapid recovery." The needs of the residents of the municipality who are in a vulnerable state are many and resources are limited, and I appreciate the great support of all the women who are with us today." Names of some of the attendees are given, which included officials from DIF organizations in nearby municipalities and from the Isla Mujeres DIF, the mother and sister of the Mayor, and a coordinator for volunteer work with the Red Cross.

New street signs are being installed in colonia Amplifacation la Gloria, because previously many of the street names were just painted on the buildings. Now they are on their own poles in the sidewalks, which should help visitors find their way around. In other news, the Director of ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime Zone agency) has said the about 20 percent of the 1000 concessionaires are behind on their payments and will be required to catch up. Two notifications have been sent out in the past two months, and the agency intends to reduce the current delinquencies in payments, and could begin enforcement later this month or in June.
