ISLA MUJERES, 12 de noviembre.-
This week the 21st case of decompression was reported, from diving deeply, and the fisherman died later, after hyperbaric treatment. After he had complications, they intended to transfer him to Cancun, but all efforts were futile. Erick Pinto, 46, who belonged to one of the island fishing cooperatives, died after a day of diving for lobster.
When he was admitted to the hyperbaric chamber at 4:30pm on Wednesday, he presented with type II decompression illness, which is considered as moderate. He presented with symptoms of knee pain, mottled skin, abdominal and lung pain, and severe dehydration. Some said that in addition to decompression illness, he had severe carbon monoxide poisoning, apparently from the compressor equipment he used for diving. It is presumed that the decompression and severe carbon monoxide poisoning are the factors which caused his health to worsen and led to his death.
There have been 21 fishermen who have suffered decompression illness, of which 20 were successfully treated and there has been only one fatal outcome. These cases of decompression are mostly recorded during the lobster seasons. (The tally of the number of fishermen treated for decompression usually begins with the season on July 1, until the end of the season at the end of February.)

Isla Mujeres Mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, recognized the contribution of the company "Maritima Isla Mujeres" who are engaged in transportation of cargo by sea, and are essential to keeping the island connected with the Continental Zone, as well as keeping it stocked with essential supplies.
With company representatives, the Mayor toured the interior of one of the ferries that provides transportation of vehicles and cargo between the island and Punta Sam, as it resumes operations after having received preventative maintenance.
This ferry has a capacity for 40 vehicles and will make seven trips daily between Isla Mujeres and Punta Sam. With reactivation of this boat, the departure schedule between Punta Sam and the island is extended, starting at 6am, Monday to Saturday, to provide better service for the community.
Franco González Padrón, chairman of the Board of Directors of the company "Marítima Isla Mujeres", said that with the reactivation of this second ferry, passenger and cargo service are guaranteed on a regular basis.

Dengue & Zika statistics
Dengue sigue siendo lo temible [+] Ver mas
Among the seven municipalities within Sanitary District #2, there have been 150 confirmed cases of zika, of which six were confirmed on the island, according to Homero Leon Perez, who is head of this District within the Health Department of Quintana Roo. He said of the 150 cases in the District, 50 have been in pregnant women, who are receiving care and treatment.
Regarding the rumor that there have been more that six cases on the island, he said there has never been any intention of hiding anything. He said, "The reviews and studies must be conducted, to see if the samples are positive or negative, and not everyone who comes in with a fever has a case of zika." He said there are similarities in symptoms and that people who don't know are diagnosing themselves, assuming they have a condition like zika, when it could actually be something simpler. He said, "The onset of salmonellosis or the flu can cause the same symptoms as zika or dengue, and those cases are being disregarded. However, we are currently more focused on the issue of pregnant women."
State and municipal officials agree that the recent confirmation of six cases of zika in Isla Mujeres are powerful motivators to maintain the efforts to clean the surroundings, with community participation. Municipal authorities, led by Mayor Juan Carrillo, have developed a solid campaign to clean up urban spaces, with resident participation. He has asked people to adhere to a protocol of keeping their property clean, including their yards, patios, and roofs, to prevent the proliferation of the mosquitoes that spread these diseases.
Among the diseases of zika, chikungunya, and dengue, (in the District) the latter has caused the most cases and continues to be the leader. As of week 42, there have been a total of 124 cases of dengue in the Northern Zone of the state, of which only five were registered in Isla Mujeres, where no cases of chikungunya have been registered.
Planning to resume trash project
Buscan retomar proyecto de basuraVer mas
More than five years ago, there was a federal government proposal for the trash to be separated, before it is taken from the Trash Transfer facility to the regional landfill on the mainland. The municipal government has plans to reactivate this proposal in 2017, once the accumulated trash has been removed.
The municipal government has been working to remove the accumulated trash, which they inherited from the previous administration. Currently, there are ~700 tons of garbage to be transported to the Continental Zone, but work should be faster in the next few weeks, now that the second vehicle ferry has returned.
This administration has made a commitment to clean up the facility by the end of the year, and to have no more accumulation, as well as to renew 'the fleet de limpieza' (lit. cleaning fleet...trash collection trucks, I think). After that, they will institute a plan to adapt the site for separation of trash, with an investment of several million pesos by the municipal government, according to Jose Rios Chale, Director of Public Services.
According to the adaption plan for the Trash Transfer Facility, this will include the installation of a large 'nave' to recover plastics, metals, and cardboard. If a policy of separation of trash is instituted in the homes, the volume of trash to be transferred could be reduced by two thirds, according to specialists who conducted feasibility studies.
