ISLA MUJERES, 17 de noviembre.-
The detention of a taxi by inspectors with the Communications and Transport Agency of SINTRA resulted in a confrontation between taxi drivers and SINTRA personnel, which required the presence of the municipal Police. The officials stopped taxi #114, which did not have its insurance papers in the vehicle, and they proceeded to put the vehicle on the tow truck. However, about two dozen taxi drivers arrived who wanted to prevent the transfer of the cab to the impound yard. It appears that this vehicle is owned by the leader of the taxi union, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez.
The taxi remained on the tow truck for about three hours while discussions occurred between delegates of the taxi union, SINTRA inspectors, and the municipal Police Chief, Jaime Alberto Ongay Ortiz. The police chief said he was there to guarantee the safety of those involved and to prevent closure of the road.
The SINTRA inspectors said the taxi was detained because the driver was unable to present an insurance policy. Delegates for the cabbies arrived and presented the policy, but the SINTRA inspector said the document was late and they had already issued a fine.

The problem of Diabetes is very serious in Isla Mujeres: Dr. Blancas Torres
El problema de la diabetes si es muy grave en Isla Mujeres: Blancas Torres - http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/el-problema-de-la-diabetes…/
November 14 was International Day of Diabetes. Dr. Patricia Blancas Torres said diabetes is considered an international pandemic, and the problem of diabetes is alarming in Isla Mujeres, where little had been done to limit the disease. She said, "This is an ongoing problem, affecting members of every family on the island, and it is a disease that is chronic, debilitating, and expensive." It is a disease that advances silently and affects dozens of people year after year.
Dr. Blancas is responsible for the Department of Health within the City government, and she said it is important to focus on campaigns offering education about nutrition and the importance of physical activity and exercise. Island families need to be reeducated about eating foods that are low in grease and sugar. She said Diabetes in Isla Mujeres is a serious problem of concern. She said we need to have diets that are more natural, including more vegetables and protein, and to avoid consuming street foods that are high in saturated fats. Housewives need to return to the cooking and preparing home cooked foods, and put an end to this daily diet of flours, taquitos, burritos, embutidos, tamales, etc.
She recognized that this is complicated by the lifestyles of many families, but eating habits are learned by the children, and with this diet they are destined to a terrible illness. The diet consumed by most islanders causes obesity at an early age, which ends in serious illnesses. She said there are many children who are in grade school who are very overweight and this will lead to diabetes. She said the main problem is in the homes, not in the schools, with parents teaching their children how to eat. She said few are accustomed to eating vegetables at home, and they need to watch less television and have more physical activities in the fresh air. She said the problem becomes more serious every year, and now presents in persons under 25 years of age, whereas previously it was rare to see a patient under 40.
She said diabetes is very expensive, with patients often needing daily medications. One family member who is diabetic can consume all of a minimum monthly wages of the family because the medicines are not cheap. She said it is regrettable that the medical sector is limited to two or three medicines which they have access to, via the health programs; but sometimes it is necessary for patients to purchase them and they are very costly.
For those who are afflicted by this disease, it is recommended that they change their dietary habits and exercise, and in this way they may be able to significantly reduce their dependence on medications.
