Recognition & appreciation for retiring middle school director  

Padres refrendan compromiso con la escuela

    The Society of Parents of the Middle School “Benito Juárez” reaffirmed its commitment to work hand in hand with the teaching staff of the campus during this partial change of administration caused by the retirement of  director Carlos Canto Salazar. Appreciation was expressed toward the Director and his work to improve the school during his 14 months as director, and he was awarded a plaque of recognition. He also shared a meal with his staff. Improvements to the campus included upgrading the electrical system and installing a substation, replacing a third of the fence, adapting the library, installing fans and painting. 
   The Director said the first year students received their textbooks last week, the second year students will receive theirs on Monday, and the third year students should receive theirs by Tuesday

Few visitors due to weather

    With intermittent showers in the morning and cloudy weather threatening more rain, tourism was reduced on the island and fewer people visited the beaches. Since it wasn't windy, the port remained open for general navigation. Few fishermen went out and those who did returned with small catches. They are looking forward to the arrival of the north winds that cause the lobster to migrate and improve their catches.

Transparency of municipal finances

     The director of the municipal Transparency and Access to Public Information Agency, Miguel Antonio May Tzab, said the City continues to comply with the laws about transparency in government, putting information on the City website. He said the municipal administration is committed to transparency and accountability. Municipal officials have attended training sessions in the System of Transparency Obligations Portals (SIPOT).

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are a variety of restaurants including Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, La Chatita, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery , Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30  minutes to walk downtown.

Wednesday nights at 8:45p, the group "Isla en Bici" bike around the isle, meeting at Juarez &  Abasolo. Lights required, helmet recommended. LINK   

In October,  fishermen in this region are banned from catching Conch, and Shrimp until the 15th.  LINK 

The new date for the Women's Fishing Tournament "El Dorado del Caribe" still hasn't been announced.

Officially, protection of nesting sea turtles continues on the east coasts of the island thru mid-October, but monitoring for nests continues until the end of the month. The eggs are collected and taken to the incubation pen at the Tortugranja. Releases of the hatchlings are done by personnel with the facility at sunrise or sunset when there is less heat and fewer predators. Three species nest on the island, with the most nests being from Green turtles, second are the Loggerhead, and third are the Hawksbill.They are expecting there will be a total of 1500 nests by the end of the month, which will be a new record.

Oct. 31-Halloween is celebrated on Hidalgo street with foreigners & businesses passing out candy and small items after dusk.There's also a procession thru the colonias.

Nov. 1 Dia de los Muertos  There's usually a candlelit procession around nightfall from the cemetery down HIdalgo to the Casa de la Cultura where there is usually a Catrina contest and displays of altars from different regions of Mexico. The procession participants are dressed in black and white, or catrina-garb, or regional clothing.
