Tsunami Alert Simulation planned for  Thursday from 8am to 3pm
 The Department of the Navy-Armada of Mexico as National Maritime Authority, informs the general population that next Thursday, March 15 a "Simulation of Tsunami Warning" from 8am to 3pm on the island, with participation by the three levels of government and members of the Local Coordinating Organization.  
     This exercise will be carried out to improve the preparation efforts and response times in the event of a possible tsunami in the region of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, which will help to ensure that the Naval Command, as well as the State and Municipal Civil Protection Agencies, to be prepared to respond in case of tsunami and possible problems that may arise. 
     It is important to inform citizens that this simulation will be carried out without endangering human life at sea or in the marine environment.  
       With these actions, the Navy-Navy Secretariat of Mexico supports the strengthening of measures of prevention for the protection of the civilian population, in the face of possible natural disasters. (Note: This is done annually in March & some years it has been national and other it was regional.)


Isla Mujeres Maritime Terminal included in security plan: Port Authority   LINK    
     The Director General of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) Alicia Ricalde Magaña said the Maritime Terminal of Isla Mujeres also be included within the project to have the Protection Code Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS). 
    Just a few days ago, it was announced that within six months, the ports of Quintana Roo would be the first to have a code for the protection of ships and port facilities. 
    She said that after a meeting, it was agreed to take actions to reinforce, in a coordinated manner, the safety of the shipping terminals, such as the incorporation of 30 officers of the Federal Preventive Police (PFP). She explained that it is first being implemented in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.
    She said that the experts are making a diagnosis and based on that, afterwards, measures will be taken. 
   She also noted that 40 million pesos are being dedicated by the SCT (Ministry of Communication and Transport) for the protection  of maritime terminals with the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), through the General Directorate of Ports, for the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment. , training of personnel for its management and adjustments in the facilities of the port terminals. 
     Ms. Ricalde Magana indicated that the instructions from  Governor Carlos Joaquín are to guarantee security to users of port terminals, residents or vacationers.

Alicia Ricalde Magaña, general director of APIQRoo (the Quintana Roo Integral Port Administration)(Apiqroo), said that within six months the ports of this state will be the first in Mexican cabotage -with routes to the interior of the country-, to have the Ship and Port Facilities Protection Code (PBIP) that until now is only applied to ports of 'high altura', which cover international routes.
The official said that in recent days authorities of the three levels of government held working meetings in Mexico City, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, in which they agreed on various actions to strengthen, in a coordinated manner, the safety of the marine terminals, including the incorporation of 30 officers of the Federal Preventive Police (PFP) to monitor the facilities of the maritime terminal of San Miguel, Cozumel, where the APIQRoo will assist with the food and lodging for the police.
The General Director of Ports, Alejandro Hernández Cervantes, with the General Coordinator of Ports and Merchant Marines, Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa, is providing the necessary support to carry out a diagnosis of risks in the maritime terminals of Quintana Roo, which will be the responsibility of the Institute of Nautical Education and Port AC (IENPAC), while the Director of UNICAPAM of the SEMAR (Department of the Navy), Admiral Jorge Manuel Sainz Zamorano, undertook to send a team of experts to participate in the risk analysis.

(IENPAC) Captain of Height Miguel Ángel Ozuna Rodríguez, of the Port Captaincies and Maritime Affairs Unit, Captain Sergio Varela of the Federal Secretariat of Tourism, José Luis Montemayor Jasso, of the Federal Police Juan Manuel Ayala Guarro, of the Public Ministry of the Federation, Luis Enrique Alférez Kantun, of the boat companies, and authorities of both municipalities, as well as the head of the APIQRoo, Alicia Ricalde Magaña.

Monday, March 5 at 9am there will be a Civic Ceremony commemorating the 501st anniversary of the first visit by Europeans to Isla Mujeres. It will be held at the Paso de la Tirguena on the Eastern Malecon (near the public bathrooms by the Town Square, behind the old hospital.)

Friday, March 30 Good Friday The Via Crusis, reenactment of the Passion of Christ, begins at the Sacred Heart Church in La Gloria. It includes more than 50 actors and travels 5 km to the Immaculate Conception Church downtown where the crucifixion will be reenacted. They will pause at the Guadalupe Chapel in Salina Chica along the way.
