Today, Isla Mujeres continues to report a total of 258 cases with 23 deaths and now there are 210 recovered.. The state geoportal for 1/27 reports 9 active cases: Downtown-1, Meteorologico-1, Salina Grande-2, 4 in 23 de noviembre (again) and La Gloria-1. The national map for 1/26 reports 186 suspicious and 159 negatives.

The municipality of Isla Mujeres ended 2020 with a total of 237 reported cases of C-19, with 21 deaths and 199 recovered. In the first 26 days of January, there have been 21 new cases reported for a total of 258, two more deaths reported for a total of 23, and nine more recovered for a total of 208. The growth rate at the end of December for the Northern Zone was 0.23 and is now 0.29.

The manatee who migrated here from Florida has been captured for clinical studies and observation, and will be released at the site of its capture. It is a type of manatee that is not native to this area, and they are studying the possible reason for its migration, as well as its state of health. It has been living in the Makax lagoon in recent months. The manatee has been identified via the US Wildlife agency because it has distinctive markings caused by a boat propeller. In addition to the detailed clinical analysis, they will place a radio transmitter before releasing the endangered animal.
This is a joint project involving PROFEPA (Federal Procurators Office of Environmental Protection), specialized staff of the AMHMAR Committee on Animal Welfare and Education, and the municipal Department of Ecology and the Environment. Officials emphasized that there has never been any intention to keep or take the manatee, which was captured due to its endangered status and not being native to this area, to study the reason for its migration and the state of its health.
The "Isla Mujeres Contigo/With You" campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of respect for girls and women and for the prevention of violence against them, by encouraging reports to 998 229 4411, 911 and 089. Women may also ask for help at the IMM (Isla Mujeres Women's Institute), where they can receive legal advice and psychological support.

TV Isla Mujeres reports that taxi drivers are complaining that officials are not being strict enough with the Isleños Bus company, while the taxis are being frequently monitored to ensure that C-19 protocols are being followed and that they are complying with capacity limits. Several taxi drivers recorded one of the buses which was at full capacity when it was stopped at a checkpoint. People were asked to get off the bus, but what the officer did not expect was the same bus pulled over a few meters past the checkpoint and picked up all the passengers, despite the officer's warning. In addition to recording the event, taxi drivers questioned the officer. They say there is more risk of contagion in a bus than in a taxi and ask that the authorities intervene and apply the laws evenly. LINK
The head of the CANIRAC business association, Baltazar Maldonado Tun, said many local businesses are currently only operating at about 30%, which is only enough for the main expenses such as rent and salaries. He said there is concern that the state epidemiological light will return to red and then "everything will go to hell". He said hopefully we will all take care of ourselves and tourism so that we do not return to the color red, because then things will get worse. He said returning to red would mean more restrictions and consequently closures of businesses, which would cause serious damage for everyone who makes a living from tourism. LINK

Jan. 6 Dia de los Tres Reyes/Three Kings Day
The Thor Heyerdahl traveling school-sailboat normally visits in late January-early February with about three dozen high school students on board. Under the tutelage of the experienced crew, the students learn to work together, sailing and navigating, as well as receiving their normal lessons. They sail from Germany to the Caribbean, but it's very possibly suspended this year.
