ISLA MUJERES, 14 de septiembre.-
- The municipal DIF of Isla Mujeres has joined in the collection of assistance for the victims of the earthquake last week in the States of Oaxaca and Chiapas, with the installation of two food donation centers, in the Town Hall and at the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center (CRIM). All islanders are invited to contribute between 8am and 7pm.
The items they are collecting include canned goods, rice, beans, sugar and other foods that will be shipped in the coming days. They are not accepting clothing, shoes, or water because these are bulky to transport. The donations will be transferred to the state DIF who will transport them to the affected areas.
In addition, the Red Cross has been collecting food donations since Monday, as well as a restaurateur who is being supported by the foreign community, owners of hotels and restaurants, and the general community of Isla Mujeres.

The work promoted by President Juan Carrillo is reflected throughout Isla Mujeres. During his # first governmental Informe report, he explained the progress of our economy, tourism, quality of life, education, infrastructure and environment. LINK
In his first annual governmental Informe report, the Mayor highlighted the advances that have taken place in the areas of security, tourism, services, public works, employment opportunities, social assistance and the environment. He spoke about offering equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their ideologies or beliefs and the need for everyone to work together, to continue to create the reality of the future that we dreamed of yesterday and are creating today.
He was accompanied by representatives of the three levels of government during his report, and he acknowledged the support of the City Council, working together closely with the state and federal government, to directly benefit the island community. He said that the municipality today faces the great challenge of growing and developing in a balanced manner, with investments that generate employment and capital, while respecting our environment, since sustainability depends on a harmonious coexistence between man and the nature.
In response to this, the services - such as garbage collection and public lighting - were brought up to date, and a historic budget was used to carry out these public works, so that improvement occurred equally on the island and in the Continental Zone.
In this first year, the commitment was fulfilled to completely clean out the Isla Mujeres Trash Transfer Facility, with the removal of the 9,500 tons of waste that had accumulated there over 9 years.
"Today we have more cleaning units, more trucks, more personnel, but the commitment is to continue equipping the municipality, because the objective is to take care of our health, and offer a beautiful Isla Mujeres to those who visit us," said the mayor.
After months of attention, 95% of the inhabited areas of the island and 80% in Rancho Viejo are illuminated and the government is working to provide 100% coverage.
A major investment of 30 million pesos was achieved, changing the lives of thousands of people, especially in Rancho Viejo on the mainland, with the paving of streets in 5 colonias and the construction of 3 new fully equipped multi use sports courts, a new library and a housing program for the benefit of ~400 families.
In the area of public safety, with the support of the State Government and the Federal Government, new units were incorporated to cover the entire municipality, which is considered one of the safest in the state. And thanks to programs like the breathalyzer, they were able to reduce the accident rate by 70%, he said.
The mayor concluded by saying that in regard to providing attention to the most disadvantaged inhabitants of the municipality, his administration has increased the medical brigades and has provided examinations for women to their colonias, as well as eye examinations, dental sercices, and general care. In addition, there is now an internist in the island's hospital thanks to the Health Coordination and Collaboration Agreement.
Names of many of the officials in attendance are given.
Islanders now have more security, efficient services for cleaning up and garbage, and decent public spaces that allow us to have a better quality of life. The quality of life in Isla Mujeres is improved in terms of education, sports, and assistance for the community.

Implementing programs and educational assistance to help the children and young people of the island.

Selina Hostels and VolunQuest are working together LINK
Selina Hostels is a new platform for travelers from all over the world that has arrived in Mexico. Their philosophy is to offer local experiences with social awareness. Their project that started in Cancun has scheduled social work in Isla Mujeres. In coordination with the VolunQuest association, these projects became reality on Tuesday, when young employees from Selina Hostels did cleaning work at César Mendoza Santana Elementary School, in addition to leveling hazardous areas and providing shade for the students.
Kristen Tywan, head of VolunQuest said in the upcoming days they will be doing similar work at Julio Sauri Espinoza Elementary School, in addition to building a home for a senior couple near Rancho Viejo, in the mainland part of the municipality. She said the current governmental administration has facilitated transportation costs for these volunteers who are employees of Selina Hostels and who donate a percentage of their time, paid by the company, to social service.
Loic Delarboulas, head of operations for Selina Hostels, explained that the company was born in Panama by travelers seeking to create more than a place of accommodation, designed to offer local experiences and to foster interaction with the community and among the travelers. S/he explained that the values of the company are based on four themes: Art and Culture, Education, Environment, and Entrepreneurship, providing shelter for young people and digital nomads. This concept has been very successful in countries like Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia.
"Although we have not opened a hostel in Quintana Roo, this is the first time we started with social projects before the opening, but we want to do it in all the countries where we are going to go. Selina has been in Mexico for six months, with our headquarters in Cancun, "said Loic Delarboulas.
Their mission is to open these hostels in Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Bacalar, Puerto Morelos, Holbox and a second property in the Hotel Zone of Cancun, as well as expanding to other places such as Chiapas, Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende, to name a few.

Controversy continues among the taxi drivers and the issue of their leadership with a confrontation on the mainland concerning an alleged reassignment of a route. The taxi drivers are also unhappy about the 119 plates that were issued under the administration of Gov. Borge, who is now imprisoned in Panama. The electoral assembly planned for Sept. 16 was cancelled due to personal circumstances of Miguel Chan Mena, who remains dedicated to the opposition as a leader, and may be rescheduled for Sept. 30. Multiple legal complaints have been filed against the taxi union leader, Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez, who did not receive legal recognition of his election from the Board of Arbitration and Conciliation.

A security operation will be carried out to ensure safety in Isla Mujeres during the national holidays for Mexican Independence, with special attention during the traditional civic parade on Saturday the 16th, according to the general director of Public Safety and Traffic, Jaime Ongay. He asked for cooperation from the citizens regarding the restrictions on Rueda Medina Avenue, which should last about 70 minutes during the parade on Saturday.
Security measures began with the Mayor's Informe governmental report on Thursday and will continue during the festivities on Friday for the traditional Grito celebration, and on Saturday morning during the parade to ensure the least amount of disruption as possible.
On the other hand, residents are recommending that precautions be taken against burglary, since thieves are known to take advantage of opportunities such as this. "We cannot expect everything to be done by the police, which in many cases are not reliable; we need to organize between neighbors to support each other and monitor our properties, "said Ms. Irma Matos Can.
Complaints about jewelry stores

Complaints online against several jewelry stores are being collected by other merchants to ask CANACO (Chamber of Commerce), PROFECO (Federal Prosecutor for Consumer Protection), and municipal authorities to take action to stop these bad practices, which reflect badly on the image of this vacation destination.
An example is given from January, 2015, on Trip Advisor, where "Abraham" said they were directed to a store by staff with the Albatross boat, who promised a 30% discount for members of the tour. His brother bought a bracelet for 6000 pesos that they later realized wasn't really silver and was normally sold for 600 pesos.
There is a complaint by "Polett" from May, 2015 against a jewelry store which has been sanctioned by PROFECO.
American "Rebecca D" complained online on Sept. 6, 2016, about a chain which has three stores on the island, alleging that she bought a $200 necklace, but her card was charged $2000 dollars. She noticed the overcharge before leaving Mexico and was able to return the necklace and receive reimbursement.
On August 3, 2017, American "Stephanie" wrote a long essay about her fourth trip to Mexico, alleging that scams happen in almost every store in this country, and complaining that the stone fell out of a silver ring she bought for $120 dollars on the same day she purchased it at the Don Agustin chain store on Rueda Medina. However, she recommends visiting these businesses to haggle prices.
"Lex59" from Las Vegas said he was deceived when he bought a 'piece of garbage', which was na elephant that appeared to have a jewel and zirconias, but the jewel fell out when it was handled. They repaired it, and gave a certificate of authenticity, but it was stolen when he was in the boat.
"Melissa T" from Iowa said she was taken to a shop by tour-guide Manny from the Albatros catamaran tour, who said the store, "has the best jewelry and prices, the cleanest bathrooms, and free shots of tequila." She said she chose a ring priced at $1200 dollars, which she bargained down to $300, and a pair of earrings priced at $300 which were bargained down to $80. Her credit card was charged $311 and $83. She was given a certificate of guarantee with her name, telephone number, address and email. They were allegedly "platinum black diamond surrounded by genuine white sapphires." Later she learned that they were not made of silver, and the the jewels weren't black diamonds.
"Lifeistoe" from Australia said she/he bought an item that was priced at 100 Mexican pesos, but her/his card was charged $250.
Names of some of the stores are given in the article, and quotes from the consumers calling them thieves and scammers.

Sanitary appearance at the Trash Transfer Facility
Luce saneada la estación de transferencia. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
After more than five years, the Trash Transfer Facility is nearly clean, after more than 2000 tons of garbage were removed in recent months, and only a small mound remained on Wednesday, according to Public Services.
There is a governmental commitment that the terrible image generated by this accumulation of trash will not be repeated, which has been an ongoing problem for two decades at this facility, after the previous landfill existed where the Isla 33 condominiums are now located.
This accomplishment was applauded by neighboring residents, who have had to tolerate the bad odors from the site, as well as by tourism businesses and boat crews who say the stench could be smelled all the way to the Bay. The trash was taken to the regional landfill in mainland Isla Mujeres.
The municipal government has said they intend to add infrastructure to the Trash Transfer Facility to separate out the plastics, cardboard, and metal, to reduce the amount of trash that is transported to the landfill. However no public resources from the three levels of government have been dedicated to this project, yet.
