CHETUMAL....Today Governor Roberto Borge Angulo announced the delivery of electronic tablets to 26,588 students in fifth grade...... and to teachers, directors, and supervisors in the entire state, for the school year 2015-2016. The Governor announced that on May 22, the agreement was signed with SEP (The Ministry of Public Education) to assist the students and teachers by providing electronic tablets. This program is being implemented with the help of the President, Enrique Pena Nieto, and the Secretary of Education, Emilio Chuayffet Chemor, as a result of the Educational Reform.
Quintana Roo is participating in the Program for Computer Literacy (PIAD) 2015 for the benefit of all fifth grade students in all the public schools: formal, indigenous, special, and CONAFE & migrants, as well as for the fifth grade teachers, directors, and supervisors. The electronic tablets contribute to the process of teaching and learning, improve the students ability to study, reduce digital and social gaps among families and communities, and the tablets are preloaded with materials to help with subjects of the curriculum and of academic interest.
The Governor recalled that this is part of the strategies of the Quintana Roo Plan 2011-2016 for his administration, to impart quality education for all of the students of the state, equally.
There will be training for the implementation of PIAD and technical support available at all of the schools. There will be monitoring and instillation of a Comite de Vigilania y Seguimiento del PIAD, and assistance by the military and the state police to assure the security of the electronic tablets during their transport and distribution, to guarantee their delivery to the student beneficiaries.

Robert Ibarra Navarro, head of the Artificial Reefs Department of the National Park of Isla Mujeres-Cancun, said the artificial reef project at Sac Bajo, has been a success. He said it has been a decade since the transplants were placed, after natural corals were damaged by Hurricanes "Ivan" and "Wilma". The site is a stretch of 200 meters, where 150 concrete structures were placed, imbedded with small pieces of coral. The corals have grown and the artificial reef is alive with fish and colors that the tourists like to see. It is not far from the corals of El Farito, at the southern part, near the island of La Carbonera.
The official said they plan to place more structures in this area, at a depth of less than five meters. They have considered installing more MUSA statues, of which there are currently 450, but those details are known by the Park Director, Jaime Gonzalez Cano.
This project was begun ten years ago, after a study by specialists concerning this area of polygon 1 of the Park determined it was a priority to establish a policy in response to the number of tourists visiting this Natural Protected Area (ANP) with the objective of conserving the natural reef formations in the long term by creating artificial reefs. About 300,000 tourists visit El Farito annually, but now there is an alternative place to snorkel.
In the first stage, they placed 70 concrete objects called "Reef Ball", 30 objects called "Layer Cake", and 10 called "Payao", to form artificial reefs and serve as shelter for fish, in accordance with a study conducted by SEMARNAT (Department of the Environment). He explained that these structures do not interrupt the natural processes of colonization and growth of organisms present in the water, and don't create negative effects on the physical and chemical characteristics of the sea.
In the entire polygon of the park, in 2000, there were 850,000 tourists who entered the park, according to CONANP (National Commission for Protected Natural Areas), and today that figure has doubled. Due to federal budget cuts, there is no money this year to expand the artificial reefs, so that will need to wait until 2016.
The park consists of three 'polygons', or large geometric areas. The Isla Mujeres area is Polygon 1 and extends off the western coast of the isle. There is a map of it in this document on page 18. LINK )

The winners of the VII Municipal Children's Ecological Drawing Contest have been announced and their drawings will be submitted to compete on a state level, said Carlos Barranco, director of the municipal Ecology department. The contest opened May 11 and closed May 28th, and the outcome of the state competition will be released on Friday, June 12th. The theme is "At play we are responsible consumers" “Juguemos a ser Consumidores Responsables”.
The official explained that the aim of the competition is to help children understand the importance of being responsible consumers and consuming consciously, and to adopt attitudes and skills that will prepare them to live in harmony with the environment in pursuit of a sustainable future.
There were two age categories (6-8 and 9-11), and the winners were Jesús Azael Pérez and Migdy Jacqueline Hernández Herrera. The 183 children who participated were students of the primary school "Enrique Estrella Oxte" in the Continental Zone. It is not known why the other four primary schools in the municipality did not participate.
In each category, the first place winners were given bicycles, second place won VIP certificates for two at Garrafon Park and a dolphin encounter, and third place winners were given VIP certificates for two at Garrafon Park.

The Navy will have a booth showing their diving equipment as well as their rescue program to combat pollution at sea, and a conference that is open to the public entitled "Mangroves".
The CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) will have a exhibition of various ways to produce electricity, aimed at grade school children.
The Human Rights Commission will have a booth and the state Director will inaugurate the fair, with the Mayor.
The labor union CROC is supplying volunteers and had donated ornamental plants, to be used for reforestation.
The DIF is participating and will be giving away discs showing how to conserve water.
Aguakan will have a booth, who often work with NGO's.
The Maritime Terminal is organizing a Drawing Contest titled "A Child's View of Caring for Nature" ( “la mirada de los niños en cuidado de la naturaleza”), and the ferry company will be responsible for the prizes.
The Veterinary Clinic of Isla Mujeres (La Clínica Veterinaria de Isla Mujeres AC) will have animals available for adoption and materials available about pet care.
The Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) will have a booth about the work they do as programs for reproduction and care for sea turtles.
The Municipal Ecology department are actively participating and will have a booth featuring the actions of their agency in favor of ecology.
The NGO Green Patrol/Paturlla Verde will present photographs from 15 years of educational work on the island.
June 7, Sunday Election Day (for Federal legislators) Restriction of sale of alcohol to go and in some local bars. Alcohol has been sold in tourist bar-restaurants during past elections.
