Initiating the paving work on Rueda Medina with an investment of ten million pesos, creating direct and indirect jobs. Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez kicked off the public works project which is expected to take approximately 75 days, depending on weather conditions.
The area being paved will consist of more than 13,000 square meters of pavement, with crosswalks, speed bumps, guardrails on the curve, storm grates, and paint. The section being paved is from the Mundaca Hacienda to the Naval housing area, and the company Aguakan will upgrade the water and sewer network.
With this project, this administration will have constructed 30,000 square meters of paving, in addition to paving in the neighborhoods of Rancho Viejo on the mainland. The resources for this project come from FOPEDEM the Fund for Municipal Development and Paving 2015, with the goal of providing improved infrastructure and development to improve the quality of life for islanders. The mayor commented that there will be inconvenience and annoyance, but there will benefits for the residents and for this tourism destination and its image.
The event was attended by students of the kindergarten "Isla Mujeres", students from the school Jean Piaget, residents from the neighborhood of La Gloria, and officials, including Fidel Villanueva Madrid and members of the City Council: Mirian Trejo León, Bartolomé Pech Matú, Adriana Trejo González, José Magaña Gualé, Víctor Osorio Magaña and Eva Fani Quijano.

New golf cart rental concession granted

Despite previous objections and threats from the taxi drivers union, a new golf cart concession was granted by the DCT (sic) Department of Communication and Transport. It will operate from the beach club "“El Pescador”, under the company name "Caribean Funday" with at least 20 vehicles which will be offered with the support of a tour guide. These units are already in service, although they lack license plates. This company has been in business for years, renting bikes and ATV's on the southern part of the island, but now it appears they are offering a new service of routes with golf carts. So far, there has not been any reaction from the taxi drivers.-

The recent storms caused heavy losses for the fishing cooperatives. The President of the Federation of Fishing Cooperatives in the state, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, said the fishermen suffered heavy losses after a week without work, due to bad weather. Yesterday the Port Authority lifted the restriction on navigation for boats under 40 feet, allowing the fishermen to go out to try their luck. He said these weather changes often cause improvements in the lobster season, which begins July 1st.

Wanting geotubes for North Beach

Southerly winds that affected the region in recent weeks have caused recovery of a large area of the western part of North Beach, which had eroded during
the winter, with the deterioration of the "geotubes". These five plastic tubes have deflated over the past three years, due to lack of maintenance.
In February, business manager Carlos Cervera. who has a concession in this area of the federal zone, hired a company with a plan to replace them, for consideration by the City. He said he is pleased that the sand has returned, but that when the winds change directions and come from the north, then the sand will go away, unfortunately. This area is adjoining the Posada del Mar beach and was being enjoyed by tourists on Thursday morning.
Not connected to the sea

The Aeropuerto Salina, which is the third lake of the island, has no connection to the sea since the tube was closed twenty years ago after hurricane "Roxana", according to residents who live nearby. After the passage of hurricane "Gilberto" in 1988, a channel was opened at colonia Electrista for a stretch of about 300 meters to connect via a concrete tube about 30 inches in diameter to the navigation channel of Makax lagoon. But this connection, which crosses south Prolongation Rueda Medina and the streets "Isla Blanca" and "Independencia", is blocked by a wall that was built later for the marina Puerto Isla Mujeres, without any response from officials about this irregularity. With hurricane "Roxana" in 2005, the municipal government finished closing off the tube, to construct a section of low walls by the mangroves, on the shore of the water, in an attempt to prevent water flowing onto Independencia street, where a large trench had opened up when the island was hit by hurricane Gilberto in 1988.
In separate interviews, residents who live nearby, Manuel Tun and Hidalgo Pinto Cohuo, agreed that this connection needs to be open to prevent massive flooding, like that which occurred with "Gilberto", when the houses in that area had water up to their roofs. They say the line should not have been closed off.
Manuel Tun said the mayor, Agapito Magana visited at the site of the closed tube three months ago, accompanied by Naval officer Iván Villanueva. Constataron. He asked the council to support the proposal to reopen the tube, to speak with the executive administrators of the marina where it is sealed off and to achieve the reopening of this connection to drain the salina lake when its levels rise.
For now, that is that job has been accomplished for the past four years, since CONAGUA (the National Water Commission) financed the connection with Salina Chica lake which has a pump to evacuate excess water. "But that pump has limitations," said Sra Alina Velez, another neighbor who is familiar with this issue. She said in the event of a strong hurricane, those pumps would not have adequate capacity, and therefore residents need to fight to regain that drainage tube.

The Navy will have a booth showing their diving equipment as well as their rescue program to combat pollution at sea, and a conference that is open to the public entitled "Mangroves".
The CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) will have a exhibition of various ways to produce electricity, aimed at grade school children.
The Human Rights Commission will have a booth and the state Director will inaugurate the fair, with the Mayor.
The labor union CROC is supplying volunteers and had donated ornamental plants, to be used for reforestation.
The DIF is participating and will be giving away discs showing how to conserve water.
Aguakan will have a booth, who often work with NGO's.
The Maritime Terminal is organizing a Drawing Contest titled "A Child's View of Caring for Nature" ( “la mirada de los niños en cuidado de la naturaleza”), and the ferry company will be responsible for the prizes.
The Veterinary Clinic of Isla Mujeres (La Clínica Veterinaria de Isla Mujeres AC) will have animals available for adoption and materials available about pet care.
The Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) will have a booth about the work they do as programs for reproduction and care for sea turtles.
The Municipal Ecology department are actively participating and will have a booth featuring the actions of their agency in favor of ecology.
The NGO Green Patrol/Paturlla Verde will present photographs from 15 years of educational work on the island.

June 13, Saturday 10am or 11am 1st Gran Cabalgata (Mounted Parade) on Rueda Medina, from downtown in front of the Ferry Terminal along Rueda Medina until the Unidad Deprotiva (colonia Salina Chica?), where they will go toward Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue, then to the intersection of Paseo de los Peces in colonia La Gloria and over to the coastal road, to the southern part of the isle, stopping at the paths (dirt roads) in that area. After the horses drink water, they will take the same route back north to the chapel La Guadalupe and then gather at the El Pescador ballbark.(in front of Cheraui) The procession is expected to take about three hours. There will be a special brigade to remove the feces, and there will be collaboration with the Traffic police and Civil Protection to ensure a safe event. There will be entertainment at the park until 7pm, including the band "Laguna Verde". A donation of 20 pesos will contribute to the fund for the construction of a seminary being built in Bonfil.
The procession will include riders from Tizimín, Kantunilkín, Valladolid, Cancún and Isla Mujeres. Rain is forecast for Saturday, which could cancel the event.
